I’ve got a female student who is a avid mountain biker. She does a lot of biking in the Monument area where a bicyclist was murdered awhile ago (see link at end).

The only thing that comes to mind for on-body carry would be a horizontal or near horizontal small of the back holster. A fanny pack would work but it’d add a lot of time to the draw.

She’ll be carrying a Kimber Micro 9 (http://www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/micro-9).

Can the community suggest methods of carry and/or products?

Chest mount might work for her, may be less likely to work on a woman though. I just carry normally when I ride, but I'm also not usually in bike gear.

Do not do small of the back. Falling on it would likely cause spine damage.

Fanny pack of some type or a safe packer

Hill People chest pack mounted to a hydro bladder on the back. It would look totally natural, and keep it handy.
But I would worry more about plugging herself when she tumbles off the bike and the gun goes off. Probably small chance but a tumble at speed will produce odd loads.

I typically wear spandex shorts, with a lightweight cargo short of some sort on top, with a regular riggers type belt and owb holster, so in other words I carry the same way I do any other time. Hasn't really been an issue for me, but then again I don't do 60+ miles either, usually 15-20.

Facepalm. Good point. This is exactly the reason I'm asking!

Seems to me that a fanny pack, especially with a woman's waist, would ride in the small of the back as well...

Hill People Gear was the chest pack I was thinking of.

Something along the lines of a Sneaky Pete on rigger or instructor belt.

https://www.sneakypeteholsters.com/kimber-micro-cdp-9mm-sneaky-pete-holster-belt-clip/

Concealed is concealed, sometimes special activities/apparel require compromise.

Open carry to dissuade a confrontation in the 1st place.

Actually already talking to her about this. The positives, the negatives and let her make an informed decision.

This ^^ I have a couple of them that I use.. One for regular hiking, one for fly fishing. I can keep the stuff in them that I need for those activities and just move the gun back and forth.

The one I use:

Without PALs attachment points:

Here's a smaller footprint one without the PALs as well:

He's got the full size bag in this vid, the other bags above are a little smaller profile.

I don’t do this, but you could easily slip a micro 9 in the map pouch of a frame bag.

I’ve thought about that myself.

I do want to thank the folks who are including links. In many cases product names are vauge enough I can't figure out exactly what product is being referenced.

It's appreciated.

I use a Hill People Gear kit bag or a fanny pack with a Tactical Tailor Lunar attached.

I second this. I have used a Hill People Gear Subby bag for bicycle carry for years. They are a Colorado company and the bags are made in the USA, and are the perfect solution for this mode of carry, or any outdoors carry (say with a backpack using a hip belt)

If you’re talking about the same HPG Chest Bag I’m familiar with there are easy ways to incorporate a cheap Bladetech holster into it such that the trigger guard is completely covered until the user intends to withdraw the pistol. That and don’t carry guns that go off when you fall off a bike.

It was supposed to say WITH a safepacker. the fanny pack becomes your belt and the safe packer is like a big flap holster. Much like the sneaky pete.

I recommend a chest rig from Hill People Gear. I always have mine on with a G42 when going down Cherry Creek Trail.

It's a compromise but I'd probably go with a frame bag and a holster that's designed for a purse or back pack. It can be unzipped partially and the gun is ready to be drawn. It also attaches with velcro loops so it can be installed/removed without exposing the gun if you're in a public area.

Talked to a experienced MTB rider today who open carries strong side. I'd be tempted to rig a high retention holster on the front of the seat post with the butt carried forward, muzzle down. Would have to have a optional carry method when off the bike.

When I go biking, what I have been doing is to carry my gun just behind my hip. It kind of sticks out but you can tie a shirt around your waist over it or snap a small fanny pack over it and stick your ID in there. My kids tell me you can't see it. 🙂

+10 for Hill People Gear Kit Bags https://hillpeoplegear.com/Products/CategoryID/1

I'll add some thoughts:

FWIW, I have a 41" chest and felt that the "Original" sized are too large (wide) when riding motorcycles and bicycles, in the same way I don't like a large PC with large SAPI plates... I bought a "Heavy Recon" and a "Snubby Kit Bag - Original Pattern", and after a couple rides using each kept the Snubby. I've also used it with my bigger packs when backpacking, depending on what the shoulder straps are like on any pack or hydration carrier you run, it may/may not be better to run the included harness instead of affixing to pack shoulder straps. Add'l advantage to using the included harness is it's still on me when the pack comes off.

I'm able to easily carry my Glock 29/30 or LCR. Look here for more examples of what fits the "Snubby" sized bags: https://hillpeoplegear.com/Forum/forumid/22/threadid/2531/scope/posts

legal question, you can carry concealed or open on a bike, as it falls under the "vehicle" definition, therefore an extension of your house?

hill people products looks real good though either way you do it!

Irving
08-15-2018, 11:16
Vehicles are not legally an extension of your house per the law. You can still carry in a car without a permit, but not for any reasons having to do with your house. Just a minor correction.

Open carry does not deter crime. Strapping a holster to your bike is probably not a good idea in 99% of all situations/areas, again Hill People Gear, or Fanny Pack.

I carry strong side just behind the hip while riding MTB, even on longer rides. I typically wear a camelbak as well, and have had some spills. The camelbak does a lot to protect one's spine, especially with a water bladder. Never had any bruising related to the gun. Other scrapes / bruises from regular crashes, yes.

Roadies have jerseys with three back pockets to carry water bottles and clothing. The strong side pocket would probably carry a cut down water bottle with a small firearm and holster inside the bottle.

Dredging up this old thread from 6 years ago.

Wife and I have E-bikes and we like to ride the trails along the rivers through Pueblo. However, we were thinking that carrying a sidearm might be a good idea because, well, it is Pueblo...

Anything new in terms of concealed carry gear other than the fanny pack? Carry gun would likely be a Ruger SP-101 or S&W M&P 9. We don't wear bicycle shorts or any specific "bike gear" usually its just t-shirts and shorts.

Have a look at all the new bikepacking gear that?s being manufactured. Oveja Negra in Salida may have something that works.

I find a chest bag is the best. Won’t droop like a fanny pack. Hill people gear makes a good one but expensive but other places are making them too now as well.

I've come to the same conclusion as Scanker19. Works on the mtb with a small pack but might look a little more out of place in more urban environment.

5.11 chest pack is decent. I needed a chest pack for a different application. Ended up with the less tactical version with a mesh pouch on front. A bit busy inside but the interior pouch is designed for a holster and will keep a G17. There is a thinner version with external mole. Since there seem to be 5.11 stores everywhere I suggest trying one out.

What ever you decide on, please do some dry firing from concealed at home with it. Crossbreed offers some options to secure not only your gun, but allows easy access to it, if needed.

This

mounted to this, when secured inside a pack, or other off body carry method, is a fairly solid choice.

I have been riding with a Ruger LCP II. I prefer strong side front pocket in a self made Kydex holster. Next would be strong side back jersey pocket. Last would be handlebar bag with the zipper partially opened depending on the terrain. I have a thong attached to the magazine for security.

A top tube bag will hold my pistol but I keep repair tools there. A top tube bag might be a good spot for many riders.

My 10 MM pistol friend hasn't been riding with his pistol. My .22 LR has to pick up the slack.

I carry in the backpack I wear while biking. It?s in no way fast, and I have my pistol in a kydex holster so don?t have to worry about an ND if I crash
