Anyone here into wood carving ? Looking for some guidance into knives for this purpose. Looking at Mora and Flexcut so far. Any help would be appreciated. Need to resurrect a pastime I enjoyed as a kid. Thanks.

[Sarcasm2]Well after reading all the responses[Sarcasm2] I decided to get the Flexcut starter set. Could have got the set locally from Rockler for $59 but found it at BladeHQ for $46. No wonder the internet is taking over sales !!!. Anyway looking forward to rejuvenating an old hobby !!

Not much good for you since you already bought something but Pfeil if money isn't an object and Narex is a good economical choice. Pfeil tools are Swiss made and Narex is Czech. I don't think you went wrong with flexcut according to what I've heard. I'm not into woodcarving per se but dabble in building reproduction muzzleloaders and since I'm a cheapskate I use Narex rasps, chisels, gouges, and drawknife. Very happy with them. Good steel and great prices. Undoubtedly there are better tools, but at that price point you would be hard pressed to find them.

I did look at the brands you mentioned and settled on Flexcut for availability and cost. Plus they have a wide choice of tools if I decide to continue with this.

In my defense, I would have responded to your original post but I only know two things about wood carving... jack and squat.

Oh, and I'm impressed you referred to it as "wood carving". Most guys your age would have called it "whittling".

That's okay Ray I have filed a sensitivity lawsuit on the internet just because !!! "Whittlin" (no g) is done with a dull jacknife and a piece of hard oak [ROFL2]

Run an experiment to see if you carve different ideas when listening to different types of music.

Nice mountain man by the way.

I was thinking Pink Floyd. One carving running into the next and then the next...

Good job!

Now that I'm not on my phone, I can see that the material is not Meerschaum.

Meerschaum is a material that pipes are made of that starts out white, but changes color over time.

http://www.meerschaummarket.com/ ETA: Look how much these pipes go for! They are awesome though. I bet you could sell pipes on Etsy or something and make a nice little side hustle for yourself. :)

Here is a guy with a pretty patriotic one!

There are a bunch of pipe kits available, of course not just in meerschaum. That'd probably be lots of fun.

Yeah I know what the pipe material is. I had no idea what your first reply meant haha. Not into pipes or kits right now. Mine are from just plain blocks of basswood. I'm already seeing the need for some more carving tools for detailing. That's why the wood spirit has no actual eyes yet.

Somewhere in a box in the garage I have a carving of a duck that is probably about half done.

I am the king of unfinished projects.

The box probably only has three sides and a bottom.

By definition, I don’t think that would qualify as a box.
