I know I spent a pretty penny on some guns and I should spend just as much for the optic. But I'm not convinced since the maker only saw fit to slap some flip up sites or crude peepsights on the gun to begin with. So I have been wondering what is a good all around optic that will stay put on the gun and hold zero and doesn't take away from the gun by costing more in some cases.
There is EOTech which I like and some knock offs that maybe hit or miss. There is the ACOG too. But that is one of those optics that will cost more than the gun in the case on the AR platform.
Something good that I can buy over and over and will work on an AR, PS90 and even a Kriss Vector. A good go to red dot or holographic. I don't mind magnification either. But I have several scopes that I keep around for the next .22 or bigger purchase.
First world problems for sure.

For a red dot, I really like one of two options:

Vortex SPARC AR
http://www.vortexoptics.com/category/sparc_ar_red_dot
Can be had for less than $175 shipped, if you look around.

Primary Arms 30mm Red Dot
http://www.primaryarms.com/pa30mmrd-ad
Reliable, fast, easy to use, and has survived some pretty harsh abuse on one of my AR's (fallen out of a SxS at 60, held zero).

I used to buy, and still have several, Primary Arms Advanced Micro Dot Sights, but the price went up, and it's basically the same price as the Vortex, and The Vortex Warranty is unbeatable.

SPARC AR is a pretty good little red dot for the money. I have one on a AR and a RONI I haven’t had any issues with mine except the scope caps broke but vortex will send ya new ones.

I have a sparc ar and my vote still goes for the aimpoint pro. Something about a sub $500 optic that you can leave turned on 24/7 for years that I find appealing I guess.

For sub $400, Trijicon MRO

For sub $200, Sparc AR

What's so great about it?

They've crunched the numbers/overcharged to a degree where they feel comfortable hedging against the fact that them replacing defective, chinese-made units won't statistically kill profit margin.

translation: no questions asked replacement or repair on any vortex product.

Also, don't take this as a slight against vortex. Any company that offers such a warranty is either confident in their products or confident in their bottom line and casts that as confidence in their products. My concern is more with companies that DON'T offer such a warranty but offer products with a similar chance of failure.

I had exact same pics, but I have switched from the PA to the Holosun 503 w/ ACSS.

65MOA Ring and BDC AND a chevron AND 50000hr battery AND auto ON feature for $200

Burris
AR-332
MTAC 1-4

Has etched reticle, so reticle still works when batteries die.
Only drawback is their weight - not a lot, but they are heavier than more expensive options.

Every Burris optic is covered by the Burris Forever Warranty™. We will repair or replace your Burris optic if it is damaged or defective. The warranty is automatically transferred to future owners.

No repair or replacement charge
No warranty card needed
No receipt needed
No questions asked

The Burris Forever Warranty does not cover loss, theft, deliberate damage or cosmetic damage that does not hinder the performance of the product.

for a rds
Burris fast fire 3

Vortex (take your pick)

PA (again take your pick)

for magnified / scope. The crossfire II 1-4 is very good for the price point . Same for the burris MTAC or XTR series.

Been digging the Primary Arms 1-6x with the ACSS reticle. For RDS I've been using the Holosun 50k hour battery life RDS.

They work swell for my uses...

Thank you for all the advice. It gives me a lot to go on.
One last question if I may. What is your favorite optic? And why?

Didn't those who replied already answer that, for the price point you inquired about?

If price wasn't an issue. For under $500 I was thinking something I would buy for myself. I was asking for your top favorite optic. If I could I would just throw an EOTech or ACOG on everything.

On an AR platform, it would be a 1-6x or 1-8X scope. I have the SWFA 1-6X and US Optics SR-8S on a couple of ARs that is hard to beat for me.
