My wife has a Samsung phone and wants a smart watch. Does anyone have one or make a recommendation?
Looking at the FitBit Surge or the Samsung Gear Fit as my main two options
I’m no help. I have an iPhone so when I decided to get a smart watch I went with the Apple Watch because I knew it would be compatible. Maybe Samsung offers something you could check into?

I probably was at one point, that ship has sailed for the meantime.
Here is the link to a thread I posted almost a year ago, with info on the newest Gear S3 smart watch, and some of my experience/opinions of said watch:

To sum it up, I loved many of the features the watch had, but it was seriously lacking in fitness/heart rate tracking, and so I dumped it in favor of a dedicated fitness tracker. There were several of us Gear watch users that were begging for software updates for the heart rate portion of the watch, so there is a chance Samsung listened, and the watch is up to par now, but who knows. If fitness tracking is not high on your priority list of functions, the watch would likely serve you well. Currently I'm looking at the Garmin Fenix 5, but will likely wait for the price to come down a bit, because $500 is just a bit out of my price range.

So I know that my wife likes the fitbit stuff for heart rate and distance tracking while running and walking, but she also wants something connected to her phone for text messaging.
After reading the reviews on a few items in depth it seems that people love or hate the Fitbit Surge. I try to look through enough reviews to find out what the main issue was and for many it seemed like the watch band as well as customer service were lacking.

Did you ever upgrade? I am looking into something to track fitness and also use for hiking, hunting GPS functions. I am also looking at the Fenix models.

Hmmm...my wife wants one, too. Until I started searching I didn't realize how many "smart watches" are out there! It's bewildering.
I need something that will work with an iPhone 6, and something that will allow her to either read texts or at the very least be alerted that she has one.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkI did get a new smart watch for my birthday last week, I went with the Huawei watch 2 sport, and a week later I'm loving it. I'm off the next couple days, if I get a chance, I'll do a quick review on my first week impressions, and what I think of Android Wear VS Samsung's OS.
A couple of the watch faces I've been using.

That's pretty sweet.
I ended up going with a Fitbit smart watch that integrates with my wife's phone. Honestly I'm not into this type of stuff, but I am super happy that I got it for her. She never answers her phone or texts for hours. Her entire family is that way. I would get so irritated that I am spending a crap load on phone service for her to take pictures with it. Now she answers instantaneously. It has worked out better than planned.
I have had the Samsung Gear s and the S2 and they are totally different from each other. They are cheap at Pawn Shops. Most smart watches are. I deleted the health stuff from my phone and watch, because I got tired of it monitoring me and telling me to be active when I was driving. Very distracting. However, being able to read texts on my watch without digging out my phone was helpful. Being a truck driver looking at my watch isn't as bad as texting if a cop saw me.

Yet equally unacceptable, keep your damn eyes on the road, my children's lives depend on it....
Its a quick look just to see what it says. I text back later.
Your kids shouldn't be playing on the highways.

bumping this
Ok, about 18 months ago I bought a fitbit Charge 2, after you guys talked about it. I liked the HR, steps, sleep etc. The problem is, I break bands a lot. Then I broke the screen, it caved in. I noticed my wife's fitbit has a cracked screen as well. (although not caved in)
I could just buy another one, but I really want something more durable. I really need the watch to have the ability to have a second hand. Otherwise I have to wear my g-shock also (for counting patient pulse, respirations, etc)
I need durable, I dont want to spend a ton. I see the samsungfrontier is now $279 with $100 gift card at Best Buy. I like that you can have a normal looking screen and the watch looks pretty classic. Has it gotten better since hurley reviewed it? (as far as HR and fitness) The fact that it takes normal bands appeals to me.
I dont want to have to buy crappy bands that break all the time and I dont want the screen to crack. I catch watches on things all the time, I bang them on things, I am rough on them. I assume I need to buy the warranty for $59?
I would also be happy finding another fitness tracker that isnt HUGE or fragile (since I dont really need to surf the internet or call mars with my watch)
I know a guy who makes leather & kydex holsters. maybe he could fabricate up something more durable that what's offered ;)
I'm old fashioned I went with the Nokia Steel for 70.00 on ebay
