View Full Version : Ozone generator for vehicle odors?
Has anybody here ever used an ozone generator to de-stink a vehicle? Like, cigar smoke smell in a pickup? Just wondering how well it works.
I used to work for Ralph schomp Chevy in Brighton and we had a manager that was horrible at smoking in all the vehicles he would drive for 4-6k miles then the dealership would sell them as new/used.
We would use the ozone generator for a couple days in those vehicles and it would wipe out pretty much any smell effectively.
Also used it on a dodge Cummins extended cab the guy had a Newfoundland or some huge type dog that pretty much lived in the truck. The original seats were nice once you got through no joke 4” of dog hair that had been matter down over the years. It ended up smelling nice as well.
Do they cost a lot to rent?
No idea, the dealership bought one
Looked at them on eBay, seems they run from $69.95 to about $275 and up. But the $70 one looks real attractive for personal use. Thinking I might just get one, but wanna hear experiences first.
Heavy concentrations of ozone will melt plastics. Use in moderation with a window cracked. It does work but you need to run the fan as a lot of the smell gets trapped in the dust inside the hvac system

No experience with autos, but when I did maintenance for hotels we would use them in rooms people smoked in and brought there pets. For the most part it would get rid of the smells.
Sounds like something everyone should have.
They work. Have used them in vehicles several times. We had a $900 commercial one at work and used it to destench cars and rooms from fires and corpses. We had a fire in a Winchell's on Federal and some bright bulb opened the refer...out rolled gallons of brown sludge that would make a skunk wince. Cleaning crew removed that in Class A and set the Ozinator in there. 3 days later, no smell.
Buddy bought one for his hockey gear bag. Worked great for him.
Flow is important if there are a lot of polymers around. And don't breath in Ozone!
Had a room in Vegas that was supposedly non smoking but smelt like cigarettes. Hotel used an ozone generator that did remove the tobacco smell, but left an even worse ozone scent that eventually led to us changing rooms. To be honest, the ozone smell was worse than the smoke.
I bought a used commercial one when I bought my house. It was a foreclosure and beyond stinky. Cheap ones weren't really around back then. Worked fantastic. I've used it a ton, even on a stinky car I bought. As said above, concentrated ozone can ruin things, and some people are sensitive to ozone. If you have one you'll likely use it more than once. And people will want to borrow it too.

Used at dealerships for years, they work great in most circumstances. Every once in a while one would have some residual. Make sure you run both the heat, vent and AC while you are doing in. The smoke smell hides in the ductwork and you'll think its gone and then you turn on the AC and bam.
I own a commercial unit that I use in my cigar room. Works well. You're welcome to borrow it, but we're not too close to each other.
Anyone post some experiences with how to use whole house or room by room only.
We have indoor dogs and other pets, and while we don't have accidents happen, still is like faintly musty.

Would also like the procedure for vehicles if anyone cares to share, as well as a recommendation on a decent unit.

Interesting to hear about the plastics!!! I'm the kind of idiot that would put it in my truck and let it run overnight.
Here's a cleaning tip for the yellow nicotine stains left behind on surfaces- it works for walls in homes, and I would expect that it would also work for vehicle interiors (to a certain extent): LA Awesome, sold at the dollar store effectively removes the build-up. I use it in my carpet cleaner, and it helps remove stains and general grunge. You must dilute it, and don't use it on glass- ammonia and soapy water will work for glass- but it's an excellent cleaner.

We'd leave them in cars for entire days, sometimes overnight depending on the size of car and smell. Never saw an issue.

It really depends on the output of the machine vs the space. Some of the commercial units can turn the air toxic in an apartment overnight.
The 350$ a bit more than Id want to spend, the $100 going to crap after one use, or probably fine but only good for a car or a single room at a time I imagine. Room by room is fine though if I can rent a big one I thought about spending 2 days with pets (parrot very sensitive to airborne) elsewhere while a big unit does its thing.
Yeah, I'm only interested in vehicle use. My wife and I are both smokers. Ability to de-stink them once in awhile would be nice.
With 3 dogs in the house, we'd need a machine the size of a Volkswagon.

This is the unit I got. It successfully nuked the gas smell out of our toy hauler when a gallon of gas spilled on the floor.
Also worked for a smelly room in the house where the old beagle peed.
