Dynamic shooting areas?

Haven't been on this forum for a while, but I figured I'd see what others have to say.

Flat ranges are great for working the basics, but sometimes, you want to practice some other skills. Shooting while moving, holster work, shooting from unconventional positions, multi target transition, etc.

Every range I've been to has varying restrictions, whether it's disallowing holster, requiring you to shoot at a specific distance from a specific spot, or even requiring you to wait X number of seconds between shots. It's understandable for liability and all, but working in LE and the military for several years, I'd like to get more practice than what the agency provides (aka not much) and work with like minded individuals who can play by adult rules.

Anyone know of any spots where one can do that kind of shooting, or am I pretty much out of luck? Within 90 minutes of Denver preferred, but you get what you get.

Competition shooting is what you're asking about, and you can do this at many ranges that host competitions, even when you are not otherwise allowed to shoot that way. What kind of gun, and what kind of shooting would you like to do? People from all different sports post here and can point you in the right direction.

I'd say your best/only bet is taking some pistol/carbine courses. I used to set up some different targets and practice "run n gun" and elevated heart rate shooting, in some of the forests near Denver, but most of those places are either closed to shooting, overran by the "homeless", or filled with irresponsible shooters. Good luck, shooting is not what it used to be in this area.

I've done some competition here and there, but the problem with it is I don't necessarily get to dictate the skills I want to work on, in the context of improving the skills I might need in a duty capacity. Some skills do translate, but a lot of times you also have to deal with gameisms - dropping a partial mag without retaining it, purposely skipping a shot to beat the timer, completely impractical setups only for gaming, etc. Not necessarily my style.

One day I might want to work on carbine with pistol transition, other times I want to focus on concealed carry, or even just run myself through the agency qualification course to diagnose any problems I might have developed if I'm out of practice.

You should be able to do what you want out at CRC. I'm sure there are others, but that's the only place I really go that is outdoors.

The IDPA matches that I shoot in usually have a "bonus" round after everyone is done with pistols. They let us run some of the courses with either shot gun or carbine. It's cheap and you get to meet similar minded people.

Puebl West Sportsman’s Association Range, Ben Lomond range in Ramah allow this kind of shooting.

+1 for Ben Lomond. If you are out there during the weekday on one of the first 10 berms, you most likely will have it all to yourself and can shoot at whatever distance you want (as long as it's safe and you ensure all rounds stay within you berm). It's a drive for some but well worth it to me.

CRC does not allow it in their website listed rules, but when they put that restriction in, they also allowed members to get cleared for dynamic movement practice. I am doing such a clearance session on March 3rd at Noon on the East berms. Will likely do another in in June sometime. Mostly common sense stuff that is also the general safety practices we use in the East Range Competition matches.

Unfortunately, a few of COAR15 members still ignore the rules, one got caught and was booted, two LEOs got caught and were close.
