View Full Version : MacVan Maps going out of business

Well, it looks like we've finally hit the end of the road and will be closing our doors at the end of March. We were the last map store in Colorado (when Boulder Map Gallery closed a few months ago).

So we'll be doing some sort of going-out-of-business sale (I'll post here when it happens) but if you're needing maps you should get them now while the getting is good.

We've currently got Globes on 25% off, but to be honest we'd be willing to take offers on those. Also we have most of the Colorado USGS 7.5 minute quad maps in stock and what we don't have in stock we can print while you wait.

Anyone has any questions feel free to PM me or just ask in this thread.

I've been the Creative Director for MacVan Maps for the last 14 years (well the 15th of next month it'll be 14 years ... my how I've wasted my life :p ) So if anyone needs a graphic designer with 25 years experience let me know (I'm looking in the springs and don't really want to commute to Denver).

Oh and I asked the mods about posting this and got the okee-dokee from them (since this is basically a commercial post).

This has been a long time coming, based on your posts over the years. Sorry to hear you're back in the job market again.

Sad to hear. I’m kind of a map geek.

Sucks to have to close a business that has been your life.

Sorry to hear the news. Everyone seems to have moved away from brick and mortar to online sales.

I wish you the best and hope you land on your feet. Who knows, maybe it'll be a positive transition in the grand scheme.

That is a drag. I've spent a lot of hours in that store fiddling with maps.

Me too. I've loved maps ever since I was old enough to read them.

Sorry to hear about this. Yes, with digital maps it seems to be the way of the world, but it's still sad to see.

A few years back I was going on an off road trip and stopped by the Denver Federal Center's map warehouse to get some maps - only to find that they closed the commercial map sales business some time around 2013. [Shake] They still have maps but they don't sell them, they are for government agencies/military etc. No public access. [Rant2]

BTW am I the only one here who hoards his collection of old maps, especially road maps? For some reason, I CANNOT throw away a map unless it's completely shredded or trashed.

I love looking at old road maps from the pre-interstate era. Very different world back then.

Do you guys have military style/UTM maps of the local area and/or GMU 50/500/501?

Sorry to hear that. I should wander over and look at your globes and Mercator projections.

Thanks for all the condolences ... we've seen this coming for the last year (although we had a couple of chances to come out on top that didn't pan out).

Forgot to mention that we're at Garden of the Gods at Forge (on the south side of the road behind Jimmy Johns)

we're open 8:30 - 5:30 M-F and 9-5 on Sat.

And if you ask for me, ask for Mike (because most of y'all can't pronounce Zundfolge :p )

The spouse and I are dropping a buddy off at Ft. Carson on Monday; as we'll be down there we'll try and swing in. What time do you close on Monday?

Our globe had a terrible accident last year; it's time to replace it.

If we ever get EMP'd we're all going to be 2LTs on the nav course.

The better half works near there, and after I informed her of the impending demise, she stated that she has been wanting to stop in for quite some time. You can expect a visit from her today, or early next week, I'm sure.

Funny how we take things for granted because the appear so readily available...

Global warming or a meteor?

Well, Guam was completely upside down in the water for starters.

I think that’s what Guam is like in real life so it’s all good.

I picked up a couple of maps from Mike 2 weeks ago. He had to print them (waterproof paper). They're good sized maps and the two of them took less than 10 minutes to get (once I selected which maps I wanted).

Get 'em while the gettin's good folks and know you're in great hands with Mike.

Stopped in on Monday and picked up a good number of maps. Thanks much, Mike! It was nice to meet you.

People should take advantage of the inventory while they still can! Go now, while the getting's good.

The cats have not yet destroyed the new globes. I take that as a good sign.

Came by about 1710 or so ... older guy was the only one in the shop. May stop by again as I realized I probably want a couple more of the large Rand McNally Signature World Maps for gifts.

Sorry, missed that ... We have the DIY Hunting maps for those GMUs (50 & 500 are on one map, 501 is on its own). They're 1:70,000 scale. I believe those maps are based on BLM data but they're in lat/long, not UTM. Most of those GMUs are on National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps 105 and 109 and those maps have both UTM and lat/long (and they're both 1:40,680 scale). The NatGeo maps are also on waterproof paper.

As for the local area, we're pretty picked over for Pikes Peak area maps.

We can print any of the USGS 7.5min (1:24,000) quad maps you'd need though.

What all do you have for UTM? I'm unfamiliar with civilian maps. Still have all my land nav kit, so I would prefer UTM.

Any idea where to secure such a thing?

Well anything from USGS is going to have both UTM and lat/long as is NatGeo. As far as hunting specific maps, most of them are made by old guys that still use lat/long.

Your best bet would be one of the custom Topo maps from MyTopo since they use USGS data (although its usually a little older since they're using the old rasterized data and not the new vector data, but the mountains don't move that much :p ) http://www.mytopo.com/products/hunt-area-state.cfm?state=CO

Do you have any "wall sized" or for lack of a better word over sized full current Denver and surrounding metro? Not a folded type.

Yes, we have a Denver metro area wall map. When I get back in the office I'll post size, coverage area and prices.

Dang it...and I'm sorry to see this happening.

I've been a map whore since I was a kid, and still have some maps that came out of Nat Geo before I was a teen. The "connected" world has destroyed about as much as it has "improved"...at the same time.

Ironical.

Am anxiously awaiting delivery of my order.

Since going to the store in person was not possible I placed an order on their web site. Order was processed and shipped in less than 48hrs.

Prices were good compared to other retailers, especially on larger laminated maps.

Minions are going to enjoy and learn much from the giant world map.

Jeebus ... today was insane ... we did about a months worth of business in a day (too bad it was all at half price :) ) So I didn't get away to give you coverage and prices. I swear I'll do it first thing in the morning.

Now whiskey is my friend :p

Ok, our Denver Wall Map is 58" wide by 65" high and is Regularly $129 (so $65.50 on sale) on paper and $185 laminated (so $92.50 on sale). We don't have any laminated in stock so I don't know how we're handling that one (its too large for us to laminate in house so we have to send it out). I don't think we'll be able to get any mounted or framed at this point.

Received my order yesterday afternoon. More than pleased. The large laminated world map is amazing. Even the folding maps are very durable.

Is there any way to buy two copies of the Spiral-bound Colorado Springs map book commonly used by the CSPD/EPSO? I am in dire need of them and I can pick up immediately if possible.

Thanks!

Nope. We done and dusted (drove by today and saw the landlord even took down or signs).

Sorry.

On the other hand, I'm finally enjoying some time off :)
