A 5-year-old Colorado girl is hospitalized in fair condition after she was attacked by a bear outside her home.
The attack happened early Sunday near Grand Junction, about 240 miles (386 kilometers) west of Denver.
The girl's mother told state wildlife officers that her daughter went outside around 2:30 a.m. to investigate noises she thought might be coming from her dog. The mother said she then heard screaming and went out to find her daughter being dragged by a large black bear. She says the bear dropped the girl after she began screaming at the animal.

Why is a five year old going outside at 2:30 unsupervised? One of the largest coyotes I have ever seen was in Rabbit Valley, about 40 miles west of there.

People are stupid.

Prayers for the girl for healing and for commonsense for her mom not to be letting her outside at 0230.....

Damn. I'm at our farm on East Orchard Mesa now and this attack happened exactly 3/4 mile north of me this morning. I can see their place from here. I don't know the folks but I doubt that little girl will be venturing out at night alone for a while. Bear sightings are uncommon here on EOM. My guess is that the bear came up on the mesa from the Colorado River which is only a few hundred yards away.

I happened to have lunch with all the area wildlife officers here yesterday....the bad bear season has begun.

Maybe everyone was asleep and the 5 year old got up on her own? Wouldn't be the first time, kids tend to do stuff like that.

I feel badly for the little girl. But I feel badly for the bear, too. The bear gets to die because it's a bear that made a bad choice or was startled or whatever. Or, the closest bear found will be killed and named the "likely" suspect. I wish we treated hard-core criminals like we treat wildlife that breaks the "rules".

My thought too.

Why is the dog left out at night? Easy meal for coyotes, bears, mt. lions...

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers killed a bear Sunday into Monday, it's the bear they believe is responsible for injuring a young girl in an early Sunday morning attack in East Orchard Mesa.

CPW officers will transport the bear to the agency's Wildlife Health Laboratory in Fort Collins for a full pathological examination. That examination will confirm if this is the bear responsible for the attack.

Wildlife officers placed three traps in the area overnight and watched them. When they saw the bear walking up to a house about a half-mile away from the location of the attack. Officers killed the bear before it entered the trap.

The agency said in a news release that based on the description of the bear and its behavior, wildlife officers are confident the dead bear is the same bear involved in the attack on the girl.

"The necropsy, along with DNA results will provide the confirmation, but we are confident we have the right bear," said Area Wildlife Manager Kirk Oldham. "However, we will leave all three traps in place for the time being out of an abundance of caution."

In addition to the traps, CPW officers and USDA Wildlife Services personnel will continue searching the area for any additional bears.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife advises the public to avoid attracting bears, and all wildlife, to their residences by removing attractants, including trash, bird feeders and other potential sources of food.
