View Full Version : AR15 5.56 barrel suggestions
I have a build going here and am currently looking at barrels. Was wondering if anyone had suggestions other than what I have located.
What I want:
Under $200
5.56mm (223 wylde is out- I shoot steel case regularly)
16" threaded
Mid length gas
1:8 or 1:9 twist (it is more likely to see lighter weight projectiles than anything heavier than m855)
Under 2lb
M4 feed ramps
I dont want M4 profile (aesthetic preference).
Rifle will be plinker primarily.
What I have found:
Sionics. Lightweight, chrome lined
http://sionicsweaponsystems.com/store2015/16/24-5-chrome-lined-w-low-profile-gas-block.html
Green Mountain Barrels, heavier, cheaper, not chrome lined
http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/gm-m8-16-mid-length-gas-system-5-56-mm/
Surplus arms: stainless, but edge of weight
http://www.surplusammo.com/products/saa-16-5-56-nato-lightweight-mid-1-8-match-416r-stainless-steel-black-oxide-ar-15-barrel.html
Faxon: not really digging the profile

I used to put decent barrels on most of mine but in recent years I’ve come to see barrels as more of a consumable item. Instead of spending $200+ on a big name, chrome lined barrel I’ve been using nitrided barrels from several manufacturers that set me back less than $100. Maybe I’ve just been lucky but pretty much all of the ones I’ve used have head spaced correctly, functioned properly, and met my expectations for accuracy.

A lot of these barrels can out shoot me anyways, so I have opted for the sub par ones and have had great luck.
Without checking each one of your boxes, I have heard good things from these guys - http://ballisticadvantage.com/ar-parts/ar-barrels

Too bad, i have a 100 rd take off sitting here with a gas block for under $200. Nice shooter but not what the spouse liked for one of her AR's .

Ballistic advantage, or bear creek arsenal should have what you want. Take a look at their close out/specials and you can find some great deals!

Any other time, I would probably jump on that one, but with this build, it will be my first new gun in a while and I want it to be all brand new parts from the ground up.

100 rds is new ;) almost. Well one would think that by some ads we've seen. LIKE NEW only 1000 rounds from me, unknown round count from previous owner

This barrel almost matching what you are looking for but the twist 1:7 . it's a nice quality barrel, I've bought one as a spare so didn't build / shoot with it yet.

They have a light weight version of that barrel at Aim Surplus for $80.

$235, but it includes a Pinned low pro gas block and has pretty much the ideal AR15 barrel profile.

^Yup. Why I recommend the OP look at BA barrels. The BA Hanson barrels are excellent! Can often find them at discount prices too!

Made by same company but different steel, mfr process and profile barrels :
416R Stainless Steel COLD HAMMER FORGED vs 4150 CrMoV Steel

Wow, I can’t spellzed.

I'm not certain that gas block will fit under my handguard, as it is very tight.
The reason I wanted something slower than 1:7 is that my standard handload for my bolt rifle is a 40gr at 3715fps. I think that may cause that little projectile to come apart if I feed it some.

Twist rates aside, I can say that from my experience, the pinned blocks that come with the BA Hanson barrels are very small and fit perfectly under even very skinny handguards...

What handguard are you using? That’s a fast little pill! You might want to look at 1-12” barrels?

Matrix Arms Victor. Says 1.3" interior diameter, but the shoulder at the top appears to be the issue.
I have a 1:12 on my bolt gun, but on this one I just want the ability to fire that round if it is what's in the bag. Minute of car door is fine with it. As long as M193 is accurate. It will never see 77gr SMK or anything, so the fast twist is on the wrong end of the spectrum for me.

Ballistic Advantage makes some decent barrels.
Also KAK.

They sell gas blocks and etc for decent prices as well. I got a couple of their value line 300 barrels and am very impressed. I would imagine their 5.56 offerings are much the same.

I would be looking at a 1-8” twist then.

A basic question - How do you pronounce 223 Wylde? "wild" or " will-D" ?
I pronounce it wild and I’m never wrong. Just ask my wife.
So... will-D it is. [emoji23]

A basic question - How do you pronounce 223 Wylde? "wild" or " will-D" ?
I always said Wild, but a buddy says Willed. It's probably pronounced "why load?"
http://www.dictionary.com/misspelling?term=wylde&s=t
I don't know if the "e" on the end changes the pronunciation, but I don't believe so.
Actually, I forgot about this website. www.forvo.com
https://forvo.com/search/wylde/
Probably need to find out how the originator pronounced his name. Much like the oft mis-pronounced Garand rifle.
ETA: I've always pronounced it "wild", simply due to familiarity of the literary name Oscar Wylde, but I could be mistaken. I know I got the above name wrong for many years.
Just you guys wait until I develop the .224gif
