Allowing qualified teachers to arm themselves is just nuts....but this seems like a good idea.
A Pennsylvania school district's decision to arm teachers with tiny wooden baseball bats in the event of an active shooter situation is not a hit with parents.
The Millcreek Township School District outside of Erie gained attention this week for handing out the 16-inch bats to about 500 teachers as part of a training that included how to react during a school shooting.

"We passed them out, with the goal being we wanted every room to have one of these," Hall said of his district of more than 7,000 students. "Unfortunately, we're in a day and age where one might need to use them to protect ourselves and our kids."

Those are basically like the kind given away at baseball games. They break easily if wood.
Don't bring a mini-bat to a gunfight. Symbolic gestures are not the answer to real problems...unless 'feels' is more important to you than reality.

Why so serious? I don't tolerate incompetence and indifference well. This proposal was idiotic, and the fact that they didn't notice and went forward with it, demonstrates utter indifference for the safety of their students.

If we hide and watch these idiots long enough we will get a study in the history of primitive weapons. These morons are like watching a cave man trying to decide if rocks or a stick would work better. Pretty soon they will be building a bow and arrows or chipping a spear point out of rocks. As I have said before they are at least teaching that you need a good weapon to fight evil. Just real sad to watch this primitive progression they are taking to get there.

One for a baseball, and mini bat for self defense. He might get fired/sued if he accidently uses actual size bat to defend against the bad guy with firearm.
Probably can't have a modern aluminum assault bat. The old school wooden ones might be OK.

Heck, the school district that was issuing buckets of rocks was better than this ... at least rocks are free and you can throw them farther than you can whiff with that "bat" ...
So the anti-gun company line after Parkland was that "a highly trained cop with a 9mm handgun can't be expected to stand up to a shooter with a high-powered, military-grade assault rifle . . . so we can't just allow teachers to carry handguns."
But mini baseball bats . . . now THAT's got potential.

Would a kid who brought a mini bat to school be expelled for bringing in a weapon? I realize it's not as dangerous as a pop tart chewed into the shape of a gun, but zero tolerance and all that.

Look at it positively, at least they are moving in the right direction of arming the teachers with "something". What "something" is down the road can be adjusted/upgraded, but it at least gives the mindset of fighting back a foothold, and a step into the classroom. Beats the "quietly cower on the floor behind a closed door" and opens the door to taking pro-active action.
Small steps in the right direction beat no progress at all, or worse, the wrong direction. The left is king of doing this, and has been successful to a degree. Understand the tools and tactics and the possible uses of said tactics.
