View Full Version : Looking for a hammered DA 9mm compact pistol - overwhelmed.

I'm looking to replace my PPQ AIWB EDC pistol with something with a hammer. I'm fine with that size (about a glock 19). It needs a decocker so I can carry it in DA mode and be a 9mm and hold about 15 rounds.

I was about to pull the trigger on a P-07 or a P-01 Omega and then I started thinking "If I'm about to spend $600 right now, what could I get for about $1,000?" Buy once cry once and all that.

So I started looking at the Sphinx SDP, the Sig 229, a CZ Compact Shadow Line.
Between those there is also the Beretta PX4 Storm and an HK or two.

What else would you add at that about $1K price cap, and what would your choice be, and why?

Yeah...I know I'm way overthinking it. I just don't make these decisions quickly.

I’ve got the P-07 with all the Cajun Gunworks stuff in it and the internals have been polished. It’s a great fun for SD and can be bought for sub $450. The Sphinx is a carbon copy of the CZ but with better machining, a billet receiver and twice the price. Still needs upgrades that the CZ needs. P-01 is very nice and I’d like one some day. I work near I-25/I-70 you’re more than welcome to handle my P-07. So many choices that I’d stick to a budget and not over spend based in price IMO.

A CZ is next on my list for sure. Every one I have held, I have loved. Never shot but from what I hear, I will not be disappointed.

If you can deal with the size and weight you really can’t go wrong with any of the CZ compacts or a Sig 228/229.

My preference would probably be for the CZ PCR.

Don't forget about the Walther P99AS. It functions essentially the same as a hammer gun, with a de-cocker to provide a full weight and stroke DA trigger. It's the only polystriker I own and uses 15 rd mags.

That is a good suggestion. I actually have one of those and got it for the trigger specifically. I'll probably have to sell it to pay off this one. However, I do want a hammered pistol. Saw a MAC video where he made a good point that really resonated with me. The biggest danger in appendix carry besides your finger being at the wrong place, is something getting into the holster when re-holstering that can press on the trigger - a bit of shirt caught up, or somehting loose. If you flag your thumb on the end of the slide when reholstering (which I do already) if there is something beginning to press on the trigger, you will feel movement on the hammer. That's a bit of extra security I have decided I would like.

Luckily (or unluckily) I am fat enough that my holster doesn't point at bits of me right now. But I'm hoping that will change eventually since that is much more likely to kill me than an AD into my femoral.

If weight is not a big issue, what about CZ-75/Jericho 941/Baby Desert Eagle? Basically all the same gun, with a decent DA pull and stellar SA trigger. Ergos are better for those of us with stubby little sausages for fingers than most of the SIGs I've had the opportunity to handle.

Full size CZ-75 is difficult to properly manipulate compared to other guns, in my experience. Ergos are great, but I can't imagine sausage fingers having any easy time operating the controls.

I have the CZ SP-01 Tactical and it's a great gun, but I don't know if I'd want to carry that brick in my pants all day. I've got enough weight swinging around down there as it is.

I do want a compact sized frame still.

FNX-9? May be too big for your requirements, but seems to meet the others...?

Nice one. I missed that one somehow. Almost the identical size as my PPQ and a few ounces lighter. Will have to check one out in person.

If you can swing it, the Sphinx is probably the nicest of the bunch. Although there's nothing wrong with a CZ P01 or PCR.

I have been carrying a P229 for over 15 years. Solid handgun with a proven track record being carried by government funded shooters. If you can find a trade-in they are well worth the price. Otherwise I prefer to carry something that I can easily replace with personal funds if it ever went into an evidence locker.

Another vote for the P229, CZ makes a very fine pistol too. Which one fits your hand better?

What about the Sig 2022? Is that a no go? Is it less than just a polymer framed 229?

Also - the classic carry legacy 229? Just no rail? Or different in other ways from a standard 229?

I've not shot the other brands people mention, but love the P model sigs. Carried one for many years, 1000's of round without a glitch. P228/P229.

Best of luck with the decision.

Sig 2022 is a terrific gun, about the same size as a P226, inexpensive too.

Why not consider the P229 in 40S&W? The P229 was designed around the .357SIG/40S&W cartridge from the ground up.

I'm a huge 9mm fan myself but ended up with a P229R in 40S&W and it's easily one of the most accurate compacts I have. That and the fact that you can find police trade in's for +/-$450 is a huge plus...

How about going old school and getting a single stack S&W? Could probably get 3 of them for under $1k.

Erni,

I've already got a PPS M2 for when I have to go really small (and an LCP II for when I have to go stupid small - something I don't need to do anymore now that I've discovered the Crossbreed I.C.E. belly band holster combo). I'm looking for a standard compact in the 15 round range for my normal carry gun.

It's a decent suggestion. Just a couple of knocks for me personally: I just don't think I want to introduce another caliber. Carry ammo is the same expensive no matter what caliber, but practice ammo is a different story. Also, not sure I want a well used (possibly) handgun for my EDC.

The P229 in 9mm is 15 rounds. One of the things I've done for all of my Glocks is also possible with the P229, and that is starting with a reasonably priced .40 S&W then adding a .357 SIG barrel and a 9mm conversion barrel from Bar-Sto https://www.barsto.com

I find a recoil spring that will work for all three calibers (the .357 SIG recoil springs usually work well) and when I travel I throw the other two barrels and a few 9mm magazines in my bag along with the .40/.357 SIG mags I normally carry. I never worry about finding ammunition anywhere in the USA.

Not yet, but I’m planning on doing so next week. I have ruled out the CZ options because I appendix carry and I’m very fat and those beaver tails would be too painful.

Current front runners are the PX4 compact carry and the P229 classic carry.

The HK usp compact is also another option for you. It only holds 13rds and not 15rds not sure if that is a deal breaker for you. Wife has been real happy with her's over the last 10 years. Only thing is holsters are not a easy to find, but there are plenty of people making them.

Those are nice guns, i had a HK UPSc in 357 Sig, sweet pistol.

I used to have a USP 45. I have now added the P2000 to the PX4 and P229. Those are my finalists.

I'm going to go shoot the PX4 and the P229 next trip to Bluecore and then make my final decision.

I have personally seen a px4 jam up because of pocket lint getting stuck in the channel where the barrel rides. I liked the gun and the old cougar's but seems that rotating barrel can have issues.

Good feedback. Saw that happen with dirt during a torture test too. Completely seized the gun until it was washed out. Helps narrow the list down. Looks like I just am going to own German and Czech firearms after all.

Decision made and order placed - for better or worse. Till trading post we part.

HK P2000 with the LEM trigger - LE model with night sights and 3 mags.

I decided to run it with a Streamlight TLR-7 and ordered one too.

I had been using the TLR-1 HL with the PPQ and I loved everything about it other than how sensitive the paddles were. I also liked giving up half the size and still having 500 lumens.

Also ordered a new Tier1 Axis Slim for the combo.

Pretty happy getting almost everything in a handgun I was looking for at a pretty reasonable price.
