Stephen Hawking died Wednesday after complications due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease. He was 76.
In 1963, when he was just 21 years old, Hawking was famously diagnosed with the debilitating motor neuron disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Though 80 percent of those with ALS die within five years of diagnosis, and Hawking’s own doctors gave him roughly two years to live (http://www.hawking.org.uk/), he survived for decades, perhaps longer than any other patient with the disease in medical history (http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/02/24/how-stephen-hawking-survived-longer-than-possibly-any-other-als-patient/).

ETA: GK beat me to the punch, but I merged his thread and mine.
Hawking's family has confirmed that he died today at his home in Cambridge. Hawking was 76 years old which is almost miraculous since he was diagnosed with ALS when he was just 21. Doctors at the time gave him a life expectancy of only 2 years, but he had a slowly progressive version of the disease.
Hawking was a genius mathematician and probably best known for his work in theoretical physics. While his disease dibilitated his body, his mind seemed to grow stronger. One can only imagine the things he could have shown us had he had full functionality of both his mind and body.
Many believe that Hawking was nearing the verge of some amazing discoveries that could have significantly changed how we see our world and the universe. His contributions to science will be missed.
:(
The world is diminished for his passing. We were so fortunate to have him as long as we did!

He beat the odds for a LONG time.
R.I.P. Stephen.

Oh damn. He was an amazing man. RIP
Brief history of time is why I got into physics. RIP.

and, he maintained a sense of humor.
"May you keep flying like superman in microgravity."
RIP to an icreadable mind.
ALS patients don’t usually last more than 2-5 years.
and, he maintained a sense of humor.
Not to mention his appearences on ST:TNG and The Big Bang Theory.

RIP and God speed.
Famous for coming up with new theories of the universe, and even refuting his own previous theories.
I don't get it.
Would be interesting to be there when he meets his Maker though.

From my understanding, Mr. Hawking was an admitted atheist.

Welcome Mr. Hawking. You were seen as a very wise man on earth...

... too bad you denied Me and taught as many others as you could to also deny Me. You have earned a special place in the Hell you did not believe exists.

Didn't he recently say the earth was doomed within the next 100 years? That we needed to colonize Mars or the moon or something because of global warming?
He understood things I never will. But he was out there on a few things, too.
He lived in the theoretical.
Rip. I'd say there will never be another but I'm sure he would be the first one to correct me stating that the mathematics proves otherwise given an infinite amount of time.

I wrote him a letter. I got a reply from his assistants, basically saying he was too busy. He did say, not to send any signals to extraterrestrial civilizations. We would be doomed if it wasn't for the Arecibo message. I really like Cambridge, very nice area. I would love to retire in that area of the world. Farewell Mr Hawking.

Not sure he took into account that continued human existence is not indefinite.

He did say that god and heaven are imaginary and for people that are afraid of the dark. . I was never a fan of Hawking. Never will be. Just my personal opinion.
Anyone believing in the Big Bang has to do so by faith, since the math simply doesn't work.
...but let's just ignore that.

I always wondered if ALS enabled Hawking to understand things better than others simply because all he could do effectively was think. When your body fails you and all you can do all day is think about solving mathematical problems it's not too much of a surprise that he could figure crap out that other people couldn't. Everyone else is burdened by having to deal with everything else in their normal daily lives.
Possible, but he was like that before he was diagnosed.
