Flu season is here, and it (or a similar bug) really kicked my ass last week. A serious, beat-down, heel-stomp, ass-kicking. I can?t remember ever feeling so sick. Nothing didn?t hurt, I couldnt get out of bed (but couldn?t sleep), and I couldn?t eat or drink anything for 2 days (thank goodness I?m married to a retired paramedic who could start an IV and get some fluids into me). But the silver lining to being sick is that I learned a new side of my 3-1/2 year old Rottweiler, Calvin. Before I even realized how sick I was, Calvin was up on the bed, and he wouldn?t leave. I have to admit he?s always really been a mama?s dog, and usually stays pretty close to her. But he simply wouldn?t leave my side for over 48 hours, except twice a day (with serious coaxing) to eat and do his business outside. Then, right back up on the bed. He wasn?t snoozing, either. He was alert, grumbling a guttural growl if he heard anything outside, really seemed to be guarding me. And as soon as I was feeling better, he went back to his normal routine - he could just tell when I was in bad shape and when I wasn?t. To be on the receiving end of a dog?s loyalty is pretty damn touching, and it was nice to see Calvin growing into that sort of friend. Good boy, Calvin.

Sorry to hear that you were sick but very happy that you're feeling better and have such a great & skilled wife and such an amazing loyal companion.

Cool story. Our labs are the same way. My wife has some health issue with seizures. When she goes down they will lay by her side until she comes out and then helps her get to her feet. Dogs are amazing creatures.

Pretty cool how they "know". I had a cat years ago who was like that. She would be right next to me the whole time I felt like hammered crap. You got a darn good friend in Calvin. [Beer]

That's awesome! About Calvin, not about the flu...

Our Heeler is that way. The Corgis be like...dude...it's dinner time and you're still in bed. I'm hungry. I need a belly rub. I want some attention. Suck it up and take care of ME.

Glad you’re doing better. That behavior from Calvin warms my heart-give some extra belly rubs from me.

Good story, great dog, but during flu season man's best friend is a flu shot.

Glad you're feeling better.

Every Rottie I have ever had is that way. They know when you are sick or down, and they will not leave you. They are the perfect comfort animal.
