View Full Version : Help Me Understand the Nextdoor App & Community
I've been poking around with the Nextdoor app on my phone. I've heard about how it can be useful in finding out what's going on in my community.
As with most things "social media", I find them to be a cesspool of the worst of human nature that's difficult to stomach. Dr. Grey mentioned some tips & tricks to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, so I figured I'd start a thread to figure out how to make this something useful.
I did see a notice from Dougco Sheriff's Office that Stage 1 Fire Restrictions were lifted. I also can get an idea of what's going on with the "Crime & Safety" category. The information about what's going on with South Metro Fire protecting our neighborhoods is good to know.
Some recommendations of local fencing and deck companies has given me some options to research.
The rest of it...seems to be a hot mess. A guy looking for seasonal labor to do exterior painting at $10-15/hour gets some yahoo immediately complaining "That is NOT a living wage. You must be looking for high school kids..." If you're not interested, STFU, but there's always some SJW yahoo waiting to jump into every discussion. That kind of garbage I don't have any tolerance for.
I also don't need to be bombarded by old crap that you're trying to sell rather than donate to ARC or Goodwill.
Is there any hope of making this a useful tool, or do I need to uninstall it and get my info via something like Twitter where the DCSO puts up info?
My wife uses it down here, too . . . and she seems to find that it's much like you described. Some useful information but a high degree of unproductive noise. Based on that, I haven't really wanted to check it out myself. But if someone has some clues on making it more appealing, I'd be interested too.

Nextdoor is pretty weak. If you want real drama go to citydataforum.com

Looking for data, not drama.

It's exactly like posting on here, but your neighbors and people in the surrounding neighborhoods. The difference is here people build relationships and a lot of stuff gets over looked. On Nextdoor, everything is very public so everyone is guarded and you aren't really developing relationships like you might here.
I almost never see anything useful on Nextdoor. Mainly people complaining about HOA, wondering what the random booming noises are (uhhh Fort Carson duh?), alerts about their "baby Snickerdoodles McFluffFace got out. If you see a roid-raging pit bull, he's soooo friendly please bring him back kthxbye!", the turkey flock on X road and then an argument erupts after someone makes a hunting comment, etc.
I did have some luck w/ getting rid of scrap wood on there. I got some free river rock off there too. Intel gathering/data/localized situational awareness has not been its strong suit.

I was linked into that for my area for over a year, and I turned it off. I did score a decent used dresser from another user at a fair price, but that's about all the positive I got from it.
Most messages to my phone were about mundane shit that I could care less about. YMMV.

In Golden it is mostly to rant against fish and wildlife for shooting bears.
My all-time favorite thread went something like this:
Idiot 1: Did you hear gunshots last night?
Idiot 2: I heard about 7
Idiot 3: It wasn't gunshots
Idiot 1: It was definitely gunshots. I know gunshots.
Idiot 2: It sounded like it came from the park.
Idiot 3: Well, I found these spent fireworks at the park (insert pic of spent fireworks)
Troll 1: I'll shoot my gun tonight so you know what it sounds like

Up here, it is used mostly to sell things that won't fit into garbage cans, and to complain about the waste burners on the local fracking rigs.
There's a good deal of nformation that you can get from Nextdoor, but you should look at it as a place to start, not as a self-contained tool.
You're right; there's a massive amount of nattering drama to be found in every neighborhood. Ours is filled with hand-wringers and wrist-flailers that still haven't gotten over the fact that an actual HOOTERS took over the TGIFriday's, three years ago. There will be the ever-present political differences raised in the guise of guns, children, taxes, and education; there will be massive amouts of unneccessary coyote warnings, there will be the incessant discussions of outdoor/indoor cats, and the egging of houses by no-good punks.
If you can reset the baseline to filter out the nonstop noise, you can use Nextdoor to learn things that are actually helpful. I've managed to find some excellent handymen, found a local cat-sitter, discovered a procedure for cutting through red tape when filling out some unpleasant paperwork, and of course the county sheriff department's information is always good. You can get quite a decent list of contractors set up for yourself, so when you need a plumber immediately, you don't have to sift through the posts when it's too late.
Of course, the thing I think I like best is the Crime Watch portion- I don't know about your neighborhood, but mine is pretty tight and filled with Nosy Parkers. We had some petty thugs make the poor decision to try and steal cars in the neighborhood, and not only did we have neighbors call the DCSD, they posted the theives' progress right down to which street they were on, and which yards they were crossing.
You can also block especially exacerbating idiots, so you no longer see their drama.

I like how, literally every time, someone sets off a bottle rocket the forum explodes with gunshot reports. Cracks me up.
But yes, it’s a mess. I was interested in it for a little while but it seems to have gotten worse over time.

I find the Nextdoor app fairly useful at times. If I’m buying or selling stuff, it keeps me one step removed from the wider audience of Craigslist. I also like hearing who’s done a good job as a contractor in the neighborhood and who to avoid.
People also do a pretty good job “outing” themselves as ultra liberal California transplant soccer moms so I’ll know who to avoid. I have also observed that my neighborhood has a large population of people who wouldn’t know which end of a screwdriver to use. “A bulb burned out in my dining room light fixture. Which electrician do you all use to change light bulbs?”
I’ve blocked a few people and that helps with the signal to noise ratio. I’ve also turned off all the email and text alerts. I just check the app every day or two to see if there’s anything interesting going on.

I'm in process of moving and have used it to sell some stuff. Pretty easy for that. I don't spend any time looking through it though.

I'm in Windsor as well. It's funny to see the difference when I step out of my very specific neighborhood (Peakview) as opposed to the town as a whole. All my neighbors seem to want is for someone to buy their trash. And complain about the mailman putting the wrong mail in boxes. I do love the ones that say "can someone help me reach something off the top of my shelf?".

It’s funny that you mention the mail service thing. That’s been a huge topic of discussion in my neighborhood, too. I can’t count on the mail service AT ALL. If I’ve got outgoing mail, I just take it directly to the post office. Our mailman looks like he should be smoking pot in Boulder. The first time I saw him getting into the mail truck, I thought he was stealing it.
I’m sure each neighborhood has its own personality. Mine is full of over indulged new money California immigrants. They come to town having sold their 2 bedroom condo in Berkeley for $1.3 million and think they’re wizards of industry and commerce when they buy their $800k McMansion for cash. They then proceed to attempt to turn the neighborhood into their rural Colorado version of Berkeley.
Nextdoor reminds me that I’m the outlier in the neighborhood. Hell, washing my own car in the driveway makes me a peasant. I thought someone was going to have me arrested for performing Manual Labor when I painted one side of my house **by myself—with a brush** last summer.

You must be in Water Valley or Highlands Park. I'm on the 'blue collar' side, where homes top out at around $450K. You got all the Californians who bought out all the Kodak people who got killed in the recession. I got all the upper-middle class who are buying out the oil field workers after having been priced out of Fort Collins. We still have a few F250s with Miller Electric rigs on the back, but they are disappearing quickly, and being replaced by the 5 year old Audis, Infinities, and GMC Yukons of the wanna-be pretentious.
We probably have the same mail carrier though, and he sucks. On two occasions, he's forgotten to lock the main panel of our box system, and the neighborhood has been free to rifle through eachother's mail. When I've called the Windsor Post Office, they didn't seem too concerned about it, though. Me and my actual neighbors swap mail once or twice a week, so at least he's bringing the community together in his own way.
Before I got kicked off of Nextdoor I used to enjoy the absolute uproar created by one just every time she posted about the growing number of cats she has cured of Luekemia with massage, essential oils, and just the right healthy diet.
Before I got kicked off of Nextdoor...
I now have something new to aspire to.[Coffee]
All you have to do is use your first name for both first and last name and then encounter some punk bitch out of Commerce City who will complain about not using your real name. I thought about getting an internet lawyer to threaten Nextdoor into letting me knowingly violate their rules, but instead I simply replied to the poster that I like my real name so much that I've used it twice and that they were in no place to be pointing out use violations since I assumed it was some woman using her husband's account (it was male name).
The website sent me an email saying I was suspended until I changed my name. Naturally, my first thought was to comply so I could get back on the site, find that user, track down their address using their conveniently provided real name and neighborhood, and then look them up on the county assessor website to see if he was up to date on his property taxes. If not, I'd start paying the taxes myself. If he was, then I'd drive by the house and document any and every code violation I could find in hopes to tie his money and time up fighting with the government while I move in on the taxes in the background. Maybe start a handy man business, do some work, not get paid the full amount and file a Mechanics lien on the house. Then when the property was legally mine, take a bunch of pictures of all his belongings in the front yard after the eviction and start a thread on Nextdoor offering everything for free just to get it off my lawn. Followed by a story of how I came to acquire this shit hole property and all the useless garbage inside it. See where following the user agreement and running your mouth got you mother fucker? HOMELESS THAT'S WHERE! MAKE SURE YOU USE YOUR FULL NAME ON YOUR SECTION 8 APPLICATION FORMS!
But ultimately I just never logged in again and found a new YouTube channel to occupy my time.

There's this one whacked out lady that has to post with multiple emojis and sentences in all caps. Makes me just want to find her and slap her silly. Sillier. She was frantic after the Parkland shooting and just losing her total shit. Got like three threads deleted before she quit.
Frantic in what way? Like the other 20 school shootings over the years she was fine with, but this one broke the camel's back?
Watching those elephants would have been cool.
Oh the disappointment, there’s no “Nextdoor” community in my area. Shucks

Yeah, I think I’m technically in Colorado Sierra II so there’s not one for me. I believe the whole county should be the neighborhood or maybe just a few partitions considering that the whole county only has roughly 5k total residents.

Bunch of drama queens & passive aggressive tards. And when it comes to wildlife, totally clueless.
Not my account, the wife’s. The latest was a picture of a garter snake claiming they had a rattlesnake in their driveway. The best was a picture of someone’s loose dog and warning about the coyote running around the hood, you could even see the collar around the dogs neck in the picture.
I lasted about two weeks before I was called a racist, nazi, and that I should die.
Oddly enough I was banned when I replied my aren’t you a precious little peter puffer... if you want to be billy badass on an app, you can see where I live cmon over and chat..

I'm nearly banned. Lady keeps flagging our posts. Someone posted about "lady so and so, you had no reason to ban my post etc etc" and then multiple people jumped in and said the same thing, same lady had killed many folks posts. Including the one about us bitching about her.
So I filed a complaint against that moderator. They told me I violated the rules by talking smack about a moderator. But this other moderator has "taken action" against this lady moderator. Whatever that means.
We also have a guy nearby that is a real ass. Steve H. He hates the USA and wants us all to chip in $'s so he can move to Sweden. Even has a go fund me setup for it. He'll cause all kinds of trouble and hate for most anyone and any subject posted.
So far he's got 0.00 $'s funded to him.

I changed my name a while back, shortened my last name so people can't find me as easy. Nobody has complained. I see others who are using misspelled names etc. Figured I was ok to do the same.
My wife uses Nextdoor for comedic relief and to score free stuff,(tickets to the train museum, baskets, etc) and for the comedic relief of one Terry Draper. Apparently this single poster is hated by every citizen of the town of Parker and is either the worlds best/worst troll, or a Crazy post Menopausal Cat Lady.

Can you donate a penny on gofundme, or does it have a minimum threshold? I can't tell you how many times and to how many unfunded campaigns I wanted to donate a single penny.
