View Full Version : Carbon ring cleaning
RimfireCentral had a post about using GOOF OFF cleaning fluid to clean the carbon build up on 22LR chambers.
This might be a good way to clean suppressor baffles. Worth while testing on a AR pattern rifle gas system if you went squeaky clean.
I've been using CLR. It works great, too.

There is a spray cleaner called "Spray Nine', it is an industrial strength 409 type cleaner. It cuts carbon like nothing I have ever seen before. It is a caustic cleaner so due care needs to be used on aluminum and such but it works well. Spray it on, let it sit a few minutes, give it a scrub with a brush, repeat as required and rinse off with water.
Get the "Marine" cleaner..

I wouldn't worry too much about a "carbon ring" on 22lr. You would need a borescope to even know if it exists. Hard carbon rings effect high pressure cartridges (6mm) more that others. Once you have a carbon ring, you really need to scrub it out. I have never found anything that will simply dissolve it. JB bore paste works. Chrome-lined AR barrels will not carbon up like a stainless either. CLR will work, but will also eat steel if left too long.
For 22lr, I use BoreTech Rimfire Blend. It works well and gets lead fouling out. Lead can be more prominent in 22lr than copper or carbon in 22lr.
I've been reading a lot about using solvents with ultrasonic cleaners for gun parts (bolts, baffles, etc).... anyone have any real time info on that? Seems like a no brainer to me, but I don't know enough about it yet to form an opinion. It works great on my trumpets though...
BigBear, I’m unsure about others, but I’ve had good success with SimpleGreen dilutions in the ultrasonic.
