View Full Version : Diagnose me?
Who wants to play doctor?
So, yesterday evening out of the blue and for no apparent reason I got a sharp, stinging pain in one of my finger joints. The pain happens when I move that joint and feels almost like a bee or wasp is stinging me. In fact, when it first happened I thought maybe something had stung me. No signs of any sort of bite or sting though but every time I move it (especially when making a fist) I get that sharp, stinging pain. No apparent swelling either. I don't remember doing anything that might have caused me an injury. I've don even things in the past lifting awkward, heavy objects or pushing or pulling on wrenches in odd spots and have strained or sprained fingers before but this seems different. It's really odd and annoying.
Anyone have any guesses?
I'm going to give it a week or two but if it doesn't go away I might have someone's look at it.

Could be just a little arthritis starting to act up. Lay off using that hand for extra curriculalr activities a little bit and see if it eases up.
Does it affect your grip strength? Like ehen it acts up you just loose strength when gripping something? If so arthritis would be my guess.
Welcome to the classification of "old man" my friend
How old are you and what kind of work have you done in the past? Did you injure your hands often as in bending wrenches?
You may have Gout. It is a build up of uric acid in your body and usually goes to the toes but can go to any extremity or any joint. It makes crystals in the joint and they tear and irritate. It can happen in any joint.
Go to the DR. and have some labs done. There is medicine for gout that works well
I hope you get better. Mike
While it's not the most affected joint, gout maybe? I know when I would get attacks, big toe, it would come on quick and like bee stings. Haven't had any major attacks for 5 or 6 years, but when I did, the worst pain I have ever had.

I wear a BioFlow magnet when I get arthritic pain. It is a bracelet with a magnet. I got mine on Ebay. "BioFlow Sport" on Ebay search.
The magnetic field concentrates the virus that causes arthritis. Your immune system can then destroy the virus. The analogy would be "shooting ducks in a barrel".

Can they now tell from lab work? When I developed what they felt was gout, my daughter-in-law who worked for a urologist, told me the only way they could definitively determine gout was to stick a needle into the joint to look for uric crystals. Being it was as painful as gout itself they prescribed medication based on the symptoms.

You work with any metal recently? Those damned little slivers can be chameleons whether you feel them or not. Hope it's not your trigger finger.... ;)
Masturbate with the other hand?
I ain't no goddamn DR. but I think labs will show elevated uric acid and ultrasounds or X-rays can show buildups.
OP needs to go to the Dr. to find out. Mike
[MOD: Easy there big fella. Keep the tone friendly]
Thanks everyone. I'm only 47 (which I feel is still pretty young). I had heard arthritis was painful but I wouldn't have thought it would be isolated to one particular joint and I don't have any noticeable swelling or inflammation so I was kind of ruling that out. I know nothing about gout and always thought it was strictly something that affected the toes.
Thanks for all of the advice.
If I die you guys foxtrot can have my stuff.

Arthritis can and does effect people of all ages, from whole body to individual digits. Work with hands, you're a candidate. If you consume alcohol that can also effect joints.
At 47 i'd go with onset of menopause.

Wait a minute....some estrogen could cure this whole thing Kazoo?
I don't think you're gonna die this week, Ray. Can I still have your stuff?
You can have mine if I die first.

Labs won't show gout specifically. But as MCD said, elevated uric acid is what they look for. I think anything over 5 is higher than normal.
I had a pretty severe flareup several years ago in the typical place...the big toe. And let me tell you gents, it is painful. My last labs in Sep showed high uric acid (9.7) so I started taking Allopurinol. It works to lower uric acid, not to cure the disease. I'm also trying to drink as much water as I can throughout the day to assist in removing the uric acid from the body.
Foods high in purines contribute to high uric acid levels. And unfortunately, most of the stuff I like to eat is on the list. And beer (most other alcohol, too). Here's a good list:
https://www.healthbeckon.com/purine-rich-foods-to-avoid/
Other symptoms you might notice are the joint feels very hot, swelling, inflammation, tenderness in the joint, redness. If it's a minor flareup you may not notice any other symptoms, though. And, it may not be gout at all. But...
If it is gout, you damn sure want to get that under control sooner rather than later. Google "gout tophi" if you want to see why. I took one look at those pics and decided that was definitely something I don't want to see happen to me.
jslo I do have experience, in a knee. Of all places for it to come on?
That is why I posted what I did. It is very painful. Mike
It’s not Lupus.
It’s never Lupus.

If it isn't arthritis, it is probably trauma to the finger joint. The cure is to rest it. If you think it might be a fracture, go get an X-ray of your hand. If you don't you could suffer later in life of reduced ability to use that hand. A fracture will need a splint to heal properly.
My diagnosis is that you're getting older. Go ahead, prove me wrong. [Coffee]

Maybe gout. Could be shingles. I had it start in my left index finger in the joint, I let it go and it just got worse, spread up the left arm and by the time I got to see a doctor all he could do was give me pain killers. It damaged the nerves in my finger and the pain was really, really bad, like bad burns. I would not wish shingles on my worst enemy.
Best you get to a doctor as soon as you can, why take chances?

You need to do more stretching. Think of it as yoga for your fingers. You can do it in the morning on your way to work.

I had the exact same symptoms in a finger joint. It was arthritis. You might try taking some "Move Free" or equal for a couple of weeks. Worked for me.

I must have timed out or something.
I got my reprimand from the Mods about "I ain't no Dr." and that seemed to put some panties in a wad.
I try to be proper in English grammar and spelling. I am not the best but I try.
What I posted was 'I ain't no Dr." and it was meant to be taken in humor but that didn't seem to happen. I tried to relate my experience so others would know. It must have been taken out of context.
If what I posted offended you I am sorry, that was not my intent.
I thought this was a site related to shooting and not a choir boy thing.
If what I posted offended you I am sorry but if that is all it takes to get you going you would not want to meet me in person as what comes out of my mouth is I tell it as I see it. and that would cause you to go into apoplexy
Maybe I am not good enough for this site. Mods, feel free to take me off and I will not bother you again. Regards, Mike

Well, Mike, for what it's worth I appreciated your advice. Not sure who you ruffled or why but besides being a "gun forum" this place is full of knowledgeable people from all walks of life who are a,ways willing to lend advice on just about anything. Hope you stick around and enjoy your stay and play nice with the rest of the kids.
Thanks. [Awesom]
And, Foxtrot.... just noticed your edit of my post (#13) earlier. Pretty sly. [Awesom]

It's just that you're a new guy and people haven't felt out your personality. You'll learn the ropes soon enough. Despite what the membership will tell you, this forum is basically the exact same as every other discussion forum out there. You've not done anything wrong. Don't show weakness like this in the future or you'll be set upon like a fawn running from a pack of wolves. If you're ever in doubt about how something you're posting will be taken, just take the easy way out and put a smiley of some sort. ;)
I am not taking my ball home, however, I do not take spankings too well.
My skin is thick and I do not play well with others with thin skin. I tend to play rough like the "Big Kids" on the playground.
It may well be that my decision to try this forum was a mistake on my part.
I thought this was a shooting forum and a place to put humor in and put out what you know or have experienced during your life.
I am not trying to be a hardass, but have taken all of the petty spankings from my Dad that I can take and take them from no others.
I don't feel that I will fit in here so will bother you no longer. Regards, Mike

You talked a hard game about how thick your skin is, while saying that you weren't going to take your ball and go home, all while being offended at nothing and doing exactly what you said you weren't. You would have fit in well here. Safe travels.

Irving, you see it your way and I see it my way. My skin is very thick, I just don't pay games, too old for that. Either way, I am gone and will bother you no more.
Jeez, you guys took longer than this to chase off that offended lesbian way back when...
MCD-48, I don't mean to be a dick and I did appreciate your medical advice but you made a post saying you wouldn't bother us any more. Then you made another post saying you wouldn't bother us any more. Then you made another post saying you weren't going to bother us any more. Since you've also claimed at least twice that you are thick skinned I hope your feelings don't get hurt when I say it's starting to get kind of annoying.
Interesting to read of the regulars on this forum who also have gout. Uloric has been working better for me than Allopurinol ever did, but it's way more expensive. I would have attacks in my instep and ankle and could barely walk. I've had broken bones that hurt less. What an insidious disease.
In the hands, my bet would be arthritis. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if you have an old injury to the joint that's coming back to haunt you.

It sucks, but it beats the alternative.
I have a friend that has a flare-up of gout once in a while, after he eats specific things. I know one of the foods that exacerbates gout is asparagus.
Ray, my arthritis sometimes feel sharp and stabby, but other times it's a dull, heated pressure. Does the pain always feel like a stinging sensation? Does it come and go? Do pain relievers or heat help to alleviate it?
Maybe it's from all the "like" post's [Coffee]
