View Full Version : California refugee checking in
Hey guys,
Been in the Colorado shooting scene for a year now and thought I'd finally make an account. You may have seen me at Byers Action Rifle matches or various USPSA matches around the front range.
I moved to Colorado for school 8 years ago and never looked back at California. Don't worry, I am not trying to bring anything remotely related to California here to CO.
Thank you guys for being so welcoming on the range and hope to see you around!

Welcome, join the fray.
Can you tell your friends to stop moving here?

Yes, let's. I just dropped off some parts at CMS Armory for Cerakoting. Going to do a FDE/Patriot Brown 12.5" build. How anyone manages to wait for stamps without going crazy is beyond me.... Only 6 more months to go hopefully...

Seems like CO is going that way isn't it? I was born and raised in San Francisco.... Quite happy to be out of that city. I have emergency plans to move to Idaho or Montana if this whole thing goes sideways.

I'll put out a memo.

Look at it this way. At least you're now allowed to own items like that , legally.
Frisco eh?

Yes, I am extremely grateful and happy to exercise my rights. My family is extremely anti-gun, but I think my mom at least has started to recognize USPSA as a legitimate sport.
Yup, San Francisco.... With a brief 4 year stint in Hong Kong. I like going back for the Mexican food and my old friends but that's pretty much it.
I have a cousin in the bay.....we don't talk......
Nice that's a good tinted fde! As far as stamps I only have dreams right now but I have buddies that let me drool on their class 3 fun every now and then.
I hear the Mexican food is comparable here. Is it?
Hello and welcome!
Enjoy!![Beer]

[Wave] Howdy!

So far, not really. There is a spot in Colorado Springs called El Poblano Mobile that is literally a school bus that has been converted into a Mexican restaurant. That's the closest I've found, but I have tried all the places yet. I've heard there are some great spots on Federal.

I don't really talk to my family in the bay much either.
I'm so excited to put it together, I figured the Patriot Brown/Fde would be unique enough to preserve my status as a special snowflake while still being able to blend in Northern CO.
I want buddies with class 3 goodies.
Most chain restaurants are probably similar to the rest of the country. There are a lot of little carnicerías around town though that feel pretty authentic.
I’m a fan of Los Dos Potrillos. They have few around Denver metro. Wouldn’t know how it compares to Mexican food from Cali and don’t ever plan to visit there.

I know where I'm going next, thanks for the tip.

Welcome from the foothills just west of you.
Sorry your arrival to Boulder area has brought the prospect of California style laws right here in town.

Thanks for the welcome. I agree that this shit legislation sucks. I'm going to do everything I can to make my voice heard, and hope we get some legal muscle on our side.
Welcome!

Boulder's The Other CO, not northern.
I have a decent central CA chili verde recipe.

Being a CA native, I find most of Mexican food in CO to be marginal at best. A lot of it trends towards Tex-Mex which is an abomination as far as I’m concerned. If you’re ever up in Fort Collins or Greeley you can find good CA style taqueria called Los Comales.

Most chain restaurants, I would agree (and boy do I love those places). I've been frequenting more places that are all in Spanish and more likely to be next to a laundry mat than a bank though, and I wonder about those. Sounds pretty much like what you're describing above.

I've found the CA style chili is more a tomatillio style than the green they serve around CO. We could always get a NoCo mexican food lunch going. There's Sol De Jalisco south part of windsor.

I’d agree, the green chili around here is often not actually even green in color. We always make our chili verde with lots of tomatillos and jalapeños, so it’s green, and it’s tangy. Roasted green tomatoes from the garden are also a good stand in for tomatillo flavor.
Sol De Jalisco isn’t bad, inconsistent to me. I think their chefs vary widely in skill and style, in fact 50% of the time if I ask for something slightly different they say “oh we have a new chef and they won’t know how to do that,” but it’s very close for me so I do eat it in a pinch. If I have time I go to Los Comales in Greeley. Pollos El Guero in Windsor is a hole in the wall Mexican chicken restaurant that has el Pollo Loco style chicken which I like as well. Their service pretty consistently takes a while though. They don’t seem to be able to keep enough chicken grilled up and I always seem to have to wait for it to be finished. The biggest indicator to me is the the people eating at the place around you. If you go to Pollos El Guero or Los Comales you are usually surrounded by Mexican families or blue color Mexican workers. That’s always a good sign you’re eating authentic Mexican food.

Umm If you eat anywhere in greality, you're surrounded by mexicans ;)
Guys I really appreciate you sharing your best Mexican spots. I'll have to check out Los Comales next time I'm heading back from a Weld match.

Coming back from the 2A rally on Saturday, I stopped by El Nopalito on Alameda in Denver and it was pretty freaking good. Just FYI for anyone interested
I hope you learned to never doubt me again.

It was a lesson well learned. Maybe we need to pool resources and assemble a list of the best Mexican places in CO.

There is some freakin' good mexican food in this town. Stay off of yelp and follow the low-riders...
I got a couple of spots to share if we start a thread. You will need to be leaving your MAGA hats at home in these places though.

That sounds like the real deal
Can I wear my MAGA (My Attorney Got Arrested) T-shirt though?

Can I wear my MAGA (My Attorney Got Arrested) T-shirt though? That's funny. Almost as good as the t-shirt I saw in New Orleans after Katrina F.E.M.A. (Find Every Mexican Available). Should of bought one of those!
