I have a gun that I've done some amateur polishing on. I've got some of the parts to a level of shiny that is acceptable to me, though not quite "mirror finish." Some of the parts look like they might have some surface rust that is slowly gathering in the imperfections on the surface of the metal.

I'm wondering if there is some sort of clear coat I can put on my home polished parts that will keep moisture out. I know that clear coats exist, but it seems that I've never heard of anyone using them on any gun stuff before, so it makes me think that maybe it is just a problem with my work?

Any suggestions would be great. I guess I could post some pictures if anyone needs them.

Most clear coats are acrylic or polyeurathane(sp?)
None will hold up to hot gun temperatures.

Flitz Polish maybe?
Immediately after polishing you really need to oil metal parts to protect them. After polishing you have exposed bare metal with no corrosion protection.

I'm willing to bet a high temp powdercoat clear would prolly hold up ok

Try carnauba wax if these are parts which aren't going to get too hot.

You can DuraCoat in clear. It holds up quite well.

Just find a clearcoat based paint that's rated above 500 degrees. You'll never hit that mark unless its a machine gun.

Yeah, it's just the safety, hammer, slide stop lever, mainspring pin, etc, on a CZ that spends most of it's time in a case. Thanks for the input guys.

Por-15 makes a product called Glisten PC. Most of there products are really awesome and hold up pretty well to anything. I have used there products for close to 20 years.

Does a gun really get to 500 degrees? I would never think that.

Anyway, Glisten PC is designed to be painted over highly polished alluminum and steel. Really good stuff. Check it out, you should be able to get it at good paint and body equipment stores locally. If you decide you want to try it, let me know and I can get it for you.

Looks like you could buy it right from them, you will likely have to pay a hazardous shipping charge on it though. I don't know for sure though, so you may be better of getting it localy

Thank you VERY much. That is exactly what I am looking for. Just something that will allow me to paint on a light coat to keep rust away. I wish it came in smaller sizes though. I guess I'll just have to try it out, and if I like it, just polish a lot more stuff right? ;) Thanks again.

Do you know anything about the AP120 metal prep the website talks about?

Yeah, its like an "etch" of sorts, I would definitely recommend it.

Yeah he does seem drunk.

I suppose if you are going to do that, then you have bigger problems then your clear coat not being able to handle high tempatures. THat is quit excessive and quit redicilous.
