I think the media has helped to embolden these assholes. RIP Deputy.

I've clicked the link several times, and it looks like it started from a stolen car?

I think the media has helped to embolden these assholes. RIP Deputy.

I doubt it. Criminals have been doing whatever they're doing in direct opposition of the police since always, and killing people when things go South has been an option since always. I can't imagine any media coverage is reminding anyone that killing people is an option.

My thoughts and prayers go out to our officer and deputies.

May the fallen deputy rest peacefully.

Douglas County Deputy Jeff Pelle said it best: "Enough".

The shooting has prompted many in the community to call for an end to officer-involved shootings, including Boulder County Sheriff’s deputy Jeff Pelle, who was shot and seriously injured in an ambush on New Year’s Eve.

Gee...why didn't the police think of that. WTF does that even mean?

I can't imagine how you get to the point where shooting a police officer seems like a good idea.

Deputy who was killed was an 11 year veteran of the EPCSD:

In a short news conference Monday evening, Sheriff Bill Elder identified the slain deputy as 34-year-old Deputy MicahFlick.

Elder spoke of his "profound sadness" at losing the young deputy, who leaves behind a wife and 7-year-old twins.

Monday was Flick's 11-year anniversary with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

This sucks for this man and his family.

Unfortunately this is what happens when you have to handle thugs with kids gloves. Can't call them criminals anymore because it's offensive, can't put them up for the death penalty anymore because our liberal chicken speck governor gives them a stay of execution and so we foot the bill for them the rest of their lives.

This country needs a drastic change, a jolt, a shock of sorts..but those types of conversations aren't allowed here, so I can't talk about that.

Dang, the SO's have taken some hits lately.

To the LEO's: Stay strong guys. We appreciate you and are praying for you.

PS - I've always admired the SO's in this state. That admiration was solidified when so many Sheriffs attempted to defend our 2nd during the lead up to, and since, the mag ban. They've always appeared to treat their job in the traditional sense of LE. To serve and protect. I suspect that them taking that mission so seriously has something to do with the recent losses. And for that, I am grateful. You guys do a great job.

That quote from CBS is IMO an offensive attempt to justify these shootings of officers by tying and equating them to "officer-involved" shootings.

When a large enough portion of the population doesn't follow the order of the society, there will never be enough police.

Prayers go out to these officers and their families.

Just got back from the hospital visiting a friend of the family who just had a baby boy today. The hospital was lined with police cars, officers all around and new crews on every entry point.

The first thought I had was "oh no, not again". Obviously for my friends in blue my concern for their safety has grown every year, now it's every day. The criminals seem to be more emboldened to use deadly force as they don't give a shit about anyone or anything. As I've said to my unarmed friends-if they're willing to fire on the cops who they know are armed, what do you think they'll do to Joe/Jane Sixpack?

Prayers to the friends/families of the officers involved. I'm getting sick of saying "another sad day".

Any word on the killer's background? Odd that someone who can pass two background checks decided to steal a car and shoot some cops. Same goes for the guy in Thornton, no news on how he passed his dual background checks and decided to kill someone.

The media jumped all over the nutcase in Highlands Ranch and how he got his guns, but nothing with these other two so far.

Stolen car, warrant, drugs, etc... POS doesn't need a reason. Some exist only to kill, steal, and destroy.

As I've said, I'm damned grateful we don't have to deal with these people in the streets and it's the reason we should stay armed.

Glad the criminal will be 6 foot under and not milking tax payers for the rest of his life.

The Douglas County guy was a crazy person where law enforcement had little ability in previous cases to do something or charge the person with serious crimes. He wasn't trying to get away he was barricaded to ambush and knew he would probably die (or maybe he was so crazy he didn't).

The last two were criminals doing criminal stuff. Weapons possession was probably already illegal in addition to the other crimes they were committing. The media can't do anything with that.

Ohhh, so they were criminals already living a criminal type life... Man, I wonder how they passed those two background checks to get their guns? The dems made me pay for an extra background check last time I purchased a gun, wonder why these guys were exempt?

I'm thinking we are talking about two different things. From what I understand the guy yesterday was a car thief (criminal behavior). The guy in Adams County has a lengthy criminal history as well. I don't remember the off the top of my head what they were attempting to contact him for immediately prior to the shooting other than a disturbance. It is my understanding that he is a felon and was illegally in possession of a weapon.

Because you have to pass two of them to buy a gun these days in Colorado. And you get to pay for the state one.

Guys, my point is simply that the media will not do a story on how these killers got their guns unless it came from some gunshow type thing. Our background checks are not working, as criminals clearly obtain their weapons without getting a BGC done.

I am waiting for some legislator in Denver to try and push some gun control thing in light of these 3 sad situations. Yet the media will not point out that these killers don't follow any law that would be created. I am sure I am preaching to the choir here...

Suspect named and more details...

http://gazette.com/shot-deputies-and-officer-part-of-regional-crackdown-on-car-thieves/article/1620479

"They engaged a suspect of auto theft at the Murray Hill Apartments," Elder told county officials Tuesday morning. "A brief scuffle ensued, followed by a shootout with the suspect, who was killed on scene."

Abendschan, a detective, is a regional coordinator for the BATTLE group, which shares a $1.4 million federal grant to target "prolific" car thieves.

[snip]

Deputies and police went to the apartments just before 4 p.m. to arrest Manuel Zetina, 19, a suspected auto thief. Elder said the deputies wore civilian clothes with body armor vests that identified them as sheriff's officers.

Rather than stop Zetina in the stolen car, or follow him into the Murray Hill Apartments, officers decided to confront him in the parking lot, said Lt. Howard Black, police spokesman, in a news release.

The "brief scuffle" was followed by gunfire as Zetina drew a handgun and began firing. Frantic calls were heard over police radio channels at 3:55 p.m.

So they were working a detail to help get working folks' property back.

POS knows he's caught in the scuffle and decides to shoot his way out. Like that's ever worked with LE?

It's already illegal to murder someone. When legislators create laws, no matter how redundant or unnecessary, it's a photo-op with self-promotion for their next election. Enforcing existing laws doesn't give them any of that.
