View Full Version : Digital Censorship
(Please don't beat me up with nits on the word "Conservative")
We have been discussing how great it would be to have some freedom oriented "Conservative" peer-media/social media platforms to use to avoid the current and coming censorship. If you are unclear on how they operate, here is a good read about the recent revelations...
https://www.forbes.com/sites/kalevleetaru/2018/01/12/is-twitter-really-censoring-free-speech/#1d6ff14d65f5
Also note that prior to the admission of Twitter and FB political censorship both companies adamantly denied it. If you look at the TOS you will see, in plain language, that they reserve the right to do this at their sole discretion. This means the way they censor doesn't have to be "fair" or even consistent within their own policies or behavior. They can block a Conservative who posts pictures of an AR-15 for "violence" but they can refuse to block a Lib calling for the death of someone's family (e.g. Dana Loesch).
Undisclosed is how they suspend, block, and ban users who regularly post Conservative views sometimes without explanation and manipulate trends, stats/likes. Matthew Bracken has been banned from FB three times in the last six months! Yes, FB has Bracken under a microscope while ignoring Leftist calls to violence/organizing, child p0rn, and livestreaming of violent crime (FB has had a couple of violent sexual assaults livestreamed now).
If any of you follow Ann Barnhardt's blog, she has a post up today about how her site is blocked from OpenDNS...
https://www.barnhardt.biz/2018/02/27/zayve-gott-eine-kleine-liszte-im-on-eine-kleine-liszte/
Thanks for contacting us. This domain is part of the German Youth Protection domain list which is cultivated and maintained by the German government. You would need to contact the entity within the German Government who maintains the German Youth Protection domain list to have it reviewed/removed.
There is no 1A in Germany. But Germany has added Barnhardt to a list (ironic, eh?). This is the apparatus they have set up to suppress free speech. It is global. DNS blocking is an even higher level of censorship IMHO and no one can argue "their platform, their rules."
This is why I have half-heartedly joked that we should use anti-trust laws to break up some of the existing companies and even seize others for the "common interest." Specifically Twitter who certified in their SEC filing they were a "town square." They have a monopoly and have seized any means of competition.
Before the election of Trump many Libs would have been critical of this censorship but nothing is sacred in the war to stop Literally Hitler. You know those 13 Russian "bots?" Yes, they illegally influenced an election on FB but strategic and systematic censorship is okay as long as the Party benefits.
So while we fight the 2A fight, just know that this is a full court press and there is far more on the line than just bump stocks. If you wonder why so many GOPers are getting squishy on 2A, it's likely because they are paying attention to the socials that present an overwhelming plurality on gun control.
There shouldn't need to be isolated media for different political stances. That sounds like less than freedom.
The owner of the printing press decides what gets printed and how much you will pay to have it printed. Restrictions such as censorship and excessive price create competition.
Freedom and capitalism in the same conversation!?
[Censor]

In a marketplace of ideas, sure. That is what the socials claim to be. They are not.

Did you read the part about the DNS blocking?
Competition is locked out.
A better analogy... Every printer in town refuses your work because they oppose your views. You decide to open your own shop because you know there is a market for free speech. Cops block access to your shop. No customers can come in to deliver/receive orders. No paper/ink can be delivered.
Why of course you have free speech! Your publications just can't leave the shop.
(No one is taking your 2A rights, you just can't have an AR-15)
(No one is making Christianity illegal, you just can't believe any of that stuff at work)
Another example is Gab.ai...

It's becoming blatant in Google search results. Any search you do for "Kleck gun study", the first 30 results will be "Kleck gun study discredited"...

What happened last time Americans were prohibited from engaging in political speech and simultaneously disarmed?

To confront the normalcy bias, sure.
If anyone thinks this isn't discussion worthy in GD, shut it down. Talking about guns in a vacuum is no different from the car boards out there. Lots of fun but just a hobby.
My guns aren't just a hobby.
When we see the same people who want us disarmed moving on other rights it tells a story. Remarkably few are paying attention.

Yup, those nuns look like the face of hate to me! [LOL]
There's lots of back-story on why Libs hate churches that practice the Tridentine Mass. Ultimately, if 1A means anything churches have this right. Mountains more here than SPLC simply saying "we don't like this church" or "we don't like this teaching."
But hey, these nuns should just create their own online video service to compete with YT, right? I'm sure they could crank out lines of code with enough caffeine... Lazy nuns just want to play the victim card.

Who else remembers the time before Google? When a search engine no longer produces useful results, another search engine will replace it.

There was a guy on Tucker Carlson, ex Google employee as I recall, doing a startup using blockchain technologies for security and public domain code to build out a social media platform that can't be censored.

I guess that depends on what he means by "censored". If there's no moderation, it sounds like a digital highway to hell. Let's just say that the anonymity of the Internet doesn't seem to bring the best out of people.

I haven't been on a CB since I had a licensed base station in 5th grade. Sorry, I'm out of touch, so please share these best ideas from the smartest individuals.
Channel 19 is the comments section of the radio world.
Yeah, it's always been that way, but that's a good way to put it for those inexperienced with CBs. If you want to have a serious conversation, you go to another channel.

That's right. Most people have no clue and are unaware of the overall bigger picture. If the information didn't come from an MSM source it is automatically dismissed as a conspiracy theory by many.

I'm skeptical as this lawsuit is in California, but we'll see what happens.

My twitter acct was suspended last night without cause, reason or explanation right after I posted about Delta losing $50M in tax breaks. I didnt even get an email. Usually if you violate a rule, they show you the post in question and tell you are prevented from posting for so many hours or days. Pretty sure my acct was targeted for posting conservative content.

Have you thought about building your own Twitter to exercise your right to free speech?
How many lines of code can you write? It might take a few.

hah!
Serious note, I used to be able to write QBasic and make the internal speaker on the computer do really annoying things with pitch and loudness. [LOL]
aside from that, I know enough html to be proficient at getting a decent website up with images and aligned text. That's the extent of my coding.

Well, then you might not have free speech on interwebs.
I suck at most web stuff too. So I will be silenced and respect the property rights of Google, Twitter, etc... Or not.

That's works for now. And it works for us little people. But if you are a high profile person with a following it doesn't work and the net result is denial of free speech.

Remember, political censorship is justified because BadThink harms the community. But not Pedos.
The Pedo thing probably just slipped through. Probably user content/activity. And probably not at all cultural...
This is Facebookâs second brush with sexual content potentially including minors in the past few weeks, the company was previously forced to apologize for a recent user survey which asked if pedophiles should be allowed to request sexual images from children on the social media platform.
Conservative speech = bad
Pedos on platform = fine (or bad when they get caught)

One of the great ironies is how the Left has twisted the First Amendment. The entire purpose of the First Amendment was to protect political speech. Not "art". Not sexual innuendo. Not pornography. Political speech. However, the Left and their minions in the laws schools and legal journals have twisted it completely the other way where you have no right to political speech that might hurt their feelings but they have the right to demean your religion, thrust pornographic materials on your kids, etc.
Developments...
YouTube continuing its purge of gun vids. No, not "gun violence" but how-tos, demos, etc...
Reddit is banning some subs. Guntrader, gone. Brass swamp, gone.
Some folks saying the search engines are no longer returning some results/home pages visited. I haven't seen this yet but I don't search much.
Oh, and remember these are the same people who wanted "net neutrality" because they would never abuse such power over the webs.

Lot's folks having their hobby inconvenienced by tyranny (and yes, it is a stateless dictatorship that we are facing).
Bumping this up to post an interesting story I read elsewhere.
CROSSFIT, INC. SUSPENDS USE OF FACEBOOK AND ASSOCIATED PROPERTIES
https://www.crossfit.com/battles/crossfit-suspends-facebook-instagram
Yes, it's Crossfit. No, I don't CF or I would have told you all EVERY DAY.
Here is what I thought was interesting...
Recently, Facebook deleted without warning or explanation the Banting7DayMealPlan user group. The group has 1.65 million users who post testimonials and other information regarding the efficacy of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet.
You can read more about that plan here...
https://banting7daymealplans.com/
Side note: I fully endorse this diet and if you get into the testimonials you will find people turning back the clock on diabetes and all sorts of other issues. I was having inflammation in my hands and shoulders that is now gone. I continued my strength training routine the whole time.
But this diet group was not necessarily a commercial interest as you didn't have to buy anything, the info/recipes is openly on their website, and not officially associated with CF. Not to mention anyone can casually adopt HFLC (High Fat Low Carb) without too much work. Your grocery bill will increase but that is not a function of CF or Banting deriving profit from it.
Facebook shuts down this group with 1.6M members with no explanation.
CF elaborates...
Facebook is acting in the service of food and beverage industry interests by deleting the accounts of communities that have identified the corrupted nutritional science responsible for unchecked global chronic disease. In this, it follows the practices of Wikipedia and other private platforms that host public content but retain the ability to remove or silence?without the opportunity for real debate or appeal?information and perspectives outside a narrow scope of belief or thought. In this case, the approved perspective has resulted in the deaths of millions through preventable diseases. Facebook is thus complicit in the global chronic disease crisis.
This thread has been full of good debate about restriction of political speech but we are now seeing the socials start to restrict speech in ways that benefit the public-private partnership completely unrelated to politics. That partnership doesn't want people on a HFLC diet.
Thought this was a good example of how far the socials are going to serve the partnership.

What happened last time Americans were prohibited from engaging in political speech and simultaneously disarmed?
Back then, Americans were broadly educated and well-versed in the political issues of the day, familiar with the same light weaponry as the opposing military forces had, and had cojones. By some estimates, 98% of Americans were able to discuss the Federalist Papers and did so in taverns and public squares. Granted, I don't think that estimate included slaves but I think it did include women as well as men from every socio-economic category then present in the Colonies. Today's society and "education" elite won't even give kids the Schoolhouse Rock condensation of the Revolution and are aghast at the idea of teaching kids to shoot bolt action rifles with actual gunpowder (never mind a semi-automatic "assault weapon"). Stand up to the SJW propaganda and you're labeled a racist or Neanderthal (although I'm waiting for one of the SJW crowd to realize that vilification is species-ist).
Along with digital censorship, these companies (Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, etc.) are being entrusted with our digital identities. To access content today, you must identify yourself. This board requires a registration process, but that is to protect the board owner. When you register using credentials that are authenticated from sources like google, facebook, Microsoft, twitter, etc. with one click on their end, you can lose access, or be denied access to content, including content saved on your own device.
I'm a pretty heavy user of Microsoft products, both at work and at home, and I am thinking I just have to stop using their stuff and go to an open source option. Sometimes, it takes so long for me to open a Microsoft Office file and go through all the identity checks that are happening in the background, I just don't open it, and forego doing something that I wanted to do.
I know this sounds like bad computing practices, ignoring online safety, etc., but to me it's just scary and potentially nefarious that each and every document, file, etc. is tagged and will or will not open based on the identity provided by these master identity providers, especially when they can choose to censor, and otherwise control a users digital identity, at their own beck and whim.

I understand your concern, especially given the history and practices of the companies in question but identity verification is an absolute must in today's digital world. Federated identity verification is all the more important given recent conduct of the federal bureaucracy (not to mention some of the most abysmal information security practices in the nation). However, there is no reason you can't use a whole other company for identity verification and in fact there's a huge business opportunity (IMO) for a company that is truly concerned about personal privacy to offer these services. Duck Duck Go is doing quite well in the search engine category and would be doing even better if people would wake up to the sheer evil of Google. I wish there was a true Linux phone alternative to Android because I would dearly love to give up that gmail account and any ability for Google to monitor or data dive into my location, calendar, contacts, etc. It's almost enough for me to switch to iOS (not quite but almost).
