1st earthquake for me.
7.0, epicenter very near me.
Couldnt walk across living room without holding on to walls. Was working way to front door to get out before house came down.... can not believe we do not even have any drywall cracks.
Kitchen cabinet doors swinging open and shut, completely dark, dishes and such crashing to floor, very, very intense.

Glad your ok!
I have been through a couple, not a 7.0.
I guess Alaska is almost perfect ;)

Talked with one of our guys in AK. He was pretty shook up about it (ha!).

I was in a ~4.0 once in Cali and it was amazing how disorienting it was. I was in my apt and thought maybe I was having a vasovagal syncope episode or something. One moment I was fine and the next my world is spinning. I didn't even think of it being an earthquake at the time, until I later realized.

Can't imagine a 7.0

My son got to ride out in Chugiak this morning. He described very much the same thing

WOWZA !!!
Grew up in the SW corner of AZ., we had several shakers a year down there. But there was nothing of that magnitude.....

How was the second compared to the first? Did any Alaska shore lines end up getting any significant waves? I was thinking we had a member that moved to Alaska but couldn't remember who.

The 5.8 seemed like 1/3rd of what the 7.0 felt like. Don’t know about any waves, but the tsunami warning was cancelled pretty quick.
Lots of aftershocks.... nothing bad, but the “pucker factor” is strong.

Be careful of the tap water, could be contaminated now. I read on the Air Force website that Elmendorf AFB had shut off the water.

Now you can get those little oval stickers with a number in the middle. Yours will just be 7.0 and 5.8 instead of 13.1 or whatever.

Good thing I’m in water treatment :)
Most of us up here are on well water.

AND you should get the number overlaid with two or three opaque versions of the number so it looks like it's vibrating.

7.0 is a good one. I lived near Northridge when the 6.7 happend it was an eye opening experence and no power for days sucks too. Good luck to everyone in AK.

Glad you are ok. Checked in on a few guys I know up there, one in homer said he felt the shakes but nothing too bad, another in anchor point same thing, but waiting to hear on my friend in Palmer as he is the closest, hope he is good

Just heard from him and they are safe. Assessing the damage to house and hangar so hopefully it isn’t too bad

Glad you're OK. Shaken awake and rode through the San Fernando Quake of '71 at 6.5. Dumped the contents of my closet and was nearly impossible to get to the doorway. Was a helluva reminder that being in control is only an illusion.

Did a few in the 5 to 6 range in Misawa, Japan as well as many, many lesser ones. Always made me feel dizzy and nauseous for a bit. I can't imagine a 7.0 would be a lot of fun to ride out.

My son is PCSing to Joint Base Elmendorf in Jan. Something to look forward to.

Yea it’s crazy how fluid solid objects can become without being destroyed. One doesn’t believe until your see concrete rolling like water.

I was in a 3.8 in Steamboat Springs.. had been out and had a couple drinks, came home and went to bed and was in that in-between awake and dream state. Just remember the whole bed jumping up and down for a good 20-30 seconds and trying to figure out if what was happening was real or in my head.

The dreaded bed spins......hurlage usually follows soon after.

Not an illusion, a difference of 1.2 magnitude correlates to roughly 34 times as much energy released...

a numerical scale for expressing the magnitude of an earthquake on the basis of seismograph oscillations. The more destructive earthquakes typically have magnitudes between about 5.5 and 8.9; the scale is logarithmic and a difference of one represents an approximate thirtyfold difference in magnitude.

I'm glad you're okay!
I've been watching videos of quakes and photos of the aftermath. The mind boggles.

Glad there were no fatalities, with a 7.0 there will definately be property damage.

I remember a 6.2, but the only damage from that was from things falling off shelves.

I remember the Loma Prieta earthquake when I was in high school. It was a rolling 6.9. I was young and dumb enough to think it was kind of fun, water sloshing out of the pool like it was a bowl of soup carried by an epileptic waiter.

Didn't they change how the Richter scale works so earthquakes of the same number on the scale before and after the change are no longer the same? It's difficult enough to interpret as the numbers go up already, even more so with them changing the scale.

Gman
12-02-2018, 12:52
I know there is a damage scale beyond just Richter, as some motions are more damaging than others. The Modified Mercalli (MM) Intensity Scale, but it's subjective. I recall the Fujita scale being changed for tornadoes, so why not earthquakes? [Coffee]

Not sure exactly how I managed this, but slept through the 6.0 in Napa back in 2014, up on the 32nd floor of a (relatively) nearby hotel. Can remember having a really vivid dream of being up in a treehouse swaying in the wind, made more sense in the morning after I heard about the quake...

Kinda bummed actually, might have been only chance to be that close to a large one, would have preferred to be awake.

That 7.0 must have been wild...

Little update....
It’s sunday evening, and there have been about 1400 aftershocks so far.
Only 5 of them were 5.0 or higher, and those are the only ones you really notice.
If you were in a really quiet, calm home, might notice something a bit less.
It’s weird that a 5.0 is noticeable bump, and a 7.0 crumbles roads and brings buildings down with the sound of a freight train.
I drove around a bit today, lots of windows broken out, tons road damage anywhere the road is on the edge of a mountain or hill, not really much other than that.
The biggest thing seems to drop ceilings in commercial and government buildings. Anywhere there is a drop ceiling, the tiles are mostly gone, the lights are falling or have fallen out, and all the ductwork is dangling. Seems like a really shitty design in an area that could get earthquakes.
Local news is finally getting around to showing more than the pictures that went worldwide Friday. Houses and buildings were destroyed, but not that many compared to what seems like should have happened.
FYI The overhead drone picture of the road that crumbled that’s been all over the news is less than 2 miles from our place.
We will all know more as the work week gets underway tomorrow, and I’ll update again later on.
Thanks for all the well wishes.
