View Full Version : Muzzle Break Question

Kind of new to ARs, but I'm looking to get a muzzle break for my AR with a 16 inch barrel for a fair price. If there's one product thats way above the rest, but pricey I'll definitely consider it. Open to all suggestions. Just a bit overwhelmed by all the options when I look online. Mainly looking for something simple, quality, looks fine, and will get the job done better than an A2.

Thank you.

I just happened to see an article about this subject yesterday so it was still in my browser history http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2016/10/jeremy-s/ar-15-muzzle-brake-shootout-3/

I have the dynamic resistance brake, which subjectively to me, is the best brake I have shot. But others rated higher.... At least the article defined their process and tried to be quantitative.

Very helpful post. Thank you. Also apologies for the spelling errors in title and first post (muzzle break instead of brake) lol

Having now linked two spiffy graphs, I feel compelled to say, "There is more to a muzzle brake than just recoil reduction"

The are terrific LOUDENERS (tm) The blast you notice is increased, not only to you, but those next to you. If you want to make "friends" shoot one with a loud brake indoors at a crowed range.

I might be in the minority but since the 5.56/223 really doesn't have much in the way of recoil or muzzle rise I usually pick my muzzle devices based of of what looks good to me.

Best brakes I've ever used, and relatively inexpensive:
https://muzzlebrakesandmore.com/

When it comes to muzzle brakes, less recoil = more noise, that's just the way it is.
I personally don't care about the person next to me and whether or not they appreciate my brake - they can move.

I was thinking more like a naked lady silhouette like on a tractor trailer mud flap.

JP Recoil Eliminator is the best, so good it is illegal in most competition. JP has a new brake coming out, should work good, like all JP stuff.

I also have the Dynamic Resistance brake and it works great.

I used one of these and it’s very flat recoiling. Also one of the most inexpensive brakes made, so sometimes more money doesn’t equal more performance. DPMS Miculek Compensator.

If you need a brake on a 5.56/223 rifle then you should let your husband shoot it.

I like my brake, primarily because it irritates the absolute shit out of my buddy.

I just told him I am getting one of these for my next build.

If you're even thinking about running suppressed down the road, give that some consideration as well...

Say what?

Is that a 3 gun thing?

I LOVE my recoil eliminator. Looks like a brake on a howitzer.

JP Recoil Eliminator is the best, so good it is illegal in most competition..

Not just the JP but all comps and muzzle breaks are banned in NRA High Power and NRA High Power Sporting matches. It because of the firing line points are 6' wide, not because one is better than another. NRA HP Rule 3.16.1 Is there an organization that banned it because they felt it was better?

IMHO a lot of time and ammo has been spent researching comps and although they do fulfill a purpose increasing accuracy is usually not one of those benefits. When group sizes shrink using a comp it is usually because the shooter is more relaxed not that the gun is shooting better.

Is that a 3 gun thing? Yeah, they created a "size" rule that it did not fit. The new JP 3-port stays within the size limit (barely). But your right it looks awesome, unless it is next to your face [Kick2]

Illegal for Tactical and Limited Divisions.

In Open/Unlimited division, anything goes.

I have the SJC Titan (the winner of the truthaboutguns test) and it works great. It’s like shooting a .22 short but as other have mentioned, no one enjoys shooting next to me. It’s long, about 3”, so I had my barrel shortened and the brake permanently attached so my total barrel length is 16”.

For 5.56 I would just search ebay until I found something that had the look I wanted. It's not a punishing round, so maximum recoil reduction isn't going to buy you much more than a lesser brake. Diminishing returns.
