You can't believe everything you read, especially if it's scrawled across a restaurant receipt.
A waiter at a Saltgrass Steak House in Odessa, Texas, confirmed Monday that he made up a story about one of the restaurant’s patrons leaving him a “racist” receipt.
"I did write it," Khalil Cavil, 20, told the of the note on the receipt, which read “We don’t tip terrorist.”
“I don’t have an explanation," Cavil said. "I made a mistake. There is no excuse for what I did.”
Cavil originally shared a photo of the receipt to Facebook earlier this month, claiming that a customer wrote the message and refused to leave a gratuity. He further claimed that the patron circled his first name — Khalil — which had been printed at the top of the receipt.
“At the moment I didn’t know what to think nor what to say, I was sick to my stomach,” the 20-year-old in the now-deleted Facebook post, explaining that he shared the post to start a discussion about the racism and hatred that “still exists” in the country.
But Cavil isn't the first waiter to fake a handwritten message to get some Facebook love.
Dayna Morales, a server at a New Jersey restaurant and a former Marine, after alleging that a customer wrote, “Sorry, I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and the way you live your life” on a receipt, and posted a photo of said receipt on her Facebook page.
The couple who dined at the restaurant that evening later came forward to deny the allegations, and provided their own copy of the receipt and credit card statement to , which reportedly showed that they had indeed left a tip.
The restaurant where Morales worked, Gallop Asian Bistro, later announced on Facebook that she was at the restaurant.
A different waitress named Toni Jenkins, who worked at a Red Lobster in Tennessee, was also after she accused him of calling her the N-word on a receipt in 2013, the reported. She had also shared a photo of the alleged message — along with his name visible at the top of the receipt — online.
"It's been horrific. I mean, I just have been getting all these threats and everything," said Devin Barnes, the customer who was accused of writing the message, told at the time.
Barnes did not deny leaving Jenkins no tip, but claimed he did not write the offensive message. A handwriting expert working for Barnes also allegedly provided evidence that neither he, nor his wife, had written the message. Red Lobster was not immediately available to discuss the outcome of the case.
But the Saltgrass Steak House, which had initially defended Cavil and banned the patron from returning to the restaurant, had to apologize and offer the wronged customer a free meal.
“After further investigation, we have learned that our employee fabricated the entire story,” Saltgrass Steak House COO Terry Turney said Monday, in a statement to the Odessa American. “The customer has been contacted and invited back to our restaurant to dine on us.”
Cavil also offered to return tip money that was sent to him by sympathetic Facebook users, who offered up the cash in lieu of the tip he claimed he didn’t receive.
“I’m sorry. I deeply made a huge, big mistake," Cavil told the Odessa American. "And I’m in the process of getting the help that I need.”
Making it difficult to believe when this really does happen.
I read a different article about this today. Neither mentioned if he still worked there. I can't imagine he wouldn't be fired. I'd fire him without making a big deal about it. It's not like serving is a difficult job to come across.
Basically this guy is done with being employed for years to come. He probably lost lots of friends by this stupidity.
Same goes with idiots who yells "Obama!" or "Trump!" and being full potato.
Luckly we haven't yet to see someone yells "Cheney!" and shoot someone's face with shotgun.

Counseling (and by whom, for what), rehab center (what type), a good thumping?

The problem with racism (only white people can be racist) in America is that there is so little of it, it has to be manufactured.
Most of us don't and couldn't get away with a bit of it! Even if racist to the core, could you imagine being "outed" for leaving a comment like that? You or I would lose everything. Every Google search on our names would lead right back to the FB post or the tweets, forever.

Ah, but that incident just demonstrated the total ignorance in the media and now in the education system. Quayle DIDN'T misspell but he DID get called on it. "P-o-t-a-t-o-e" is and has been and acceptable spelling, particularly in his area of the country. What Quayle got wrong was in "correcting" the student who spelled it the more common way, "p-o-t-a-t-o". The mass media -- like you -- jumped on him for misspelling the word and laughing about his ignorance while displaying their own ignorance.

Just out of curiosity, what is black and what law enforces the use of the description when identifying one's self?
I understand and have often used the description when providing or relaying the description of someone involved in an incident but it has ceased to be a meaningful legal description since there is no accepted genetic or biological characteristic that can actually be forced on someone who chooses not to accept it. For decades now, I have used "U" for race when running criminal records. I can't recall when the last time I heard the term octoroon used but I'm certain it was used to point out the absurdity of proving someone's degree of blackness.
The last group of people in the U.S. as far as I am aware of that utilize blood purity as a racial qualification are native Americans who determine tribal acceptance through the percentage of proven genealogical criteria.
IMO the best legal description, and the one I tend to use most when asked to identify racial origin is "other." After all, I have high cheek bones and I know better than believing all of the stories my family tells about different ancestors and who they may or may not have lain with.

I believe there was a HuffPo story on how Klansmen were enslaving small children of color to hand sew each and every one of those MAGA hats. Upon completion, a Grand Wizard imbues the hats with evil magic causing the wearers to attack people who are a racial and religious minority.
I usually leave my second receipt on the table. I can't believe the one family kept their original receipt to show that they did leave a tip. Also, even if they didn't, the second receipt is blank. They must have pulled the bank records showing that they spent X% over the total amount.

I always take EVERY receipt they provide to me except the "Merchant Copy". I won't leave anything behind that I don't have to that might give someone ANY information about me. Identity theft/home burglars, etc. are getting craftier and I'm going to do everything reasonable to make their efforts fruitless.
Additionally, I write in the amount I leave for a tip on MY copy of the receipt along with the total amount to use to check against my bank statement later. Any variances & I'll contest it.
Do you use CamScan or something to eliminate all the paper?
