I was driving my work truck through Wyoming the other day and I got to thinking.

Will futuristic weapons make firearms as we know them, obsolete and run them into extinction?

The musket is gone (mere collectors item and used mainly for reenactments). The original Henry repeating rifle has met the same fate, however modern versions still exist. Cannons are no longer used in combat. They gave way to howitzers, tanks and deck guns on destroyers and frigates.

What happens when handheld EMP gun technology becomes standard production? High speed chases could become a thing of the past as an emp gun can be fired at the vehicle to disable it safely.

Handheld rail guns?

Electro-paralytic technology? (where a blast of energy is fired to render a subject temporarily paralyzed so they can be detained w/out injury or death.)

I'm sure there's other forms in the works as well.

What does this type of thing mean for the 2nd Amendment? For citizen ownership and rights? What does it do for the future of rimfire/center fire rifles, handguns, and shotguns?

Weapons and warfare have always evolved. When the firearm as we know it is obsolete, what becomes of the fight for gun rights?

Pace of technological change is a funny thing. Bows and arrows are still around. The Chinese had muskets and cannons for a long time. Modern firearms as we know them will probably be around for a long time as well. They are a durable good, function mechanically, and the level of technological infrastructure to build, run, and maintain them is relatively low. Cannons are still around, and most of the things you describe them giving way to are actually just modernized versions. A five axis CNC machine or 3D printer of sufficient size may be able to build you damn near anything, but that doesn't mean hammers and saws have become extinct.

Also, I don't think EMP has quite the effect in real life as it appears in the movies. A lot of vehicles are simply rolling Faraday cages already.

The technology will evolve, just as it always has. The fundamental need for effective self-defense, however, won't.

No one will need EMP weapons when you can just access your cloud account and shut down whatever device, or yourself remotely.

They will erase guns from history. Only referencing them as how they were used by ignorant, racist white men. Before they, like the guns they clung to, died out.

The mid 19th to mid 20th century had wars after wars, weapons innovation was necessary, most of what we know were legacies from that time. There were no big conflicts since WW2, and why bother spending the resources to make new small arms when you can build nukes that destroy the enemy before they see it coming, small arms research had diminishing returns and have mostly stayed there.

Gotta love Hollywood... most of this kind of technology the problem is a small, dense power source. Pound for pound, it's hard to compete with smokeless powder for energy content.

My personal favorite from Science fiction is a MASER (Microwave Laser)... invisible beam, but anything that contains water instantly boils when the beam hits it... also causes nifty fireworks when it hits certain metal shapes- caution required to ensure it doesn't reflect back at you.

I think the most dangerous weapon in this episode is Rick's mouth. Or maybe his chutzpah. LOL! I love Rick & Morty.
