If I purchase a firearm online and have it shipped to an FFL holder, do I have to pay sales tax?
Yes, I have to pay for the transfer fee and background check.
I know there has been a push to collect sales tax on mail order purchases. I am wondering if there are special requirements on guns.
I think you do have to pay sales tax. At least I'm pretty sure I did the last time I did this.
Yes and no.
You shouldn’t be charged any tax by your FFL as he didn’t sell you anything. Likely the out of state business you purchased from isn’t going to tax you either.
But, the state of Colorado does ask that you report all of your untaxed online purchases when you file your taxes so that you can pay the taxes then.
Clear as mud?

The merchant online isn't going to charge you sales tax, and the FFL where you pick it up isn't going to charge you sales tax.
If the online merchant has locations in colorado, they'd have to collect sales tax.

I just pulled up the paypal invoice on my M&P 15-22 that I bought online and had transferred and there was a sales tax included.
edit: nevermind, forgot he ordered mine directly and did the transfer.

What Ray said.
Since 1937, CO law requires all residents to pay "use tax" on any goods purchased on which CO sales tax was not already paid. There is a special form (DR0252) for it and everything.

And, the State is now making it easier and more convenient by allowing an annual Use Tax filing along with your Income Tax filing.
Currently, all that is required is the 2.9% Use Tax on the State Form, but if you live in a Home-Rule City, you need to check with them regarding their Tax Regulations.
Jake Jabs has been leading an effort to reduce the number of jurisdictions that require separate filings for years.
