Just thought I share a good kind of amazing story about a family friend.

Almost 50 years ago he had a few firearms stolen from his house near Detroit Michigan, he now lives in Colorado Springs. The case went no where as I am sure most do. A few weeks ago he gets a call from an officer with City of Warren Police Dept. The officer explains they were removing items from evidence storage and they had one of his pistols. The officer tracked down his current location through Google and some phone calls. They sent the pistol to the Colorado Springs Police Dept and they returned it to him the other day. The officer didn't have any information on how it was recovered or the case it was involved with.

Better late than never.

IMO, it may be the only good to come from serial numbers.

Sounds like the old guy was pretty easy to track down. Having said that, plenty of officers went above and beyond to locate a crime victim after 49 years and return his property to him. Hats off to all involved in getting at least one very nice Colt back to it's rightful owner.

I had a stolen pistol that was recovered by Dallas, TX PD years later that was recovered after a high speed chase. Still have it in the safe. It was abused and refuses to function properly. Just waiting for a buyback somewhere that will make it lucrative enough to get rid of it. [Coffee]

Hopefully the firearm wasn't overly abused during the separation.

If guns could talk, it would be interesting to know what they were up to during their time away.

Yep, this is a win. I'm surprised they went to this much effort for a gun. Amazing that so many people got this to happen.
