Rampart could re-open?

I hate to see a range close but Rampart was a disaster. I'm surprised only one person ever got killed there. I'm fortunate now to live out in the sticks where I can shoot on my own property, but when I lived in the Springs I used to go to Rampart occasionally. I was disgusted with the trash, beer bottles, shot up signs and benches, and general lack of respect for the property. It was free to use and close by though..

I know for every slob who abused that range there were 100 decent guys who observed proper safety rules and packed out their trash, but the slobs shure did give the rest of us a bad name. Maybe if they re-open it with a range officer and charge a reasonable fee, maybe $5-$10 for two hours of range time, it might be a pretty nice, convenient range again..

What do you guys think?

I would like to see it reopen, I've been there several times myself, but I do agree that there needs to be some changes. Perhaps the manager mentioned in the article would be a good start, maybe a membership with quarterly clean up days. I dunno, I hope they don't close it for good.

I really miss those nice solid benches for fine tuning loads. Supervised and pay for use is fine by me!

I'd be willing to pay as well, but it should be reopened regardless to keep the lowlifes from just pulling off the road farther up to shoot.

Amen to that! My wife and I took our CCW class there a while back. She liked it because its indoors, climate controled, and clean. It is a nice range, but DAMN! They sure are proud of it...

I think a no membership required, pay for use, supervised range could be a real money making endeavor for someone. Especially an outdoor facility with at least a 100 yd. berm. Come to think of it, there used to be a range like that north of the Denver metro area back in the 90's when I lived up there. I think it cost $10 bucks back then. It was crowded as a Wal-Mart on welfare day, but at least a guy didn't have to worry about getting shot by some fool being careless.

Dude, there's a range off of I-25 exit 108. I think there's a waiting list, but not a bad one.

I find it ironic that before Rampart was closed, more than a few cried foul at the thought of paying for time on a range or paying for a membership to a range. Now it's closed, and everyone is willing to pay to get it back, AND willing to have someone out there as a Range Officer.

Yep, Whistling Pines can be viewed as on the expensive side. Bill runs a top notch range and it's the best indoor range in CO.

Ben Lomand Gun Club is down Hwy 24 from CO Springs. Pueblo West Sportsman's Assn is north of Pueblo and south of CO Springs off of I-25.

Absolutely! I totally agree. The Ben Lomond club out by Ramah is a great range. I used to shoot smallbore silhouette back when they had their range just west of Monument. The Pueblo west club is awesome too. Also, River's edge (I think) has a sporting clays facility which also has rifle berms out to 200 yds. Supposedly, a 1000 yd berm is also in the works. I need to check them out, especially since they are only about five miles from me. I also really like Issak Walton's range off of hwy 24, just east of the Springs. Its really popular with trap shooters, but does have some rifle and pistol berms.

As for the issue of pay for use, I personally never had an issue with it. This is why I only occasionally went to Rampart. It seems like whenever something is public it belongs to everybody, but somehow its always someone else's responsibility to take care of it...

As for Whistling Pines, it is indeed the nicest indoor facility I've ever had the pleasure of shooting on. For those who don't mind the pricetag, it is a great choice. I'm just cheap I guesshttp://www.co-ar15.com/forums/images/icons/icon12.gif...
