I'm very strongly considering buying the LaRue Ultimate Upper kit. Has anyone else built one of these? If so, would you recommend getting the lower from LaRue as well, or would it work well with something like a spikes tactical lower?

Larue is far beyond the realm of Spikes. If you want to check out a complete Larue rifle, let me know. Otherwise, just get it.

Thanks, I may take you up on that. I don't have a problem buying the LaRue lower, I just love some of the spikes designs. If the LaRue is that much higher quality, I'll just stick with their lower.

Kinda feel that way about my Noveske 14.5 N4 Light Recce I picked up second hand before their prices got stupid.

All my SBR lowers are Seekins with varying uppers (DD, ACC and others) and fit well, but the Noveske factory rifle still has a better fit/finish than the others I built.

I bought one along with their lower for a 6.5 Grendel build. Larue is on par with DD and Noveske, but the ultimate upper build has some features that I'm not a fan of. The hand guard attaches to the upper using wings that extend out from the upper receiver and mate to similar wings on the hand guard. Functionally it works but is different.

The barrel is their Stealth barrel, which isn't bad but not as accurate as those they use on their complete rifles. Mine shot just inside of 1 MOA but my pTAR will shoot closer to 1/2 MOA. See their kits now come in 224 Valkyrie.

I would strongly recommend their upper kits. Good way to get in to a Larue at a good price.

Mark LArue is a bit of a peacock for sure, but his products are very well built, fit and finish is very high end. I have no complaints about my PredatAR and the Stealth upper I have is the most accurate of all my uppers. I'd get a Larue lower for sure, you can't buy it otherwise at this time.

Are the wings a potential weak point?

I don’t think so, just a different way for the hand guard to attach to the upper receiver. Instead of screwing on to a barrel nut or getting attached to the barrel nut, it just has tabs that extend out at the 3 and 9 o’clock position that mate to similar tabs on the upper receiver and screwed together.

Pics on Larue website show the ears or tabs on the upper receiver.

It seems very effective but not as streamlined as some.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkI've seen the pictures. As long as it isn't a weak spot, I think I'm ok with it. It will be my first AR, so honestly, I don't have a whole lot to compare it to.

You’ll be happy with it. Can’t beat the price compared to their complete rifles.

Thinking about another on in 224 Valkyrie.

He tends to say a lot of stuff he probably wishes he didn't over on arfcom. In addition He has had a sour relationship with sniper's hide. Hiring a publicist would be a great move for him, kind of like President Trump and twitter. His company makes very nice products, fit and finish is very high grade. Often referred to as a boutique AR manufacturer. He likes to tout his stuff a lot and let everybody know, but doesn't take criticism well, even if it is constructive.

The predatar method of attaching the forward handguard is about as bombproof as it gets with the attaching bolts and wings. Daniel Defense has a similar set up. Removes a lot of potential problems with a barrel nut style of mounting the handguard but it is proprietary so you are limited to LArue offerings (not a bad thing, would you really swap out the hand guard for another company?) Absolutely no chance of twisting the hand guard, very rigid, potentially less barrel deflection vs a barrel nut even though both systems are technically free-float
