View Full Version : Anyone Hiring?....
Theoretical study in thought:
Anyone Hiring around that y'all've heard of? Lately, I've been thinking of a change of career. Been teaching for a decade or so and have seen a steady decline of responsibility, desire to learn, etc. Lately I've just been in bad moods every night trying to do my best for the kiddos. I think I have burn out. I have plenty of marketable skills... throw some stuff out there! Would love to have one of those jobs where you're done at 5 and can leave work at work. Construction? Whatcha got?
My place is hiring in many areas Parts driver, parts puller, front counter parts sales, mechanics of all levels experience, service writers assistant used truck sales manager,
We are looking for 1 full time person or 2 part time people in the Lafayette area. Company deals in used containers...things like 55 gallon drums and such. We need someone who can do deliveries and pick ups...general werehouse work...cleaning barrels and totes and such...some customer interaction/sales. Typical hours are 9ish to 5ish...an occasional Saturday. Pretty easy going bunch of people.
Bear I've hit the same crossroads since getting laid off and best suggestion I have is figure out what your passion is and then try to make it provide you income.

Passion was (is) teaching music and kids... parents and red-tape bureaucracies are really ruining that for me. Ha.
That really sucks BB, sad to hear. Any chance you have a security clearance?
I just recently transitioned into a career in GIS as a GIS Specialist. It's very interesting work involving Geography, computers, Science, engineering & all sorts of interesting subjects. It's a booking industry & Colorado is one of the hot spots in the nation for this sort of thing. Find a good company to align yourself with, learn the trade & you'll never be searching for work again. I got on with an employee-owned company thanks to a buddy & it's a great environment to work at (so far) & the total compensation package is fantastic. It was a good enough opportunity that I gave up a cush job in sales management with a senior role in the company, take-home company car, expense account & insanely flexible schedule. I'm low man on the totem pole who has mountains to learn & I couldn't be happier.

My company is always looking for truck drivers (local deliveries to construction sites) and warehouse folks.

I forgot to add the important portion of your criteria as it applies to my new gig: my new job is M-F 8:00-5:00 if I want it to be. Gone are the days where boss man walks into my office at 11:00am & says "We have to be in (Pueblo, Scottsbluff, etc.) so let's go!" and all of my other plans for the day/night are screwed up. Even though I was able to take entire mornings or afternoons off with my other job it was rare I could plan for it & actually utilize that time for something I wanted/needed to do since it was largely last minute. Now, I can actually count down the time to 5:00 & know that I'm done 100% at that time. Like mentally I can check out too which is huge for me. The new job has flex hours too so if I want to come in an hour early or work through lunch & leave an hour or two early... No problem. Hell, I can work 12hrs on a Tuesday & a half day on Friday. You get the picture.
Look for it man. Your perfect career is out there somewhere just waiting for you. Don't be afraid to go find it!
What kind of job are you looking for? No client interaction? Sales? Service? Office or in the field work?

My cousin was a teacher and had burn out. He went to teach in community college and found the obvious issues with teaching in public schools were gone and there was just a class of students wanting to learn.
Funny I have always wanted to teach and am on serious burn out with my own profession (pharmacy). Daily I am being put into impossible situations for service while corporate ties my hands with the amount of help I can have. They keep signing contracts with ever decreasing rates of return and gross profit but they take it out on my staff (or lack thereof). About 3-4 more years in this for me then I will need to get out the stress is unbearable. No more evenings or every other weekend shifts either. Can't wait.

Well, I haven't quit yet, I'm just really getting frustrated and disillusioned. I know I'm making a small difference to someone, somewhere, just tired... No, I do not have a security clearance. I was never able to join the .mil due to health after the car wreck my junior yr of high school. After that it was all teaching, so never needed one.

That actually sounds kind of interesting... I've always romanticized about working with GPS and satellites and stuff.
What kind of job are you looking for? No client interaction? Sales? Service? Office or in the field work?
I don't know... All I've ever done is manual labor and teaching. I don't think I'd be majorally opposed to anything. Well, not true, I do not really have any interest in retail sales type stuff. Just looking around.

Funny you mention that. I've been seriously considering going back to school to get my PhD/DMA so I can teach College level (the kids that want to be there).... I've been keeping my eyes on openings but here in the Springs, there's not much and I don't think my wife is to the point of wanting to move as her family and very successful business is here.
I'm hiring two guys in my cabinet shop.

My sister teaches in Cheyenne Wyoming and she loves it, says it is a lot better than teaching on the Front Range. Pay is a lot better too.
ETA: Just saw you last post, looks like moving is out of the question.
Any charter/magnet schools nearby? Most of the parents there will be driving their their kids to scuceed and not put up with any kid games? Most of the teachers will be pulling their weight too so you dont get duds.
Are there GIS jobs in the Springs? My wife has a Geology degree and was looking for a while but couldn't find anything. Ironically she decided to become a teacher.
If you're any good with computers, go get a certification in Security+ or CISSP and you'll have recruiters after you pretty regularly.
ISC^2 mafia requires 5 years cumulative, full time, paid experience in 2 domains; one year is waiverable w/ a Bachelors. One can take and pass it with no experience, but they won't award the cert until you meet requirements. They'll only let someone without necessary experience claim Associate of ISC^2. It a real racket.
In the Springs, Sec+ would be the way to go to break into IT, especially with little to no experience. Sec+ in combo w/ Secret = at least a Service Desk position which would pay better than private sector low-mid analyst/engineer for the area.

How hard or not do you want to work in your next job? What (not necessary to put it out here in a public forum) physical condition you feel you're in?
How far you willing to travel, shift work, be trained etc? Are you expecting benefits from day one or realize there's a 30+ day wait till you receive them if any. What are your expectations for a new career? Once you consider those questions , then look at jobs/ careers that will get you there.
AND............... what age bracket you fall in, once one hits the late 40's it may be hard to break in to a new career.

Pueblo Chemical Depot is almost always hiring. Search for jobs in pueblo at www.battelle.org (for lab oriented jobs) www.aecom.com (for plant operations jobs) or bechtel.com (plant engineering)
The schedule sucks. it's a dupont shift schedule. BUT you get 2, 3 day weekends a month AND 1 whole week off per month. air monitoring jobs in the lab (through battelle) start off at around $25/hr for around $65k
Here's a breakdown of the schedule:
Week 1 Nights MTWT
Week 2 Days MTW Nights FSS
Week 3 Days TFSS
Week 4 Off
Air monitoring is constantly hiring due to turnover (mostly people who can't handle the schedule) must have a clean background.
I'm hiring two guys in my cabinet shop.
This industry (incl millwork) has so much potential in CO and nationwide.
I would be extremely interested in this job if I can physically work (and located near north Denver area). I know the business/market (top 15 millwork to customer cabinet companies in CO) and the general partners. Not to mention chemical coating companies to solid surface/eng stone/granite.
I actually almost bought a 15k+ sqft company near Mead 6 years ago (no, not the one in Erie which was on sale 8 yrs ago), but the term was to keep the owner on my payroll for 24month.
Bear,
I'm in the same spot.. I'm over my current job and plan to leave.. while I would like to line something up before hand, I don't think it's going to happen as I'll never get to make an interview.. I can't even schedule a dental appointment and keep it. I think once I get back from my couple days off for Turkey, I'm turning in my 2 week notice.. just want to run it passed a few old wise people first.
I have no idea what I want to do. Just is what it is.. Financially I'm ok.. I'd like to find something that allows me to get back into school and make a living, just not sure what. I have a few ideas, and I've started looking, but something totally different wouldn't be that bad either.
My place is hiring in many areas Parts driver, parts puller, front counter parts sales, mechanics of all levels experience, service writers assistant used truck sales manager,
Where is your place? I'm kind of limited to the Springs. I don't have the licenses anymore but I used to certified on 10 speeds, big rigs, and cats (all varieties, plus speed loaders, etc). It's been a while, but I could pick it back up me thinks.
We are looking for 1 full time person or 2 part time people in the Lafayette area. Company deals in used containers...things like 55 gallon drums and such. Ugh, limited to the Springs. Wonder if there are any companies like that in the Springs...
My company is always looking for truck drivers (local deliveries to construction sites) and warehouse folks.
Where is your company? I think you're in Littleton, doubt I could make that work financially.
I forgot to add the important portion of your criteria as it applies to my new gig: my new job is M-F 8:00-5:00 if I want it to be. I thought my perfect career was teaching, but after a decade or so... I'm not sure sure anymore. I am looking around.
I'm hiring two guys in my cabinet shop.
In woodland park? That may be do-able... could I send you a PM and ask some questions? IE. what knowledge base would I need, skills, tools, times, pay, etc?
Any charter/magnet schools nearby? Most of the parents there will be driving their their kids to succeed and not put up with any kid games? Most of the teachers will be pulling their weight too so you dont get duds.
That's funny you ask. I went from a poor Title 1 public school to an extremely well funded Charter school.... I would take the Title 1 school back....
My sister teaches in Cheyenne Wyoming and she loves it, says it is a lot better than teaching on the Front Range. Pay is a lot better too.
ETA: Just saw you last post, looks like moving is out of the question.
Yeah, Sorry. If I could get the wife to move, I'd probably head back to Texas anyways.
If you're any good with computers, go get a certification in Security+ or CISSP and you'll have recruiters after you pretty regularly.
Good at computers? I can write email/papers, play a few games, write music, database, and can name the parts of a computer!!! Does that count?! HA! I'm interested in tech, but by no means an expert in it. What does one need to do to get certifications?

AND............... what age bracket you fall in, once one hits the late 40's it may be hard to break in to a new career.
How hard do I want to work? As hard as needed to get the job done.
What physical condition do I feel like I'm in? I have my problems (and excuses) due to a serious car wreck, but if a job needs to be done. I'll get it done. I'm stronger than I look. My mental toughness is what I work on. However, I know I won't be climbing any 14'ers or running a marathon anytime soon.
How far you willing to travel? That's the kicker... Married to a succesful wife who's business, family, and kids are here. Will not relocate. I can commute and all that jazz but it would have to financially make sense in order to do that... currently some of the jobs would not meet that criteria. I DID commute 2 hours one way for 6 years though at my last job. It was worth it.
Benefits are nice, but not a deal breaker.
My expectations for a new career? ... to just be content in doing a job well done. Currently teaching, I feel battered from all sides and am not happy when I get home.
Age bracket - not quite 40 yet, still have a few years. I don't know if I'm going through a mid-life crisis early or if I'm just not supposed to live past 65?... HA!

I have no background check issues. I've always been the good kid, ha. This is intriguing me, need to find more info on the shift stuff. I am a musician and sometimes do have gigs no nights... are they generally ok with having to get coverage for a night or two out of the month?

Sorry, It’s not a “get someone to cover for you” sort of job. The shift is the shift. You do get PTO, but I’d recommend saving it for illness/ injury because there’s no sick time.

If you try and follow a dream, or make a hobby a job, all you'll end up doing is limiting your available options and ruining your hobby. You should be as open minded as possible and set high income goals for yourself. A thread like this is a great place to start because it draws on people outside of your immediate circle of friends for employment ideas, and that's what you need. Don't worry so much about what you think you want to do, worry about what you think you can do, and avoid things that you already know you don't want to do.
Have a little talk with yourself and think back to every single job you've ever had, no matter how mundane or low paying it was, and decided what you liked and disliked about each position. Figure out what your favorite job has been, and why. Not because you're going to find that job again, but you want to have an idea of which attributes of that job meshed best with your personality. Even at this point, be careful to not narrow the field of things you're looking for, just be aware of the attributes so you'll recognize them when looking.
I think I'd reach out to as many people as you can, and find out what they do for a living, and how they arrived at their position. Also, look for people who aren't always complaining about things. I've found that many people are dissatisfied with stuff in their life, but they're unwilling to risk a change, so they go onto the internet and bitch about everything they can, or have a general bad attitude in life. Avoid advice from these people because what ever they are doing clearly isn't working.
Final thought is that it's okay to pursue money. You can strive to make as much money as possible and still be a good person at the same time. You don't have to sell your soul, push other people down to help you to the top, or even work a million hours to make a lot of money, you just need to discover those positions that pay well and fit your needs. Good luck.

Solid.
I should add that "a lot" of money, is completely relative. If you're like me and have never had a job that is considered well paying, then "a lot" for you may be less than others would consider. Don't worry about that, because your goal is to satisfy yourself, and not to impress others. The job for you is out there, you just need to keep every option open to find it.
Here is a Tim Ferriss interview of Mike Rowe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2omFKcCmX-o
It's long (2 hours and 20 minutes), so I suggest you put it on in the background while you do something else. Tim Ferriss interviews successful people and deconstructs what makes them successful. This isn't like a self help thing, it's just two guys talking about their experiences and there is some enlightening stuff in here. Check it out. Fast forward to 3 minutes to skip all ads, interview starts at 5:30ish. Tim Ferriss is the creator of The Four Hour Work Week and I believe he's all about making as much money, with as little time working as possible, and Mike Rowe has experienced over 300 jobs.
Skip to 1:03 for the part where Mike Rowe addresses following your passion for a job.

Surprised to see that. With as much money as that industry makes you would think they would seek out a higher caliber employee to keep things running smoothly what with all the government regulations & oversight. Then again, gun shops probably have just as many or more & often times their pay rates are also low.

Know a few people in the business.
The shop workers get paid very low wages and a lot of employers categorize them as contract workers, so no benefits, social security matches, etc.
It is a real shame.

Often times people running dispensaries are geniuses at growing weed, but not at running businesses. On the other hand, there aren't a lot of positions in that industry that are much beyond entry level. "Bud Tenders" are really just helping people decide which strain to try and ringing them up. The actual growers spend all day trimming plants and taking care of them. While it's important to not ruin the crop, it's about the same as learning to work at a garden center or something. Security guards are just security guards.
However, there are new positions for guys to deliver weed from grow facilities directly to dispensaries. I believe that the position requires an active concealed carry permit as well. That and delivering packages for Amazon strike me as jobs with potential for easy work that isn't done behind a desk.

Yeah, they don't attract the best people. I know a couple of Vets that work for a security firm that handles dispensary security, and they routinely talk about how the dispensaries only hire the bottom, and only pay the bottom.
As per one of them, 3 dispensaries that he has worked with have all had problems with the employee's stealing weed and smoking while on the job, and he said it isn't rare.
