Ok. I tried out the AR today for the first time. Now, don't laugh too hard at the scope and mounts. Money is tight right now so I just set it up with what I had on hand for the time being. Leupold 4X scope and some cheap mounts I picked up somewhere. I had a few rounds of Federal American Eagle 55 grain fmj and I bought a box of HSM in the orange box. ($20.99 per 50 at Big R). Not bad stuff... Anyway, I got it zeroed in at 100 yds and shot some groups. I shot them off my shooting sticks as this is how I typically shoot prairie dogs. Here are pics of the rifle and my best 10 shot group. Yes, there are only 7 on the target, but the other 3 were close! I think my groups will tighten up a little with a better scope (higher magnification) and once I can get my dad to work on the trigger. Trigger breaks like a wet stick at about a bajillion lbs. All and all, I don't think its all that bad. The ar seems to be pretty accurate. Its not my Remington 700, but it is way better than I thought it would be.http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss307/greenscoutii/HPIM0315.jpg?t=1257044952http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss307/greenscoutii/HPIM0314.jpg?t=1257045004

do you feel comfortable shooting with the scope installed this close?

Thanks Dr.

Well, what do you mean by close? Too far back toward the shooter? Yeah, it is a little. Its just a temp set up untill I can set up something more permanant. I was just impatient and had to shoot the new gun[AR15]

Man, I know what you mean, I shot couple of my ARs with no sights at all, just 'cause they were "new" to me. :)

By all means enjoy it !!! Too many folks get caught up in the tactical/accessory mind set. Target looks good by the way. ENJOY !!

It has a lot less recoil than your rem. 700 though![Beer]

looking good, even those scope rings[ROFL2]

in time you will build yourself "your" ultimate gun. that is what I love about ARs. it isn't just a rifle any more, it instantly can be different and be "your gun"

You know, I think you're right. My 700 is chambered in .222, has a heavy 24" barrell, old school steel rings, and a Leupold fixed 12X scope. It weighs probably better than 12 lbs. I think the semi auto design of the AR dissapates a lot of the already light recoil of the .223.

Just like my 1917 Enfield in 30-06 kicks like a stinkin' mule (especially when shooting prone) compared to the M1 Garand. The Garand is quite mild in comparison.

I already have plans for a Varmint Rifle. I'm thinking 24" Bull barrell, free float hand guard, chambered in .204 Ruger.

Damn! I think I'm addicted!
