View Full Version : My 10/22 feels a bit "bindy"

Brief history, I got the gun a few years ago from whatever sporting goods store was going out of business. It was completely stock and I put maybe 50 rounds through it.

I recently switched to a Blackhawk Axiom stock and TacSol light, threaded bull barrel. I changed everything over in the middle of the night and in a bit of hurry. After switching everything over, I noticed that when I pulled the bolt back, it felt like it was binding up around half-way back.

When I had the time (tonight) I tore everything down (did not remove barrel) and cleaned and lubed everything. It still feels about the same, if not a bit better. Seems like if I rack the action like I mean it, it's pretty smooth. If I try to go slow, it feels like it binds a bit at the half way mark.

It does feed and eject just fine when manually operated, but I've yet to shoot it with the new barrel and stock. I do not remember ever operating the action from when I first got the gun, so I'm not sure if this is normal. It honestly kind of feels like it binds less if I grab the outside of the bolt release, as opposed to getting my finger as close to the receiver as I can. Any ideas?

Take the trigger group out and reassemble. If it doesn't seem bindy anymore, it was just the bolt dragging on the hammer.

If it still feels bindy, take the recoil spring guide rod out and make sure it isn't bent.

What Hoser said...

The hammer dragging makes all of mine feel like that.

A side note:

Since you have a barrel and stock sitting there.

I took everything apart (mostly because all the pins fell out), except for the trigger group. Does taking it apart and putting it back together adjust how the hammer fits?

The bolt dragging on the hammer makes a lot of sense. Thanks guys.

Anyone completed an 80% receiver? Still need a mill, or just a drill press?

Just read the whole page, looks like a jig is all you need to finish an 80%. Thanks for the heads up.

Irv, I have a complete TacSol 10/22 if you ever wanna shoot her, etc. to get a good feel.

Thanks Bear. Checking it out again, I can definitely see where it could be the bolt dragging on the hammer. I'm just not sure if that is normal. My neighbor has the same gun. I'm going to check his out.

Yep. I've built two of the ones I linked.

With the two jigs, barrel hole and side hole, it's pretty straight forward. I did one on my porter cable drill press, and one barrel hole with a grizzly mill. Both came out just fine.

Just as good as my factory 10-22, or better, and it was a fun project.

Checked my neighbor's 10/22 tonight and the action feels exactly like mine does. Thanks for the help everyone.
