View Full Version : Rust/sweat protection on slide

My Shield's slide developed quite a lot of pitting by sitting against my skin in the summer time, most likely due to sweating.
To the point that that I just sent it back to S&W to see if it may be a finish problem.
I'd like to keep this from happening in the future.
An article on Brownell's gave high grades to using WD-40.
Not sure whether I should let it sit on the slide for a while, just wipe down the slide with it, how often?
What is the general wisdom?
I don't necessarily want to go through the whole Cerakote/Duracoat route on such an inexpensive gun....

A holster with a sweat shield will help. If that is not an option, and I find myself in the same situation, when I take my M&P Shield off after wearing it, I always wipe down the exposed slide then add some gun oil to it, rub it in with a cotton rag and let it sit until the next day.

Irving had the same problem with his Smith. Must partly be a persons PH level.

Ayup, some people have sweat that is like nitric acid.

I used a holster with a sweat shield or a pocket holster when hot out. Because of pocket carry I inspect and de-lint every evening after carrying.

I thought the Shield slide was stainless steel?

Stainless can corrode and less pure forms can certainly rust. I worked with many different stainless alloys when I was working as a machinist. The stuff we used for military parts was always top grade and sometimes very hard to machine, needing special cutting tools (expensive) to get the job done.

Wife beater would help some. At least the firearm wouldn’t be in direct contact with your skin.

I thought the Shield slide was stainless steel?

My M&P rusted right next to the Stainless Steel rollmark.

Edit: I'll dig up the photos when I get home, but the thread is still on here.

I had issues with leather holsters retaining moisture. Smith & Wesson replaced my slide. It sounds like an under shirt would solve your issue. As Ray said, wife beaters are the least like wearing a shirt, but at also long enough to tuck into your pants.

Kydex blocks moisture from your body, or at least doesn't retain it. Nylon breaths better. My solution was to line the back of my IWB leather holster with duct tape. That might be pretty uncomfortable without a shirt though.

Never had an issue (no smiths), but always do this.

sounds to me like a simple undershirt or better holster that keeps it away from the skin is all that's needed.

A holster with a sweat shield will help.
This. I personally don't like the feeling of a slide against my body. The 'rough side' of the gunleather sweat shield feels perfectly natural to me.

I also think some people just have very reactive perspiration. I've known guys that can pit a gun just by touching it and not wiping it down, where I don't have that problem at all.

Then again, I'm not that prone to getting sweaty (I'm allergic to those situations).

Well, holster is not in the picture, the gun is my home carry and sits in my shorts with a clip draw.
What I am asking about is some product I can apply to the slide to eliminate or at least minimize the issue.

Cosmoline?

Irving

You'll just have to wipe it off frequently. If you don't like the cosmoline idea, you could "apply" duct tape directly to the slide. Start a trend.

Middle School kid: Check out my duct tape wallet!
Luigi: Wait till you see this....

For serious corrosion resistance I would suggest getting the slide coated with Cerakote. This stuff has better corrosion resistance than most other coatings and much better than the stock M&P coating. I listed a link to their product testing guide compared to other coatings. The only bummer with Cerakote is that its not as "hard" as other coatings and will wear through faster than most other harder coatings that are less corrosion resistant. For example, Cerakote vs a Kydex holster will be a losing battle within a few hundred draws. I am not sure about Cerakote vs leather, but I would assume that its not as abrasive as kydex. If you are interested Rick Hebert Firearms does Cerakote and can get whatever color you want. Check his website at www.rickhebert.com

Why? I can make you a custom one with a clip draw and a sweat shield.

As far as treating the slide with something like oil or wd40, I don’t think you want any chemicals rubbing against your skin all day. That’s going to irritate the shit out of your skin and cause problems.

Putting duct tape on the back of my holster solved the issue.

I hadn't worn it for probably a year before I sold it to Great Kazoo for $950 last week. Here is how it looked. The slide finish wore off from holster wear in the about the same place anyway.

That is new leather that I had replaced about a year or two ago. It is disgusting, which is most of the reason that I posted a picture of it. The other reason is to show how great of a sweat barrier that duct tape has been. I think most people don't carry as frequently, or for as many hours as I do, and of those that do, they probably aren't as sweaty. I don't think of myself as a particularly sweaty guy, but then again, I'm not running around touching other dudes so I guess I don't really know.

Irvings issues are the reason I don't carry IWB. Quality leather holsters stained and crusty in less than a month. High amounts of salt and acids when sweat and I sweat alot.

I never left pistol in holster when took it off at night and had to wipe/oil daily in summer.

My carry gun stays much cleaner carrying OWB even in dusty environments I live and work in.

Leather tanning materials can exude salts that greatly increase corrosion. Try a saddle soap, softens, preserves and cleans the leather.

Damn, some of you guys sure run hot. I have leather holsters I've worn 12-15 hours daily for YEARS that don't show any signs of sweat.

No kidding. I always keep an undershirt between my skin and my holster, but even when i'm drenched in sweat, it doesn't permanently discolor my holster.

After the saddle soap, treat the holster with mink oil. This is done with a cotton ball soaked in water. Same as spit shining boots technique.
