View Full Version : Granite finish concerns
Our new kitchen granite was installed today and I have some concerns. I'm not sure if they're unreasonable or not.
1. The profile (he called it bird's beak - it's a demi or lengthened bullnose) polish looks good, but it feels wavy when you run your hand lengthwise. Is this normal?
2. On the top surface of the island slab, near the edge profile, the polish looks dull. I think the finishers messed something up. Options?
Any input from the pro's would be welcome. I intend to take it up with the contractor, but also don't want to be an ass. I have had a few issues with these guys, so while I'm generally pleased for most of the work, the high dollar items - red oak floor (laid crooked) and granite - are giving me some real heartburn.
buffalobo, Tim K?
By all means bring it up. It should still be a professional job and wavy lines and crooked floors wouldn’t fly with me.
Don’t be an ass. In my opinion I like to be a dick. Cause dicks fuck assholes and pussies and no one fucks a dick.... so if you have to be something, be a DICK!
The wavy edge shouldn't be. That's the fabricator's fault. You could ask them to fix it, but keep in mind that if he wasn't skilled enough to do it correctly the first time, he may not be skilled enough to fix it.
The dull surface was likely in the slab before they got it. Unless something went wrong and forced them to top polish that area, they would try hard not to disturb the factory finish.

Can you put a straight edge against the waves surface and take a picture of it ? Then you would have actual proof of poor quality work to go after the supplier.

Thanks, that's what I thought.
Is there any way for them to fix it it in place, or would it have to come out?
The dull finish is only along the edge where they made the profile.
I'm sick over this, they're supposed to start installing the backsplash tile work today (different guys).
Aha. The dull finish on the edge is easy to fix, as is straightening the edge. A skilled guy can do it in-place easily. Breathe easy.
Thanks,
I spoke with the general and they had the granite guy call.
Owner of the granite shop said the same. He said the finisher probably rushed the job and his repair guy can make it right - in place.
Depending on how wavy (how much they have to take off) it could get pretty dusty. I'd plastic off everyting.

Yea, I'm going to make them cover everything and protect the floor as well since our 3rd and final finish floor coating is later next week. I'll probably make the general leave the room dividers here until they get back out (after Christmas) too.
Thanks for talking me off the edge all.
