I'll be moving to Denver in June. I've lived on the Western Slope and in Northern Colorado but never in the city. For obvious reasons I don't want to live in Denver Proper. However, I will be attending Metro and working in politics so proximity to the downtown area is paramount. So where are some good neighborhoods to live in just outside of the city?

Cherry Creek! [LOL]
I'd say south of Denver in close proximity to I-25 so you can catch the light rail to the campus. There is also good student housing at I-25 and Lincoln, but the train ride is longer.

check out arvada and wheatridge. These are close yet I think they were nice to live in.
Man, there's so many, you'll just about have to check 'em out yourself to find what you like. I work in downtown Denver, but live in Parker. I've driven through lots of what look like nice areas near downtown, but I don't "know" anything about them. What some might consider good neighborhoods might not suit your tastes.
I'd suggest that you come for a short visit to explore around, if possible, use a rental car and motel if you have to. Find out where you're gonna spend most of your time (school, work, etc.), and start looking in that area.
You just need easy access to a high way and Denver proper will be 15 minutes away from more places than you can visit.
Aurora is a bit more affordable, and southern aurora has a lightrail station. at Parker Road and I-225...
Saudi Aurora,, home of Uhh welll....

Look near Englewood Lightrail. You can walk to the station. Within one mile you could find a house or apartment with reasonable rent. There is an indoor pistol range in the are (the Shootist).

go west to the city of Lakewood, 5 miles from downtown, great areas, great homes, lightrail access soon... easy access to all major highways.
But really, all are pretty good choices everyone has listed...

It's real simple. DON'T!!!

If you're planning on ever buying NFA, and don't want to go the trust/partnership/LLC/corporation route, you'll be well advised to pick your county or city carefully. I hear Arapaho is a no-go. I've had good experiences in Jeffco. You are wise to avoid the PRD or PRB as the libtards will just drive you crazy.
Is this TDY or permanent?

This is for the foreseeable future. I'm looking at JeffCo for the most part. I'm fully aware of the crazies in Boulder and Denver so yeah, that's why I'm looking outside of the city.
