My wife and I have 4 children, in about 10 hours we will be leaving to take our oldest off to college, I don’t really think it hit me till now - it is definitely bittersweet :(

Where are they going?

We have a HS senior and a junior . . . so this will be happening for us very soon.

Bailey will be attending the University of Notre Dame near South Bend Indiana , I think because it’s so far away it makes it harder....

Awesome! Notes Dame is an amazing school, world class campus and home of the greatest football team in the world.
I’m biased!

It’s a feat just to get accepted!

Nice . . . my nephew graduated from there a couple years ago. He loved it. Good luck to the kid!

Those tuition bills will sting a bit, unless there's a sports scholarship involved. My son is eyeballing DU as his goal . . . I better get a few more jobs.

Sniper7 - did you go there?
Ramsker- believe it or not, but because she had the credentials to get in and she is going into engineering program the school gave her a lot of money to attend . It is going to cost us less to send her there then a Colorado state school .
I still wish she would be closer to home though

Dropping mine off today, bitter sweet. I have to make sure my wife does not hide in the closet and is fact in the car on the drive back.

Congrats Snowman! It's hard but will get easier. Hard on him too.

Cheaper to send kids out of state. Colorado ranks 47th in funding for colleges. Spoke to a financial aide suit from CSU about cost and lack of scholarships. He was very defensive. Told me “CSU is a business. Why would we give your child a free education when we can charge a student from Kalifornia $40k a year or a student from Saudi Arabia $60k? Asshole. Noticed he drove a BMW too so business must be real good. High taxes, booming economy, and weed everywhere. Not sure what our Legislature and Governor spend the $ on. Sure as hell not going to road maintenance and tuition. Maybe it goes towards the super successful powerhouse football team we have up here at CSU?

Yup. Things to remember when they ask for taxpayers to relieve students of their debt.

You’re looking at this from the wrong angle. I darn near threw a party when the kids left.

One of them was forced to move back in (with his wife) about a year ago and looks like they’ll be moving to Wyoming soon.

Think maybe I will throw a party this time.

Congratulations to her.

Thanks for all the kind words!
We are in Des Moines IA now - 660 miles and it took 12 hours- I am driving with my wife, oldest daughter and my 8 year old daughter and they all want to stop all the dam time.
Ray - I still have 3 at home and she was a good babysitter and driver- lol.

12 hours to Des Moines is a bit rough. Good luck for the rest of the trip.

Notre Dame fact I learned just a few minutes ago while perusing the interwebz:

In 1924, the KKK decided to have a rally, parade, and picnic in South Bend. 500 Fightin' Irish promptly ran into town and beat the crap out of them. LOL.

That right there was 50% of the deciding factor to learn a skilled trade for me. But I had a lot of friend pay that much for CSU and could get a job afterwords.

Luckily I have 12 more years untill I have to deal with this. Dropping him off for first grade on Tuesday. Already telling him he needs scholarships or to join the navy.

My oldest in a junior in college and my youngest is a senior in HS.

On the subject of in-state vs out-of-state, my son was offered $5k academic scholarship from several Colorado schools, University of Utah offered him a full tuition academic scholarship. Guess where he is going?

Mine had his first day of High School today. So just the cost of food, an Xbox card and a flannel shirt once in awhile and he is happy.

I just saw the in-state tuition for Colorado School of Mine Control, and it was very very expensive. I think it is 3x more than what it was when i was about to apply.

One of my former co-worker went to school in Lafayette Indiana, and he said he was paying ~$900/semester. [Hyper]

BTW, under or grad, I cannot stand quarter based schools. 1/2 of the school year, I would need to worry about registering for next quarter. I will recommend my kid a semester based school when she is about to go start her undergrad.

Who is still doing that?
UMinnesota was on that system when I considered it, but I believe they’ve changed.

Well we made it, holly shit is it hard traveling with 3 women. But everything went good and starting tomorrow we will have 2 busy days fri and sat. Sunday we have breakfast then a 2 hour formal Catholic mass, lunch and then we leave her and head home- I am sure my wife will be a fucking mess....
The all in Notre Dame tuition for freshman is 68k to 72k depending on the major, books and meal plan.
After her scholarships Our total bill was about 14k and she is paying half of that so $3,500 a semester is our cost - I cannot send her to any state schools for that.

Sounds like a great deal! Have any podcasts or audio books for your wife to constantly interrupt with worries about your kid on the way back? Might help the time pass.

Snowman78
08-16-2018, 18:21
Yes, I have a list of podcasts and she has a bunch of ted talks!

Well we made it, we are back home after 2200 plus miles.
My wife did pretty good but my 8 year old daughter cried for about 2 hours straight.
The school did a really nice welcome weekend and we felt that she is in a good safe place.
