View Full Version : Jeep Keyless Entry Remote Inop

Got a possibly dumb question for anybody knowledgeable about such things. The keyless entry remote on for my Jeep (09 Grand Cherokee/WK), stopped working a few weeks ago. Worked just fine for over a year before that. It was missing the battery cover when I bought the Jeep, so it has an aftermarket casing, but the guts are OEM. Tried a fresh battery, no help. I have a second remote, so it's not that big a deal, but I do like having one as a backup just in case. Should I just say screw it and buy a new remote, or might there be a way to salvage this one?

Have all the buttons stopped working, or just one?
Did you flip the battery over just to make sure you didn't install upside down?

None of the buttons work, and the battery is right.

Home Depot carries some key fobs for vehicles- they may sell them cheaper than at a dealership.

Okay, I recently had an issue with my Dodge key fob, but it sounds different than your issue.

You can get 'em on eBay too. But I replaced the battery on my old Silverado's fob once, and that fucker didn't work for years. Then, one day, I discovered that you had to "reset" it by holding one of the buttons down for "x" # of seconds. Worked fine after that. Grrrr.

My experience with a lot of key fobs are that the buttons get worn out- there's little contact points on them that go. At work I have a drawer full of misfit keys and fobs that I swap parts around to make a good one. If you post up a pic of the fob I can poke through and see if I have any.

Is the battery in the right way?
When you open the remote is there a bunch of black gunk on the board pads where the buttons touch it? If so ouple of qtips and some runbing alcohol. Clean until black is gone and pads are shiny clean. Wipe the button rubber too.

Battery is ok, contacts are ok. I found a procedure to reset/reprogram the remote using my Google-fu, I'll try that after work and advise.

Locksmiths and some hardware stores have replacements the signals can be reprogrammed.

And good to go! The remote is still ok, it just needed resynced to the vehicle. Thanks for the input, all.

Sadly, all cars are going to the chip ignition. Thanks to the insurance industry. And no, they are not any more secure to a knowledgeable car thief.

Mine is doing the same thing. Did you find the resync method somewhere online?
