CHRISTOPHER RYAN MORTONPolice Officer Christopher Morton was shot and killed when he and two other officers responded to an unknown situation as the result of a 911 call at approximately 9:20 pm.

The call taker could hear screaming in the background on the call, but the caller did not otherwise communicate and hung up before officers arrived on scene. As the officers arrived at the home in the 300 Block of West Grand River Street a male subject opened fire on them with a semi-automatic rifle. The officers returned fire and entered the home in an attempt to take the man into custody. The man continued firing, wounding all three officers.

Officer Morton remained in a bedroom for several minutes before being rescued by the other officers. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

The subject then barricaded himself inside the home for several hours. A SWAT team entered the home shortly after midnight and located the subject deceased.

Officer Morton had served as both a reserve officer and full-time officer with the Clinton Police Department for three years. He had recently returned to full-time status following the line of duty death of Police Officer Gary Michael on August 6th, 2017. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard and is survived by his parents and siblings.

Filling in for another officer that died in the line of duty. What's going on there? Such a shame. RIP Officer Morton.

This one is becoming more complicated.

The officers were sent to the wrong home - in the wrong town. While I get that what occured on the officers behalf was in good faith, the homeowner responded to what he perceived as a home invasion. Now he and one officer are deceased and two other officers are injured from gunshots.

This story becomes more tragic as it unfolds.

I have 2 nephews who live in Clinton, MO & my brother and sister-in-law live just a few miles away. I used to hunt deer just outside of Clinton. This is usually a quiet mid-sized town (town, not city). In the course of 7 months they've now lost 2 LEO's from Clinton in the line of duty. For such a small place, the effects of these losses are huge.

May all involved find peace.

I've got a friend that used to live in Clinton, MO, and he's still got ties back there. He says the whole community is just reeling from the loss. :(

Missouri officer killed: He was dispatched to the wrong house, state patrol says (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/missouri-officer-killed-he-was-dispatched-to-the-wrong-house-state-patrol-says/ar-BBK1xpt)

The three Clinton Police Department officers, however, shouldn't have been sent to the Clinton address because the 911 call originated from an address in nearby Windsor, Missouri, Sgt. Bill Lowe of the highway patrol said Wednesday during a news conference.

The 911 request was "somehow attached" to the Clinton site, which is about "14 or 15 miles" away from its origin in Windsor, Lowe said.

"As (for) the 911 call that came in, we were later able to determine that it was not from that residence in which they were responding to," Lowe said.

A computer system traced the call -- during which no one spoke directly to a dispatcher -- to Clinton instead of Windsor, Lowe said, adding that he could not speak to specifics about the call system.
