Overall "gun violence" is down in the US. It remains high and increasing where there is gun control.
If the Left really cared about minorities (of all kinds) gun rights would be a bipartisan issue uniting against gun control.

I think gun control is a distantly removed issue for most democrats (and probably a lot of conservatives). Of the liberals I know, socialized medicine is top, hatred of Trump is next (Get Him!), then probably pay equity and/or making college "free" and forgiveness of student loans. Very few own firearms, or know people who do, with me being the exception, and it's out of sight, out of mind.
I believe this is a case of them doing what the party says to do. Scary none the less.
And the (D) that say they don't want gun control vote for candidates that push for gun control.

Well, I'd have to disagree. At least in the sense that it's been this way for as long as most of us have been alive.
From the 1968 Democratic Party Platform:
THE NATION: The federal government has come swiftly to the aid of cities needing help to bring major disturbances under control, and Democratic leadership secured the enactment of a new gun control law as a step toward putting the weapons of wanton violence beyond the reach of criminal and irresponsible hands.
JUSTICE and LAW: Promote the passage and enforcement of effective federal, state and local gun control legislation.
And, of course, the democrats have a very racist history of denying blacks the right to own/carry guns since shortly after the Civil War. Even when the letter of the law prevented blacks/whites from certain activities in regards to guns the actual enforcement of the law was a different story.

The OP makes a distinction between the elites and the base for this very reason. Of course the elites have always wanted a disarmed public to use violence (threat of violence) against us! That is the very nature of collectivism.
It's the changing opinion of the base that is significant.

I'll concede that hard-core support for more gun control may be cyclical depending on the mood of the country. And obviously not all Democrats are in favor of it at any given time. But I'd guess the majority of Democrat voters are generally for some sort of gun control every election cycle.
Even those that aren't vote for it when they vote for Democrats. Doesn't matter how awesome a candidate is...if s/he is a Democrat, and you vote for them, you're voting for the party platform. And that includes gun control.
