Police Officer Ken Copeland was shot and killed while he and other officers attempted to serve a warrant on a man wanted for a crime of violence.

The officers were ambushed at the man's home on Cottonwood Parkway, near Capistrano Drive, and Officer Copeland was struck multiple times. He was transported in a patrol car to Central Texas Medical Center where he succumbed to his wounds.

The subject who shot him surrendered following a brief standoff with members of the regional SWAT team.

Officer Copeland had served with the San Marcos Police Department for 19 years. He was working an overtime shift on the day he was slain. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Serving a warrant always carries a high potential of danger. I did a ride along with Golden PD earlier this year and we were called to go pickup a guy on a felony warrant. I didn't think it would become a pseudo-standoff, but long story short, we stood outside this guys house with guns drawn trying to talk him out for about 25min. That was only the second time in my career I've drawn my weapon.

RIP Officer Copeland. 19 years on the job... So sad for his family and the agency. Looks like they lost a valued veteran officer. :(
