View Full Version : World Series
I don't even watch baseball (I have been forced to watch college softball, as my wife's niece was a pitcher for UT), but because a Texas team was involved, I figured I'd give it a go.
That series was good stuff... 2 very competitive teams. Honestly, as a football fan, I will still prefer to watch my team (they don't kneel), but this was much better than most of the NFL this year.
Seems like World Series drought teams are winning.
if so, next year.....
Longest current World Series championship droughts
Seasons Team Last championship won
69 Cleveland Indians 1948
57 Texas Rangers Never (franchise began 1961)
49 Milwaukee Brewers Never (franchise began 1969)
49 San Diego Padres Never (franchise began 1969)
49 Washington Nationals Never (franchise began 1969)
I've always enjoyed baseball but never really considered myself a fan. I used to go to a couple of Rockies game each year. This year I went to opening day and probably six or seven home games and found myself watching way more games on TV than I usually do. My mom is a huge Asteos fan so I'm sure she's pretty happy right now. I'd love to see the Rockies and Astros in a World Series some day just to have something for my mom and I to bond over.
I agree 00Tec.. I started watching the series late, but it was fun. And the fact a Texas team won?
HAH!
I enjoyed the series quite a bit. Good stuff! Congrats to the Astros.
MLB is definitely following a different track than the NFL.
I enjoyed going to Angels games and watching Nolan Ryan pitch. I enjoyed going to Astros games and watching Nolan Ryan pitch. I enjoyed going to Rangers games and watching Nolan Ryan pitch/fight. [Coffee]

I can't believe it's been that long.
If I win a lotto, I would like to buy that 68 koosman/ryan card.

Since HS I’ve been convinced I could live to a ripe old age of 80 or 90 and go to my death having never seen them win a WS. I still believe this, but not being eliminated until game 161 on, by far the lowest payroll in the league, 1/3 of which was Braun, was a nice surprise this year. There are some drought teams winning, but they are big or bigger markets and they are spending. Boston, Chicago, SF - all spend big.
The Astros did it right and built from the draft, and they started in the bottom half of payroll, but Verlander is going to cost them and some of these young guys (Bregman, Correa, Springer) might be worse.
PS - Ryan kicking Ventura’s ass is one of my all time favorite MLB moment. Still relive that one annually on the anniversary with a fantasy camp buddy of mine who pitched for our team.
What about the SI cover back in 2014 that was printed that said the Houston Astros will be the 2017 World Series Champs.

We're a Rockies/Dodgers household, so it was a bummer for us, but great baseball either way, and no doubt the best two teams were in the series.
Was a great WS and we are so Happy for the Astros even though I am a partial Dodgers fan. I went to my first Dodgers game in 1972 and have loved the game ever since. We totally cheered for the Astros...because of how they built their team and we all really like Altuve. Went to 25-30 Rockies games a year when they played at Mile-High. $1 tickets, beers and hotdogs was pretty good for a 20 something working through College.
Blake (my oldest son) was born November 1, 2001. On October 30, I sat for the PE test then on October 31, I went Deer hunting and shot a nice buck. Got it butchered and in the freezer by luinch. Then I watched the first World Series that extended into November as Jeter hit the walk-off in the 10th. Laid down in bed for about 10 minutes before Becky, who had been vacuuming, came in and told me it was time to go to the hospital. It does not seem like yesterday, but certainly not 16 years ago. I guess it is fitting that he loves hunting and baseball so much.
Both sons play for their school (80 and 40 games this year). I know that baseball is not the "spectator" sport that Football is, but it is our favorite and regardless of if they are fortunate enough to play after HS, they have learned more about life, and team, and work ethic playing baseball than their schooling has taught.

Same here. Grew up watching Dodgers game.
My wife is sick and tired of me talking about Hershiser and Gibson during this year's WS.

Yeah my wife is from LA (area) and me having aunt, uncle and cousins out there years ago, I was going to Angel's and Dodgers games before the Rockies came to town.
My wife enjoys baseball as I do. I thought it was a great series. A real contest with plenty of tension and action. Excellent plays and lots of HRs. Who could ask for more. Well I guess more beer and hot dogs.

Dodgers actually had the highest payroll of any team this year, there are actually a few teams in the top 10 that were surprising to me. They spent over $100,000,000 more than Houston. I was glad to see Houston win at that.

Forbes usually does a pretty good job of it and I’m well aware of the Dodgers TV deal and resulting payroll, but my point was that Milwaukee doesn’t have a prayer.

What a prediction!

Yeah, that makes sense. Your post made me want to look it up, found a forbes article but they were all poo-poo about my ad blocker. The owners for the teams with less of a payroll make tons of money either way so I feel like they don't really care if their team wins it all. It sucks for the fans though.
