Why Denver Post Staffers Not Targeted by Layoffs Could Still Be Leaving

http://www.westword.com/news/denver-post-layoffs-2018-identities-of-those-leaving-10128407

The Denver Post announced thirty layoffs, or nearly one-third of its newsroom staff, on March 14. Just shy of two weeks later, we still don't know the identities of all those who'll be leaving, and that information won't be made official for two more, thanks to a complicated system that allows some laid-off workers to "bump" individuals who haven't been notified that their positions could be in danger. But at present, no daily reporters are being targeted, with the layoffs focusing on what Denver Newspaper Guild administrative officer Tony Mulligan refers to as "the second set of eyeballs."

Veteran outdoor writer Jason Blevins voluntarily chose to leave the Post after news of the downsizing broke, and in conversation with Westword, he blasted Alden Global Capital, the paper's hedge fund owner, which is reportedly making the cuts to maintain a profit margin on the property in the 20 percent range. Others who've revealed that they're moving on include Kourtney Geers, the Post's director of digital news production, and travel editor/feature writer Jenn Fields.

In other pieces I've seen them blame owners (hedge fund) instead of their hard-left bias which has isolated the 50% of the state, most of which still read print.

I no longer give the ComPost any views/clicks. Back when I used to comment I realized it was 50/50 Conservatives/Libs. If we stop reading, they stop being able to pay the bills. Comments are shifting way from articles to other platforms as well. I get asked at King's if I want a trial and ask if they're going to pay me.

There is a hard business side to propaganda (for now). No matter hard they believe, they still need salaries, and fewer people in CO have been willing to buy their fishwrap.

1/3 cut is huge and it still only gets them 20%. Expect more syndicated national news (WashPo, AP, etc...) and less local coverage. I've seen stories where it's cut-and-paste from ChalkBeat. Just pass-through propaganda from DNC HQ. Zero journalism happening in that "news room."

I wish we could get the RMN back!

Isn't 20% a HUGE profit margin?

Fortune 500 companies are only running about a 5% margin, or so I was taught back in college and high school.

They could shitcan 3/4 of staff and still "go to press" Based on how many "op ed's" they run from AP, Huffpo, the wapo or other news outlet writers.

Good.

From horse and buggy to automobile.

From dirty red commie tree-killing newsprint to the digital age. :)

Printed media should have disappeared ten or fifteen years ago. I’m honestly surprised there are still newspapers being printed in this age.

Seems I remember what I guess amounted to a rumor that the RMN was going to be resurrected. Clearly it didn't happen, but I do kinda miss the opportunity to look through it.

If the Post goes under and you need some over the top liberal crap to read, just go over to Yahoo. I catch the news on several sites and it is all crap, but wow, Yahoo is like living in a parallel universe. I refer to it as The Yahoo Inquirer, they don’t have news stories about anything important.

When the masses are getting their "news" from social media, print is dead. Fake news is where it's at.

good. let that liberal dumpster fire go out of business. I'd rather have no news than slanted fake news.

The Denver Post going under will save a whole bunch of trees and the plants that inks are derived from and there'll be less greenhouse gases, less carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and less global warming as a result. I can't see how this is a bad thing? [emoji846]

It should make the tree huggers real happy.

Trees grown for paper pulp are a renewable resource. They have about a 15-year growth to harvest cycle. If you want to take an environmental stand, you're forgetting that when a tree takes in CO2 and creates cellulose fiber, it's actually sequestering carbon from the atmosphere until it either decomposes or is burned.

Many of the inks are soy based, and I don't eat it, so I really don't care. [Coffee]

Maybe the Post can start taking ads for private massages and weed shops that take up 75% of the print space and they could stay in business.

I quit paper(s) when they would not let anyone (except dealers) advertise firearms.
Will NOT miss them at all.

As for pet birds and swatting the pup, there are still those weekly ads that come in the mail.
Those can't go away, how else would I get my 20% off coupons for Harbor Freight?

My folks still read their local paper every day. I would imagine that they're not unique for those that still like an old fashioned newspaper while they're having their morning coffee. The target audience for newspapers are likely the over 65 demographic.

Me, I'm on computers all day for work and get my news live. The lame stream news usually is a day behind, so I don't get the appeal of newsprint.

They sent 1 week of papers to my townhome. They piled up before I got a letter from the HOA. Sent a copy to the DP to get their litter, and told the HOA that the DP was dispositing garbage on my porch and said they are responsible, not me for disposing of the litter.

Haven't seen the bag of rags since.

I don't see but a hand full of paper in my neighborhood. Most are in their 40 to 60s. Dying media. Our HOA setup a recycle bin at the mail kiosks for the junk mail.

Noticed while browsing news articles last night that you can only read a paragraph of Denver Post articles before they want you to pay. That can't help.

There is a HF coupon app for your phone. HFT Coupons. Never have to think ahead to print the damn things out. They scan the codes right from your phone. Almost always a 20%er on it also.

I blocked cookies from denverpost.com and it seemed to stop doing that to me.

For awhile, you could clear your cookies when you hit the limit, but that stopped working a few weeks ago. The blocking seems to have done the trick--for now, anyway.

DP has resorted to accosting people at liquor stores now. They had a table at the front of an aisle in my nearby store and I had to run past them to get the beer section.
