Anybody have any experience with these? Recommendations for or against? Looking at the 40x model for full imagery of varmint cong exploding at 300+ yds...https://www.burrisoptics.com/tactical-scopes/long-range-scopeshttps://www.burrisoptics.com/scopes/xtr-ii-riflescopes-series/xtr-ii-riflescope-8-40x50mmI have 3 burris scopes, they're all ok. I have an old fullfield signature that is a 32x, works real well, but was was wondering if these are any better....

4x20 or 5x25. I tried the 40 and didn't like the overall picture /focus... The 4x20 gets it done out to 500 easy.
I have the 3-15 and the 5-25. Anytime someone asks for a recommendation for a $1000ish scope, I recommend the XTR line. I think they are the best value out there for the money.
I didn't realize they offered a 40x until I read your post, though.

glass compared to sightron or vortex on the 25x kazoo? Newracer? tim?
also tracking? I'm a tracker...
The glass is what you'd expect at that price point. I have some high end stuff, and it's not that, but it's better than decent. Where the line excels is in features and tracking. I've had both of mine on my tracking jig, and both tested perfectly. Glass quality, to me, is nice to have but far from essential. I'd shoot any match with an XTR. I'd prefer my NF ATACR or my Schmidt, but the only practical difference is some tiny extra ability to see environmental factors. For example, wind in the weeds at the target, or other subtle clues about what the wind is doing like dust or pollen in the air.
Mostly, I buy high end stuff when I can because I enjoy the view through superb optics. It doesn't make me shoot any better, though.

They track and are durable. Not a lot of scopes in that price range will do that. I wouldn't get a 40x that scope/reticle was designed for F-class. The glass cant support that type of magnification and the SCR reticle is better. Stick with a 3-15 / 4-20 / 5-25. PM me if you interested in a 5-25. I might have a line one.
I have a couple XTR IIs (4-20 and a 5-25) and am very impressed.
They have held up great.
For sure I would buy another.
Dittos. I have one of each. On the 5-25, over 20x is where you can really see the glass difference between the XTRII and higher end optics. For big targets, not an issue. For seeing the tiny details, it matters. I have the 4-20 on my precision rifles and I am very happy with them. Box tests (tracking) is excellent and they are durable as well. Better glass than PSTs and Sightrons, not quite as good as the Vortex HD on up.

ok, soooo....primary use case is a 6.5creedmoor in an ar10 with a 24" tube set up for varmint cong...i have the 50% off discount, so if u all are saying its worth it, then ill pull the trigger, but if i saved up my sheckles.....well i could get a nightforce before the baby varmint cong come out...

For that Setup, 4-20 XTRii will serve you very well. The 8-40 field of view is so narrow, it's only really good for exactly what it's designed for. F-Class and Benchrest.
I've owned 2 of the 5-25's and 3 of the 4-20's and I like the 4-20 over the 5-25 as the overall package is a bit smaller, and the 5-25 seems to get fairly dark up past 20X so if it's not at it's best anyway, you might as well just get the smaller package at a cheaper price point.
Another vote for the 4-20 or 5-25. I have a few of them and echo what has been said. They are great for the money and track very well. Its a really solid optic. I would shoot any match with them. Plus Sky and crew at Burris are very generous in their support of local/national matches.

4x20 as others have already stated. Internals are over engineered and stout as hell. The 8-40 is 1/8 MOA clicks designed for one purpose as XC700116 stated. For the money you will not get a better scope. You can get 2 XTR II's for the price of a high end scope.
Good luck with your decision
I'm a bifocal wearing searching for a exit pupil type of shooter.
Would I be sacrificing anything getting the 4-20 instead of the 5-25? Would only be shooting at Pueblo and Fort Carson matches
Less weight and bulk would suit me fine too.

I do not think so. I prefer the 4-20 over the 5-25 for match shooting.
