I'm ashamed to say I've lived here 3 years and didn't know there was an Applebee's in town until maybe a week ago. Just never paid attention, I guess.

Anyway, I got an email today that Applebee's was offering a free meal to all vets. So, being the chivalrous guy that I am, I invited Mrs BG out to a late lunch/early dinner at Applebee's...my treat. :)

We got there and the place had a very patriotic theme going on with decorations and signs and such, all the staff were wearing special shirts honoring vets and Veterans Day and the joint was hopping with vets (many wearing memorabilia of their former units) and their families. I saw one or two old timers wearing hats from WWII and Korea, some Viet Nam era guys, and then the younger crowd from our more recent wars. Lots of women vets, too, including Mrs BG.

So we were treated like royalty...and not just the overused and cliche "thanks for your service" stuff. The staff members seemed to make a point of stopping at each table and asking about who served, when and where...stuff like that...and offering what seemed to be much more sincere, and personal, thanks.

Mrs BG had some sort of big ole burger and I had a nice steak with veggies and garlic mashed. Oh...and Budweiser had their "Buy a Vet a Bud" promo going on. So I had a free beer. Mrs BG bought a vet a Bud for the next vet who came in. The food was excellent, the beer was cold and the atmosphere was uplifting. We really enjoyed the meal and will make it a point to support the local Applebee's in the future. Our server was top notch even though she was very busy. The bill was $51 dollars but everything was discounted except some big-ass micro-brew Mrs BG had. So our amount was $7 and change. I paid the server the entire $51 amount anyway and she acted like I bought her a new car or something. Everybody made out like bandits.

I'm assuming they did this in Denver, too, but I've never heard of it before.

On the way home we drove by the Harley dealer...they had a big to-do going on as well...free steak dinner for vets and their families. Free hot dogs for anyone else.

Anyway, it was just a really good time and was a nice distraction from all the bad crap that goes on every day.

First off, thank you/Mrs. BG for your service. [Beer]

I could shrug this off as a merchandising gimmick but in the current times have to commend them for appreciating their vets.

Rock on. Bonefish did a free BangBang Shrimp appetizer for Veterans.

I am doing my best to patronize companies that I see do good things instead of getting embroiled in boycotts of those I see doing things I do not like.

I'm sure they're hoping to get a little marketing mileage out of it. But it didn't feel that way. It felt really authentic. And that's part of why it was so enjoyable.

The veterans parade in Prescott was 1.5hrs start to finish. Including opening ceremony, dedications etc.
It kind of slipped my mind this was Veterans Day weekend, until i noticed the town employees in our town putting flags along the main highway. Took me a minute to realize what they were doing it for, veterans in general down this area seem to be treated nice everyday.

Considering where BG lives. Applebees is a 12 step program for Ikea shoppers.

Now why you gotta trash up my feel-good thread with mention of IKEA? I'll have you know the nearest store is 375 miles from me. And that's too close. And not a one in ID.

I've never been.

I've never been.

To IKEA? To Idaho? To Applebee's?

All but Idaho.

Applebee's has been doing this for years. It's not my idea of gourmet food or a place I want to take a date but I applaud the company for what appears to be genuine appreciation for vets rather than just another marketing ploy.

C'mon, man. I didn't take a date...I took my wife.
