View Full Version : Car insurance companies, I need a new one.

Do you guys have any suggestions on a new car insurance company. I've been with progressive for over 10 years, but this most recent policy renewal is ridiculous. This past may I renewed with my wife and 2 cars for $960, which includes the pay in full discount. Since then I've sold my car, so we're down to 1 car, and the renewal is $860 with the pay in full discount. Only $100 less for only 1 car?!

Currently I'm just getting online quotes from different companies, but does anyone suggest one company over another. Liberty Mutual seems to have decent rate for me, just under $700 for the same coverages; does anyone have experience with Liberty and their customer service?

Thanks.

My family and I have always had State Farm with no real complaints. Rates are decent, coverage is good and whenever we have made claim, it has been hassle free. I almost lost my license a few times when I was younger and they never dropped my ass either FWIW.

My father was a Farmers Insurance group agent and i have stayed or come back them after trying some others. When a claim is made, no problems. Also, after the 2012 wildfire here a number of companies wouldn't write house policies in my area. Farmers did. I keep both the house and cars with farmers.

Extremely similar situation.
I was with progressive. Progressive was originally cheaper, but they creep up the prem every renewal. I always had to pay lumpsum for full discount at Progressive. It was still higher than Statefarm with same everything coverage. I pay monthly now with state farm, and I don't have to pay stupid ~1900 per 6 month lumpsum.

We had a large hike from Geico, no accidents, no claims, nothing. I blame it on all the hail storm claims. We switched to Progressive and saved quite a bit. Similar hike from State farm the year before (after being with them for 17 years).

Suprisingly my commercial accounts haven't changed much in the last 10 years. I make it a point to revisit my coverage too.

My rates just went up because I had a ?comprehensive claim exceeding $1000?. Not sure if I should be angry with my insurance company or God since my claim was hail related. Guess the insurance assholes figured even though I was at zero fault for that claim that I should still have to pay for it. Cork soakers.

I will second State Farm. Especially if you need an accident repair.

Kent Holliway... Holliway Ins Agency in Arvada (old Town) 303-421-3046. Has me with SAFECO...great company...no issues. Has a friend with Nationwide (they were cheaper for them).

Liberty Mutual owns Safeco.

Auto Owners is the only company I know locally that doesn't have their regional office in the Tech Center. Last I knew they were up in Westminster.

Neither of those mean anything, just trivia.

APC headquarters is in the Tech Center, yep.

When we lived in Colorado Country Financial had far and away the best rates we could get for not only car insurance, but homeowners as well. For some reason auto is sky high thru them here. We're with GEICO now...can't find anyone that can beat their rates. I thought USAA might be competitive...not even close. They were good on the homeowners policy our first year here but wanted us to do some ridiculous fire mitigation based off of satellite photos.

So we went with a local insurance broker that got us a good homeowners policy. But still nothing that beats GEICO for auto.

Here's what I say every year this topic comes up. Insurance companies decide that they want to corner a market, so they lower their price and gather up policies. Then something happens (new CEO, promotions, huge hail storm, whatever) and they change direction and decide they don't like the profit margins in that market anymore (especially if they got a lot of new customers, who then all filed claims), so they raise rates and drop rates in another market and shuffle up their policies. No reason to stay loyal to a company in my opinion. That doesn't mean getting a high risk company like The General or Fred Loya, but there is zero reason to not shop around.

ALL insurance companies use depreciation. You mean companies that don't sell Replacement Cost Value for roofs so they ONLY sell ACV policies. Anyway, we're getting off topic.

I had Progressive for 12 years and then Flo got greedy. Switched home and auto to Allstate and saved over half from Farmers + Progressive (with the same or higher coverage + $1M umbrella).

Regional office, not agents.

I use Esurance, has always been cheaper than anyone else. Had to file a hail damage claim some years back and seemed like an easier process than I thought it would be

Regional office, not agents.

Of course. At some point it was important to me that they bucked the trend and didn't move down there. I think at the time I was pissed that Greenwood Village had a head tax.

I'm pretty happy with AllState. They've treated me well, unlike The Hartford and Progressive, whom I've had previously.

Been with State Farm since 03. Multiple cars, home, life. They paid out a few hail claims but the real test came two weeks ago when I was clobbered on the freeway. They have been nothing but awesome. Paid a fair value to total out my truck and are set on making me while. The injury attorney I hired told me right out of the gate SF is his recommendation to anyone who asks.

I dumped Allstate years ago. They were happy to insure my house and cars but refused to cover my motorcycles so I took my businesses elsewhere.

Funny you're trying to find something other than Progressive because we just switched our auto & home policies to them.

We had Farmer's for 15+ years and after adding a couple of new cars we were told they wouldn't insure them. Uhhh... wut? So, after years of loyalty we were forced to do some shopping. I'm actually glad it happened though because after a little bit of effort we saved quite a bit of money even with the new cars added. We went from two vehicles and a home to four vehicles (two of which were allegedly uninsurable by Farmer's) and our home for about the same money for much better coverages across the board.

Once we sell a couple of cars we'll be much lower on premiums. 2nd runner-up for us was USAA who had reasonable rates and I think Geico was a close 3rd. The rest weren't even close. For us Progressive was cheapest by a drastic margin so I'm surprised to hear that your rates have gotten crazy.

tl;dr check out USAA and it might be worth a call to someone @ Progressive with what you find from other carriers as they may have something different available that they're motivated to offer you once they hear they might lose you.

I wish I was eligible for USAA. If I was, that is where I would be.

Realize that a LOT of things factor into premiums. Education, credit rating, zip code, umbrella or not, etc. One company might be the best rate for someone and not for another. Rates in CO are going up faster than other states. Hail is not the reason as that has been a common theme in CO pretty much forever.

Service is a factor as well. Some companies will drop you with one claim, others won't. Some will take a partial settlement on an MVA, assigning some fault to their own insured to avoid costs, others won't. I have been with Farmers for a long time, on my 3rd agent. I could pay a little less with a few other companies, but I would not be comfortable with their claims and service.

We also were with Farmers through multiple agents and really liked our current agent. We do Crossfit with him in fact so we see him almost daily. This made it difficult but, in our case, it came down to not just paying a little bit more but paying a lot more to have him as our agent. We appreciated the personal attention he gave us but whenever we had a claim situation or policy change we ended up dealing with someone either at an 800 # or one of his assistants for the lion's share of the process anyway so what's the point of paying more for a local agent? I get they do some stuff but if the point to having an agent is to help you when you need them and they pass you off to people you've never met once you need them... I don't understand what's actually being paid for. In some ways I feel like we're paying a premium to have a face & a name to give us the 800 # so we don't have to look it up ourselves when we need something. Most of the time when we had policy changes or questions we worked with his assistant anyway and this person seemed to change each time we needed something adjusted or had a question so it's not like we really knew the person we were dealing with in those instances either. I don't know who our agent is w/Progressive and I don't much care. I just know it's a lot less money, more coverage and if we need to file a claim, have adjustments or questions we'll be talking with someone we've never met which was what we were basically getting with Farmers too... we're just not paying more for that privilege now. I know not everyone's experience will be the same but so far we're happy. That may change if we need to file a claim but instances where someone else hit me and we had to deal with their insurance I actually recall Progressive being very friendly & helpful to us as non-customers through the process.

Digging this thread up again since Allstate has been progressively increasing our rates. We're shopping around and used gabi.com (https://gabi.com/nT46A) to compare rates. Moving the home and 2 vehicles over to Safeco will save us almost $2k/yr.

Any updates as to issues with Safeco?

Update after ~2.5yrs with state farm.
No crazy stupid premium increase so far.
1 stupid ticket (reason why I have a dash cam now). No accident. No claim comp so far.
