View Full Version : Traffic Rant Denver is a one lane town

Stu_Padaso

[soap] Does anybody else notice that every major thoroughfare is down to one lane , and every alternate route is also down to one lane
there should be a law restricting the amount of one lane closers in a certian direction , Frustrating then again maybe im just a Stu padaso .

It's just getting too damn crowded.

We should have built a wall.

...and then had the neighboring states pay for it.

Well yeah, the roads don't exist so you can get from one place to another easily and efficiently.

The roads exist so you can be trapped on them, paying 22 cents per gallon to the state plus 18 cents per gallon to the feds in taxes, the longer you sit the more they can steal.

Which isn't great for "the environment". These bureaucrats apparently want to kill future generations. [Sarcasm2]

Denver has done a good job of turning real traffic lanes into bike lanes, on purpose, to make driving so painful people will take mass transit.

I know it’s a bitch thread but the logistics of massive revamping of insert the name of major transport routes due to massive a influx of humans is not a weeknight drawing on a cocktail napkin.
the state has been planning these various expansions since w’s first term easily. My favorite is i270 from 70 to 25 slated to remove clover leaf merge system mid 2025 at the earliest

I270 would be my favorite highway if it wasn't clogged all the time. I-225 is way better than it used to be for sure.

True, but thus far CDOT has done a truly terrible job of trying to keep up, to the point of saying that "denver traffic is no worse than other metropolitan areas, so we don't need to change anything"...

I won't expound on it any further, because I know we have guys on here that work for CDOT...

I thought that was their plan.

Added an extra lane on the north end of I25 where it’s always congested and made it a toll lane so nobody wants to pay and it’s just as congested as ever. Same on highway 36 going out to Boulder. Extra toll lane.

While there probably are too many vehicles on the roads if 95% of these idiots would learn to drive it might actually flow pretty decent even with the large volume of vehicles.

Agreed.

I would add that CO doesn't plan for the future though. They seem to plan for the "now", and by the time they're done with the project, it's already clogged up again. T-Rex for example. If you NEED and eight lane highway, then BUILD a twelve lane highway.....imo.

Same thing happened in Boston with their Big Dig. They designed it in the 70's and finished in the 2000's, it was out of date before they even started the construction.

That's easier said than done. There isn't even room for a 12 lane highway for most of I-25 where they need it.

Example: I was listening to a podcast of a guy talking about how smart mushrooms are, and he was saying that the people running the study built a scale model of Tokyo with nutrients at all the major areas. Then the mushroom grew to seek the nutrients in a way that was more efficient than the current traffic layout of Tokyo. Another study had little kids design some sort of traffic infrastructure and the design was touted as more efficient than what was currently in place. Big deal. Mushrooms and little kids don't have to navigate over a hundred years of the results of zoning laws and private property ownership.

When I was a teenager, the DOT spent a couple of years concreting I-25 from like highway 7 all the way to WY. They were already there doing stuff, 2 north and 2 south.

Retarded.

They had the room, the time and evidently the money to be there, and they blew it. Kinda my point, they should have at least done 3 each way back then.

If you dig deep enough along the CO traffic corridors, you'll find wagon tracks. They just kept making the same old tracks bigger over time. There's no efficiency given to any of it, just expediency (in government terms).

My 20 mile commute to work involves about 12 miles of dirt road, one stop sign and one light. Almost no traffic even during "rush hour". Low stress through better planning.

Correct.

OTOH I didn't expect the population in CO to explode over the last few years either.

ray1970
06-08-2018, 16:36
I’m typically getting paid while I’m commuting so that probably helps reduce my stress levels. It’s kind of like the worse traffic is the longer it takes me and the more money I make.

In Dallas, the toll roads now have toll lanes... (double tolls for Lexus lane on a toll road)

It isn't any better than Denver, and construction takes decades.

I'd say stop the toll road idea while you can.... but the realist in me says it's already been decided, so bohica

Denver traffic has increased over the 14 years we’ve been here. It still is pretty easy compared to the Boston-DC megalopolis or the total cluster that is LA. At least in Denver, Dallas, or Houston you can get off the highway and take surface roads or drive during the off-rush time.

Never understood why it is called “rush hour.” No one gets to go fast enough to appear like they are in a rush and most large cities have hours of traffic in the morning, afternoon, and evening. “Crawl hours” seems to be more appropriate.

I try to get a glimpse of I 25 before committing to entry. If I don’t enter or have to bail after entering, at least there are a half dozen parallel roads going in the general direction I am going.

Fortunately I have since moved to working an early day shift, therefore I leave my house at around 0400 and the traffic is minimal (aside from the morons doing 90+ mph on I-70). Of course, I remember a time when rush hour used to be just that. Now, you can't drive anywhere between 0800 - 1800 hours without this city being congested on the roadways. Denver had been growing vastly since I moved here in 1995, since the marijuana laws were passed people have flooded Denver and now the streets and highways can't keep up with the growth. Typical major metropolis, non-stop construction until the end of time. [Rant1]

Denver traffic was a whole lot nicer when there was only 1.5 million people living in the whole state...When I was traveling a bunch in the late 80s, I could count on getting from Lakewood to Stapleton International Airport in 25 minutes, day or night, arriving 30 minutes before my flight, and still having time to take a whiz before boarding the plane (with my pocket knife firmly in my pocket).[soap][blaster]

Stop complaining guys. Gov (well, the public-private [select Dim companies] partnership) is going to save us by making us pay tolls on the roads we've already paid to build on infrastructure many of us have been paying on for decades.

May 21, 2018 - Plenary Roads Denver requests transition to dynamic pricing to optimize travel times revenue for US 36 and I-25 Central Express Lanes

[snip]

As part of the request to move to dynamic pricing to respond to traffic conditions, PRD has asked the HPTE board to allow for the flexibility up to the current maximum rate for one way from Boulder to Denver, and from Denver to Boulder. The current maximum rates for ExpressToll account and pass users is $15.76 and $23.64 for License Plate Toll (LPT).

The only day I experience serious issues is on Wednesday morning when I have to be into work at 9:00am. I'm coming from Aurora and get onto I-70 from Peoria. At 8:00am it's practically a parking lot already. Absolutely stupid because people don't know how to merge and a lot of big rigs in the fast lane slowing things down too. The traffic was already undesirable in Denver, but generally in the middle of the day (prior to the mass influx of people moving here) you could still get around town without much issue. Now, between 7:30am - 7:00pm it's ridiculous on the major thoroughfares.
