The 4th American to walk on the moon passed two days ago. I missed the news. Alan Bean was 86 and he spent over 10 hours on the surface of the moon. The astronauts of his period were my heroes growing up in the 60s. Guys like him are hard to find.

In total, Bean logged 69 days, 15 hours and 45 minutes in space, including 31 hours and 31 minutes on the moon, his family said.

I thought his portrayal by Dave Foley in the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon was done pretty well. Apparently, Alan Bean was a bit of a character. The heroes of my youth are leaving us. Yet another reminder that I'm getting old. RIP Astronaut Bean.

He was also a helluva an artist and a genuinely nice guy. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and have collected his prints (so many I can't even put them all on the walls). The only paintings of lunar exploration from a guy who knew what it looked like from first-hand experience.
