View Full Version : Please teach people about guns
Please, please take the time to go over basic gun safety with people you know, especially new gun owners!
A friend of my wife was telling me a few weeks ago about her new Kimber Micro 9, and how she wanted to bring it over to show it to me. She never did.
Her service was today......[Cry]
Are you saying she accidentally shot herself or ... ?

Yes. Nobody knows for certain, but it appears she racked the slide to clear the chamber, THEN removed the magazine, not realizing -
That she'd just loaded a second round,
That her pistol did not have a magazine disconnect safety,
That her pistol did not have a grip safety,
That her pistol was loaded, cocked and VERY dangerous.
She was found fatally shot in the chest, in her basement office. This pistol was new and stiff, and she'd recently been trying to conquer it.

Wow.
Prayers for the family, and you and your wife being close.
It's always a good reminder to be vigilant. It's too easy if you get careless/flippant.
:(
May she rest in peace.

Sorry for the loss. Prayers sent.
That's a hard story.
Working with a young lady on shooting. Safety has been first, middle and last. Luckily she gets it.

I am so sorry for your loss Rondog. I have told SO many new gun owners that they should only load with live rounds AFTER they have learned the fundamentals of how the gun works, safe gun handling, etc. Unfortunately, too many people don't and start messing around with loaded firearms. Again, so sorry to hear this news.
I hope it's not seen as flippant or something. But in hindsight, it doesnt seem like the best beginners handgun either. Light little single action trigger, 1911 style. 1911's always seem to confuse new shooters more that I've seen. I still hate my wifes coworkers that pusher her into a Kimber CDP 2 in .40. (Soon discontinued after because it doesn't run for shit) Likewise super hard for her to rack etc.

Sorry for your loss, and with all due respect do you believe it could be intentional at all?
The last two people that I knew who committed suicide with a gun I never in 1 million years would’ve thought they wanted to die...

No, highly unlikely, happy life with a great family. Cops are calling it an accident. I haven't heard the report, but if they found the gun with the mag out, slide locked back, and one loose round with the mag - that would tell the tale. But I don't know if that's what they found, I can only speculate.
RIP Candie.....
Condolences, prayers. We all need to remember this lesson, and ensure we are stewards of firearm safety to all those around us, especially new shooters.

stories like this are what is motivating me to put my gun safety training program together which I will be working on this summer and hopefully starting presentations next year.

I'd have some questions if that is in fact what they found.

I know we want it to be highly unlikely, but most of the people I know that have committed suicide were not the ones you would expect.
Usually, the ones that you would think are likely to do it, have folks reach out and try to help. It doesn't always help, but it's kept the "likely candidates" from following through more times than not.
I've known people that have a publicly happy life, with a great family, that have been the ones to follow through.
The hardest one for me to comprehend was a 17yo son of a good friend. He had a great family, with parents who loved him dearly, younger siblings that looked up to him, he was a popular athlete at school, had a wonderful girlfriend, he was active in the church youth group, and on and on and on... Whatever darkness inside of him drove him to shoot himself, no one saw it in him.
I sincerely hope that your friend didn't commit suicide, and that it was an accident. For her family's sake, and yours as her friend.
I know this had to be hard to share. I am grateful that you did. I have instilled firearm safety in both my sons and everyone I know who I have personally instructed. I am very blessed to have never experienced an "accident" with a firearm and I solely contribute that to my overwhelming respect for them. This is a tragic loss and I send my sincere condolences to the family. Tell your loved ones that you love them - every. single. day.

The slide locked back without an empty mag in the gun?

Yeah, I know things like this are hard to process for family and friends of the deceased, but I found the description of the scene odd.

Gun mistakenly goes off. In panic, drops mag, racks slide and manually locks it back which ejects round in chamber. She parishes after.
Or, gun goes off racks slide, to see wtf, this thing was loaded, last round ejects with racking slide, ejects mag to check if again it was loaded. Slide is locked back due to mag being in the gun hand cycling last round. She parishes after. At least that's a few scenarios I thought of. Can't imagine what would be going through ones mind after an ND into the chest.
Such a sad situation and again, so sorry for the loss.
No no no, the classic mistake of unloading a semi-auto pistol the WRONG way.
If you rack the slide FIRST to clear the chamber, and remove the magazine SECOND - what did you just do? You just ejected the chambered round and loaded a second round before you dropped the mag, that's what you did! Always always ALWAYS, remove the magazine FIRST!
Now you have the single round you ejected, the magazine you just removed, and a pistol that you THINK is unloaded - but actually has a fresh live round in the chamber, and a cocked hammer. This was a Kimber Micro 9, a 1911, and had no magazine cutoff safety. That gun will fire with the mag removed.
It's also a very small pistol, and has no grip safety. It was also new, not broken in, and very stiff.
So now she's rasslling around an "unloaded" gun, with a live round in the chamber, and trying to figure out why it's so goddamn stiff.
If it then fired while she was handling it, the cops would have found - an empty gun with the slide locked back, the magazine removed, and one loose live round.
This is only how I speculate it may have happened. We may never know what really happened. But we miss her.....
does the slide lock back on that model when no magazine is present, though?
That's what I was thinking when I said I'd have some questions.
He was guessing what they would find, and that he doesn't have the report. Stating expecting a locked slide I would go with being a mental whoopsie on thinking thru a process experienced gun owners wouldnt have.

Ah, good point! A flaw in my theory. The follower in the empty magazine is what pushes up on the slide lock in a 1911 - I forgot that. Thank you!

That’s a lot to perform for someone who is in shock. I will refrain from posting anymore out of respect for the deceased, but I have questions.

We have questions too, but she was alone when it happened. Anybody have any connections w/Aurora PD?

I hope the PD only answers questions for her immediate family members. I despise anonymous and unnamed sources. If her family member(s) wish to share what they know, they will and they will choose who they share that information with.
What you have done by sharing the story is admirable because it serves as a reminder of why safety is important. I hope you can remember your friend for all the things she was to you, your family, and her family while she was with you. May God Bless you all and give you peace.
What a horrendous and avoidable mistake. I'm so sorry for you.

This pushed me to write a reminder about it. Feel free to share mine or one of the hundreds of other well-written articles, but share something with as many people as you can. Almost all accidents that end in tragedy could have most likely had a different ending if the rules of safety were followed.

It just so happens that the NRA is promoting mentoring for those not familiar with firearms.
Very sorry to hear about this.
