We had Calvin, our 2 1/2 year old Rottie, DNA tested. He's not papered/registered but looks and acts just like my last 3 Rotts; a big happy goofy clown. He's the first one we've had with a tail, and I think that throws some people off. We get asked pretty often "what's he mixed with?". So we did a DNA test. We've done DNA dogs tests before, but from cheaper companies. This company (Embark) was more expensive, but had a ton more info. Not only did we learn his breed percentage, we learned the haplogroup and haplotype of each of his parents and some of his common lineage back through the European colonial times. They tested for over 160 genetic diseases and conditions, and his traits based on the alleles of each chromosome. It was pretty crazy reading the report that lists all the genetic markers that specifically describe him - from his wavy hair, his "improper coat", snout shape, shorter stature, they even predicted his current weight exactly. Somehow we got lucky, Calvin has no worrisome genetic predisposition for scary diseases. This was a fun experiment!

I’ll confess I have wanted to do the ancestry or 23andme (human) tests on my dog just to see what they send back. But not for $100.
100% freaking awesome pup!

Cool. I'll have to visit, I've not met this furry critter.
My GF and I were talking about this. She adopted a 6month old pup a couple months ago and we have no idea what he is. Lab mix something https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171121/f9aecbb604acc9569b1c754690a2a335.jpeg

You got to meet him when he was about 10 weeks old, right? Still a happy goober.

Think of a younger, slightly smaller Harry (with a tail). Come by any time!
I have a mutt (heeler/whippet/?). I'm happy and he is happy about being a mutt.
Kewl that you can trace the lineage.
I'd be kind skeart to trace my DNA. All I know is I'm a northern Europium mutt.

Don't get me wrong - I'd love him just as much whether he was pure or not, we were just curious to see what else might be in there. And after our last boy died suddenly and unexpectedly, we also wanted to look into his risk of health problems.
I'd be curious to check my own DNA, but my tinfoil is too tight to voluntarily put my DNA into some database.
I’ve done my DNA it’s pretty cool. I mean I came back mostly Western European but I had some others in there as well that threw me off

If you were adopted and have no progeny, getting a DNA test is only pertinent to yourself. I'm pretty sure nobody else cares.

Fentonite- May I ask how much it cost? I'm considering doing this for my pup Cairo, we picked him up a few months back from a rescue and were told he's Rottweiler/GSD mix. I'd love to get more info on it and what company you used and price. PM me if you're not comfortable telling details here.[Beer]

I used Embark
https://embarkvet.com/?preselector=owner
They have a sale right now for $179. Definitely more expensive than some of the other companies, but much more comprehensive than the others I've used. The health info provided could potentially save multiples of that, and maybe even your dog's life. And it's fun.
Yep Rememeber the floppy paws, puppy breath and bigass head! I love rottys and calvin is just a big lovable goofball but Fenttonite takes even the most scary dogs and tames them [Beer]

I'd be interested to see his results. Good looking pup
GSD Rottweiler mix is a good description for him. Good looking pup.

Thank you... he is quite handsome, and it was almost fate when we met him as he came straight up to me and wouldn't pay attention to much else.

That's what we were thinking. He looks very similar to a GSD/Rott mix a friend of mine had growing up. Also really mellow for a 5mo old puppy.

I just got an email from Embark, the dog DNA company I used. They offer a referral program, where anyone I refer gets $30 off, and they send me a $10 Amazon gift card. If anybody wants to use the referral, the link is below, and I'll give you the gift card as well.

My dog Duke was a chill dog even for being abused (Rescue) only difference between the two is duke had one ear up like a shep and one down and floppy. Ronin that's a cute pup for sure!

That is one cute pup! Looks to have GSD as the dominant breed gene in her. The only down side is the needle teeth. They'll start to fall out at about the 4 1/2 month mark. As for the ears, we were told that during the tooth growing process, the cartilage doesn't build up in the ears as much until that is done, then is when they should start standing up if they will.
The breeder said the Father was a GSD, the Mother a Rottweiller. Most of the previous litters grew to be 100 lbs +

Comparing the size of her paw to the size of her head, I bet she'll be a beast!
