Hey, folks. I live in Colorado Springs. Any suggestions to where one could go within 1 - 1.5 hours of the Springs? Thanks! Prefer not jacks as I heard the meat is gnarly.

Keep your ammo dry and let's hold fast for a wild November 6th.

God Bless,

Bunnies are easy and plentiful around Colorado Springs. Just east of Fountain is Turkey Tracks wildlife area. Hunt at dawn or dusk when they move around. Hunting any other time of day any you will probably see none. On cold days in the mountains they are active just until the sun enters the area in the morning. In some places this is 1-2 hours after sunrise. Same goes for valley bottoms in the mountains. Works for areas around Divide, Woodland Park, Lake George, etc.

Thanks! I did some interneting and discovered Beaver Creek, Ramah, and Karval SWAreas. There are plenty of options it appears.

I just shoot em in the yard year round. No eating them until winter though.

My yard is the size of a postage stamp. Why is winter eating better?

After a hard frost there is less chance of the rabbit carrying tularemia. The frost also tends to kill off botfly larvae.

We complain if not hunting rabbits by Thanksgiving.

Scared the hell out of my wife about 3 weeks ago. Saw one in front of the truck while I was leaving for work, so I Glock'd him. Apparently there needs to be a gunfire warning at 6:45am. [gohome]

Does that mean you count to five before you fire again?

I usually wait until after a snow. This year I may make an exception though. It's cold enough out there now I figure if we had a little higher humididity we'd have a good frost. I remember finding live botfly larvae under a rabbit pelt in high school. You want to make sure those things are dead.

Yes, the botfly larvae are nasty. You can squeeze them out from under the hide like a pimple. The meat under the bot is often infected. Just plain nasty! I haven?t found one in a rabbit, but I have seen a few on squirrels. I used to start hunting squirrels in September when I lived in the Midwest, so there was no frost to kill them off.
