View Full Version : Amazing things you've seen on nextdoor
Try to stay with me here. I have my son half time, he's with his mom every other week. My boy is autistic, has no concept of his own safety. Tonight he decided that he wanted to go to his mom's house. He just went out the front door and started walking. My wife and I obviously freaked out and started looking for him. She put a post on nextdoor and within 15 minutes we estimate there were 300-400 people looking for our boy. I was driving around looking for him and saw people everywhere with flashlights searching for my son. Everywhere I went there were people just looking for this boy. The police were awesome as well and between the community and them my kiddo was found in just over an hour. He actually made it pretty far before he was found but he made it home without a scratch. I've been pretty anti social media but in this case it was an amazing experience. Our community pretty much dropped whatever they were doing on a Saturday night and started looking for our son. It's really awesome to realize that beneath all our petty conflicts that everyone seems to have real priorities. I'm awestruck with the response that complete strangers helped my family in such an impactful way.

I'm certainly glad to hear that the community helped to find your son.
I'm glad he was he was alright!
Thank you. It was actually pretty horrifying. I really wish I could somehow personally thank everyone that helped out. I'm still processing how incredibly awesome the response was.
Glad to hear it. You can make a thank you post, then throw a thank you barbeque next weekend.

There's still some good in the world and sometimes it comes unexpectedly. I know all your friends here are pleased to know the outcome was well.

Block Party. You'd be surprised how many from the area would pitch in to make it happen. .
Rent one of those large grills, throw dogs and burgers on call it good.
I would also include when you decide to do it a notice for all To Leave Your Politics At Home. Just a Thank You to everyone.

Nextdoor can get pretty silly at times, but it's really very helpful when there are missing children or pets, or events that can be construed as dangerous to the community. I'm so glad he's okay!

This shows the original intent of Nextdoor.
The circumstance captured the great people of the neighborhood who all wanted to help.
That is the "silent majority" that still exists.
A simple thank you is more than they expect and a BBQ would be a treat.
I'm glad everything worked out.
I'm happy to see something good come of ND.
I often wonder if neighbors need actual help (and I can help) and it gets drowned out in all the noise.
I'm not actually on there. I'll probably open an account after this though even though something like what just happened is probably pretty rare.

I recommend you use the initial of your last name.
The majority of people are good. Good people far outnumber the evil people. I am happy for you and your son. I hope you actually met a few nice people face to face. On-line is an introduction to relationship for many people today. I wish you success in finding ways to convey personal safety to your son. If it takes you a thousand tries to keep him safe it will be only a little effort compared to the goal.
Be safe.

The nice thing is that ND allows you to "mute" the people that tend to make trouble, insult, or further obstruct the spirit of the site.
My wife is on there which is all the access I need, going to skip out on creating an account.
I'm happy that your kiddo was found.
I tried ND, but couldn't stand the low signal to noise ratio. I wouldn't have been the least bit surprised if people spent more time attacking your parenting abilities than actually trying to find your child.
